Review: Tivoli Gardens

Tell us about this place.
This famous amusement park combines manicured gardens and roller coasters in central Copenhagen, and has been attracting visitors since the 19th century, making it the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world. Visit at night when thousands of twinkling lights make it feel pulled from a fairytale. And not surprisingly it inspired the likes of Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney, who both visited. Be sure to grab lunch or dinner at the restaurant Gemyse, where plant-forward dishes are served inside a greenhouse and a large, lofty dining room.
What rides should we be sure to check out?
Tivoli’s most infamous ride is the century-old wooden rollercoaster, which still has a brakeman on board each train. On the more modern end of the spectrum, The Demon provides a new virtual reality experience rollercoaster. The Orangery, one of nearly a dozen gardens, provides an exotic and tranquil refuge to recovery from the adrenaline.
How easy is it to navigate (and find our preferred rides)?
While it’s easy enough to walk around Tivoli’s flat, paved pathways, the biggest challenge is the overstimulation (rollercoasters, crowds, flashing lights). Thankfully there are plenty of places to sit for a break. You’ll be glad you balanced your schedule between rollercoasters and the gardens.
Who is this best for?
Visitors of all ages love this classic park, but it is particularly appealing to families.
