RM2H8T5X1–01 December 2021, Bavaria, Hilpoltstein: A native pond mussel lies on the shore of Lake Roth. The native mussel species in the lake are being deprived of their habitat by the invasive triangular mussel. To contain the population, the water management office lowers the lake's water level to six meters over several weeks each year. Volunteers collect thousands of the native mussels to bring them deeper in the lake to the saving water. They would otherwise die in the winter temperatures. Left behind are the much smaller triangular mussels - and that's by design. Photo: Daniel Karmann/dpa

The pond is classified as a Natura 2000 zone (network of nature protection areas in the territory of the European Union) and in a ZPS (special Protection Area for wild birds). Many fish, crawfish, mussels died due to the low water level and lack of oxygen in the water. Toulouse. Capestang. Herault. France. August 25th 20
