Racoon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon Procyon)

Description

The Raccoon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon procyon), a species that has recently been introduced to the aquarium hobby in 2016, is relatively uncommon. Despite its rarity, this tetra stands out for its striking elegance and is known for being easy to care for, making it an attractive choice for aquarium enthusiasts. Displaying a peaceful temperament, Raccoon Tetras coexist harmoniously with other mild-mannered fish species.

  1. Temperature: The Raccoon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon procyon) thrives in aquariums with a temperature range between 73°F and 82°F (22°C to 28°C). Maintaining a stable temperature within this range is crucial for their well-being.

  2. Minimum Size Tank: Provide a tank with a minimum size of 20 gallons (75 liters) to accommodate a group of at least six Raccoon Tetras. A larger tank allows them to display their natural shoaling behavior and minimizes territorial disputes.

Feeding Habits: Raccoon Tetras are omnivores and readily accept high-quality flake food, pellets, and live or frozen treats such as brine shrimp and daphnia. A varied diet ensures optimal health and coloration.

Habitat Preference: Create a suitable habitat with ample driftwood, dense plantings (both floating and rooted), and darker substrates. Mimic their natural environment by incorporating peat filtration to achieve a slight brown tint in the water.

Water pH Level: Maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH level ranging from 6.0 to 7.0 to replicate the conditions of their native habitat.

Behavior: Known for their peaceful temperament, Raccoon Tetras thrive in community tanks. To observe their natural behavior, keep them in groups of six or more, providing a sense of security.

Raccoon Tetras naturally shoal in the wild, so keeping them in groups is essential for their well-being and to encourage natural behaviors.

Color and Other Details: The Raccoon Tetra boasts a light rosy gold body adorned with elongated fins in a vibrant yellow hue. A distinctive dark blotch at the base of the caudal fin, accompanied by two red humeral spots on each side, contributes to their visually appealing characteristics. To enhance their vibrant colors, consider moderate lighting conditions in the aquarium.

Remember to regularly monitor water parameters and provide a well-balanced diet to ensure the health and vibrancy of your Raccoon Tetras.
