What did you love most about the beloved CW series Gossip Girl? Was it the prep school vibes, the excellent costumes, or the gorgeous young actors? Or was it the dramatic, rollercoaster love story of Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf?

Though there was a lot happening on the Upper East Side, Chuck and Blair’s romance was basically the center of the show — especially in its last few seasons — but did you know it wasn’t always meant to be?

Gossip Girl co-creator/writer Josh Schwartz spilled the beans about the origin of GG’s ultimate pairing. “None of that was expected,” he told Vulture. “Chuck came into the show as the villain. But it’s one of those great, fun things about making a television series — it’s an evolving, living, breathing thing, and things can easily change on a whim.”

Once the production team saw the chemistry between Leighton Meester (Blair) and Ed Westwick (Chuck), they wrote the romance in. It made total sense, considering both characters were major schemers and had a compelling dark side that made them a natural pairing. (Sorry, Nate.) They decided that Chuck and Blair would be together forever, but in true teen soap opera fashion, they had to jump through more than a few hoops … like an ill-fated romance between Blair and Dan and Chuck’s struggle with the loss of his father, the dastardly Bart Bass. Said Josh, “That love story between those two characters was always one of the overarching stories of the whole show, and we knew that. As far as we pushed them, we always had to be able to find a way to bring them back together.”

Even Gossip Girl creator Cecily von Ziegesar was a fan of Chair, Josh said. He that Chuck and Blair would be very happy together forever, and that their son Henry would probably not be quite the bad boy his dad was. Can we get a Gossip Girl 2 featuring Henry and his friends, Josh? Pretty please?
