Buffy star David Boreanaz gives ‘final word’ on long-running Angel/Spike debate
Actor has waded in with his official verdict on the matter
David Boreanaz has given the "final word" in an ongoing Buffy the Vampire Slayer debate.
The actor was first introduced in the hit show’s first season as Angel, the vampire love interest of Sarah Michelle Gellar's lead character.
Angel eventually left the show to join his own spin-off series, which paved the way for Buffy to become romantically linked with Spike (James Marsters).
The debate surrounding which character was more suited to Buffy has continued long after Joss Whedon's show came to an end in 2003.
Last month, US politician Stacey Abrams brought the conversation back into focus, tweeting: "To be fair, Angel was the right boyfriend for Buffy coming into her power. Spike was the right man to be with as she became the power."
Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow in the series, approved this statement, writing: "I'll vote yes to that!" Even Whedon said he agreed.
However, Boreanaz disagrees and, in a new interview, has stated that Angel was and always will be the man for Buffy.
He told The Wrap: “All I’ll say is this, man: True love is first love and first love is true love. Drop the mic. End of story," the actor told The Wrap.
“I don’t think we need to continue. I mean, it’s pretty simple, right? Let’s think about that for really a second."
Boreanaz added: "You’re coming from the character’s mouth here. I think I’ll be the final word on it.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and spin-off Angel are available to watch on All4.
