'I can still look good in the gear!' Craig McLachlan displays his VERY muscular arms as he once again performs as Frank N Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show

He first took to the stage as Frank N Furter, the outer-galactic transvestite in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, 20 years ago, and Craig McLachlan still looks incredible in his costume.

The 49-year-old showed off his incredibly muscular arms as he took to the stage on Wednesday night for the premiere night of the show in Sydney.

Wearing the signature black corset, black briefs, garters, fishnet stockings and pearl necklace, The Doctor Blake Mysteries actor looked just like Tim Curry's version of the character in the 1975 film.

His toned legs were also on full display as he strutted the stage in his black heels.

The actor's eye makeup was intense and featured blue and grey eye shadow, lots of eye liner and red lipstick to top off the look.

The Gold Logie winner told AAP why he decided to take on the role again for the 40th anniversary: '(I'm doing it again) just to see if I can still look good in the gear.'

Once seen as the ultimate cult musical for misfits and outsiders, The Rocky Horror Show is now a multi-generational touchstone with hits like Time Warp and Sweet Transvestite.

'I fell in love with it as a young guitar student, I had no idea what it all meant but I just loved the music,' he explained.

'It's all killer, no filler.'

Craig took to Twitter on Tuesday ahead of the opening night and said: 'Ready for a wild n' wacky week!!!! #rockyhorrorau.'

The glitzy production toured Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth and Adelaide last year to strong reviews with McLachlan winning the Best Male Actor Helpmann Award for his efforts.

Craig is joined on stage by TV veteran Bert Newton as the narrator and a cast that includes Riff Raff and Magenta from the London anniversary production.

The Rocky Horror Show will run for seven weeks at Sydney's Lyric Theatre.
