Description

The fire eel has a snake like body and pointed snout, with beautiful red markings throughout the body. They should be kept in a minimum tank of 75g, considering they can reach about 3ft size. They are territorial and are known to fight with other bottom feeders if not provided with enough space. This species are generally shy creatures and prefer to burrow in the sand, or hide in driftwood, and/or between plants. Make sure to have plenty of hiding spaces. They are also nocturnal, they will eat and swim around during the night, if you consider keeping the room and tank dimly lit, the eel might come out more often during the day. Any tank mates should be larger than your fire eel’s mouth, or he might gobble them up. Also keep in mind these guys do NOT like typical fish food, they should be provided with a well rounded diet of shrimp, fish, insects, and earthworms!
