This is, just like the previous photograph, taken by me while on vacation on Öland in 2006. It shows a cow of the old traditional Swedish breed called Fjällko, which literally translates into Mountain Cow. They originally inhabited the northern, mountainous parts of the country, and just like the breed Rödkulla, they were on the verge of becoming completely extinct, but was saved just in time.
They are remarkably effective grazers. If you put them in a barren forest, seemingly without anything to graze, they will still manage to grow and prosper on the food they find. If you would put an individual of a modern breed, such as Charolais or Holstein in the same forest, they would not be able to gain nutrition from the food they find, and they would starve.
The old traditional breeds are remarkable in many ways.
