RM2CDJJGC–. Insects . posterior halfsmooth, as in Hyphoraia alpina Quens. Wing-cases and thorax slightly wrinkled.Cremaster different from this latter species being shaped as shown on PI. Illat fig. 11, and bearing about forty stout capitate dull reddish bristles. Seitz^ refers to the larva as being dark grey with small black head andlong black or foxy red hair. The food plant is given as Vaccinium uliginosuniand other bog plants. In addition to the above specimens there is in the Ottawa collection a femalebearing the label Hudson bay. Dr. Bell, which we associate with this species. Genus Apantesis Wlk.

Dark brown, or blackish brown, covered with a light bloom or powdery substance which easily rubs off. The antennal cases are robust, and widely separated through the mid-thoracic region, which helps to produce the maximum width of the chrys- alis through this area. There are a number of minute vibrissae protruding from the anterior portions of the head, and four short stout cremasteric hooks at the caudal end. The pupa is illustrated on Plate 43.. The greasy cutworm {Agrotis ypsilon Rott.) feeds upon the strawberry. The army worm (Lucania unipunda Haw.) feeds upon a variety of plants, and several of its near relatives occur. The larvae of the salt-marsh caterpillar {Estigmene acraea) (Figs. 290, 291), the yellow bear (Diacrisia virginica Fab.) L. Walton of Glendale, Calif., feeding on Purshia, Artemisia, and a low- yellow flowering unidentified plant. Numerous examples were collected at an elevation of 9,100 feet on the summit of the Inyo Mts., on May 10, 1930.
