He made his feature film acting debut in Wes Craven's 1984 horror classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and went on to have supporting roles in "Platoon" (1986) and "Cry Baby" (1990). Depp's acting breakthrough came courtesy of the Fox police procedural series "21 Jump Street," which turned Depp into a teen idol during his four-season run as a main cast member from 1987 to 1989. He became synonymous for playing more offbeat and idiosyncratic characters when his film career took off in the 1990s with the likes of "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" (1993), "Donnie Brasco" (1997) and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1998).
