Tilda Swinton is strongly tipped to replace Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who.

The actress, who has previously starred in Doctor Strange, A Bigger Splash and We Need To Talk About Kevin, is the bookies favourite for the coveted role. According to Ladbrokes, she is 4/1 to land the part and become the first woman to ever play the Timelord.

Kris Marshall is the second favourite at 5/1, followed by Olivia Coleman then Maxine Peake. Ben Whishaw and Richard Ayoade have also been mooted as possible contenders.

Swinton has played with gender several times in film, often taking roles not necessarily written for women. In the 1992 adaptation of Virginia Woolf's Orlando, she played a man who transforms into a woman. In Doctor Strange, she stars as the Ancient One, a role previously played by a man, then in I'm Not There, she was one of several actors to be cast as Bob Dylan.

Capaldi announced he would stand down as Doctor Who last month, stating that season 10 would be his last in the role.
