The diverse and compelling Thai capital of Bangkok is often referred to as ‘an attack on the senses'. A street party come to life, if you may. The city is frequented by the Indian crowd for several reasons—a ‘hop, skip and jump' flight time, visa on arrival, and a smorgasbord of experiences on offer depending on the kind of getaway you're seeking.

It's the kind of city you either hate or absolutely love; there is no in between. A scene from The Hangover Part II sums it up for those who belong to the latter category… when Tattoo Joe says to Phil, “Bangkok has him now, and she'll never let him go.” Vogue puts together a guide that will ensure there's never a dull moment as you hit the city's streets.

Plush doesn't do justice to the all-suites hotel (also one of the tallest in the city). Enjoy an inimitable time with a meal on their floating restaurant Apsara that cruises on the Chao Phraya River. THINGS TO DO IN BANGKOK

Temple trail [#image: /photos/5ce43c1fcc50be1a7a140ada]||| ||| Shutterstock

With over 400 temples or wats scattered across the city, it's only fair to add a few to your "things to do in Bangkok" list. The Wat Phra Kaeo inside the Grand Palace (a royal complex on an artificial island by the Chao Praya River that dates back to 1882) is home to the 26-inch tall Emerald Buddha, and is considered the holiest shrine in the city. Visit Wat Po for a glimpse of the 150ft-long reclining Buddha and the largest collection of Buddha images in the country, and Wat Traimit in Chinatown for the 10ft-tall solid gold Buddha. Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn is one of the most iconic landmarks in the country in Thailand as well.

Floating markets [#image: /photos/5ce43c1fb40d26a787d6dfc5]||| ||| Shutterstock

Even if you're not one for travel guide-recommended experiences, make an exception by visiting one of Bangkok's many floating markets, just because. A network of canals packed with samphans (narrow rowing boats) selling noodles, fruits, local handicrafts, and Thai snacks among others assorted wares, this is one of the top things to do in Bangkok. Taling Chan, Amphawa and Damnoen Saduak are the most popular ones.

Jam Factory [#image: /photos/5ce43c20a7e6a46e728ee328]||| ||| Facebook.com

Skip the usual suspects in favour of a leisurely time at this warehouse-turned-cultural-compound that is a cafe, homeware store, indie art gallery, restaurant, and bookshop rolled into one. This offbeat space has a packed event calendar (including a lively farmers market every last weekend of the month), so do some research ahead of your visit. Add to that a grassy courtyard with massive Bodhi trees and a deck leading to the river's edge, and we bet you won't want to leave. Jam Factory, 41/1-5 The Jam Factory, Charoennakorn Rd, Khlong San; Tel: +6628610953

Put on your chef's hat and learn a few tricks of the trade (or taste, shall we say?) at Issaya Cooking Studio by Ian Kittichai, arguably one of Thailand's most popular chefs. Classes include some of their most famous recipes, advanced cooking techniques as well as mixology and pastry sessions. Booking ahead of your trip is recommended. Jim Thompson Jim Thompson's story—an American expat who pretty much revitalised the dying Thai silk industry in the mid-20th century and then mysteriously disappeared in Malaysia in 1967—is an intriguing one. His eponymous lifestyle label that retails everything from upholstery and home decor to silk scarves, accessories, handbags, and clothing, is one of the most popular brands to come out of Thailand. Visit one of their many stores across the city or head to the brand's factory outlet in Soi Sukhumvit 93 for some serious steals. Jim Thompson's erstwhile traditional Thai teak house in Pathum Wan, that still holds his impressive art collection from Thailand, Cambodia, China, and Burma, is also open to public for daily tours. Jaspal [#image: /photos/5ce43c21f55c27c156a28c5f]||| ||| Fandesignstudio.com

Thailand's answer to the Zaras and H&M's of the world, this homegrown Thai brand is well-loved high street favourite. On-trend and forgiving on the pocket, what also tips the scales in Jaspal's favour is that at least not every second person you know we'll be sporting an outfit from the brand once you return home from your vacay. Market hopping [#image: /photos/5ce43c21f55c27e5fea28c60]||| ||| Shutterstock How can a trip to Bangkok be complete without a jaunt (or many) to one (or many) of its infamous markets aka bargain hunter paradise? Chatuchak Market, Patpong Night Market, and Platinum Mall are some you can add to your list. A word to the wise: brace yourself to brave the crowds. And brush up those bargaining skills—when they go high, most definitely go low.

Maggie Choo's Novotel Bangkok Fenix's underground bar, in a space that was once an East India Company Bank underground vault, takes you back to 1930s prohibition-era Shanghai. Getting around Bangkok [#image: /photos/5ce43c243bf9b4c1c2b1dc86]||| ||| Shutterstock

Bangkok's traffic is patience-testing, even for those who are no strangers to bumper-to-bumper roads. The BTS (the above-ground Skytrain) and MRT (underground metro) run from 6am to midnight and are fairly convenient. The novelty of a tuk-tuk may entice some, but be prepared to pay a pretty penny for a ride. There's no going wrong with local cabs or Uber, but map the route along with the driver to account for any ‘lost in translation' directions.
