Dozens of people were injured when a crowd tried to force its way into a Nairobi stadium before William Ruto was sworn in as Kenya’s fifth president today.

Shortly after 6am, with the Kasarani Sports Centre already packed, police said they were unable to control the throng that broke through the stadium’s fences. Videos showed hordes of people streaming into the stadium screaming.

Police later said they had closed the gates and regained control. The Red Cross were said to have been taking injured people away. “We had to treat some with minor injuries. Most of them were rushed to the main hospital in Nairobi,” Peter Muiruri, a medic who estimated that 60 people had been injured, told the Associated Press.
