CSI star Gary Dourdan charged with possessing 'hillbilly heroin'

Former CSI actor Gary Dourdan has been charged with possessing a drug known as 'hillbilly heroin.'

He faces up to a year in jail after Los Angeles City Attorney's Office charged him with carrying oxycontin when he allegedly smashed into several parked cars in Hollywood last month.

Dourdan was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police officers had initially believed Dourdan was in possession of ecstasy during the June 13 incident, but detectives later identified it as the powerful prescription painkiller.

It derives its street name due to its similar affects to heroin.

The 44-year-old star, whose character was killed off of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in 2008, was arrested after allegedly ploughing his car into several parked vehicles.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, responding officers found several pills in Dourdan's possession.

He was taken into custody and booked at the Pacific Division Police Station in the Venice neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

He posted $10,000 bail and was released about eight hours after his arrest.

However he will not be criminally punished for the damage to the cars, as that is a matter for insurance companies.
