Limnophila sp. 'Gigantea'

Limnophila sp. 'Gigantea' is home to South-East Asia, where it grows along the banks and edges of slow-flowing or stagnant waters. From L. aquatica, which reaches a comparable height, it can be discerned by the colour of its leaves. Those of Limnophila sp. 'Gigantea' have a light green shoot tip without any red tint. It is still unclear whether this plant is in cultivation in Europe at all, in the USA it is well-established in the hobby.

It is not quite as undemanding as L. sessiliflora, but, all in all, not difficult in cultivation given that some basic conditions are met. It needs sufficient light (0.5 watts per litre) and CO2 ferilisation. Under insufficient light, the lower parts of the stems start dissolving. The water should be clear and clean so no particles accumulate between the finely structured leaves that promote algal growth. Macronutrients (nitrate, phosphate and potassium) should be added on a regular basis. High phosphate levels of around 2 mg/l cause the internodes to shorten. The plant needs an ample iron supply to prevent its colours from paling.

When kept under favourable conditions, it is a fast grower, like all representatives of the genus Limnophila. It needs a lot of room then, sending out many runner-like lateral shoots into neighbouring plant groups. When trimming, cut off the top shoot. If you want to propagate the plant, re-plant this cutting in the substrate. You can also use lateral shoots to do so.

This finely structured stem plant enriches the background of medium-sized to large aquaria. It is especially suitable for Dutch-style tank layouts, as it contrasts beautifully against other plants, regarding its leaf structure as well as its colour.
