The Red-rumped Parrot 'Psephotus haematonotus' is also known as the 'Red-backed Parrot', 'Red-winged Parrot', or Blood-winged Grass Parrot. It is a common bird of south-eastern Australia. Red-rumped Parrots are slender, elegant, and medium-sized parrots approximately 27cm in length. The male's plumage is a bright green with yellow underparts and aqua flanks on the wings. Its bright 'red rump' is actually on the lower back and they often have deep-blue streaks on the wingtips. The female's plumage is generally less vibrant, with pale olivey underparts, somewhat duller green wings and back with blue-black wingtips. She is devoid of the red back, with the characteristic 'red rump' only being found in the adult male. Red-rumped Parrots can be found in pairs, small families, or as flocks in open country or light bushland, as generally avoid more heavily timbered areas. Like most grass-parrots they feed mainly on small seeds
