The Pseudomugil signifer, also known as the Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish or simply Pacific blue-eye, is a captivating species that brings colour and activity to any freshwater aquarium. This small fish is endemic to eastern Australia, inhabiting freshwater streams, estuaries, and coastal drainages. They are also found in clear, cool, fast-flowing streams and brackish mangrove estuaries.
The Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish stands out with its stunning iridescent colours and pearly spots along the body. The eye's iris is a striking blue, giving the fish its common name. The operculum and belly region are silvery, often adorned with pearly spots.
Regarding aquarium setup, these fish thrive in water parameters that mimic their natural habitat. They can adapt to various types of water hardness, from soft to moderately hard water. A well-decorated aquarium with plenty of hiding spots using plants, rocks, and driftwood will help replicate their natural environment. The option of blackwater is available, with some populations being found in slower swamp or bog habitats.
Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish are omnivorous. They enjoy a varied diet of live foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and insect larvae but will also accept high-quality flake and frozen foods. Supplementing their diet with vegetable matter can also be beneficial.
When it comes to breeding, Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish are egg scatterers. They will often spawn among fine-leafed plants, laying their eggs individually. The female attaches the eggs to plants or decorations within the tank, where they will develop over time. It is essential to ensure that the tank environment is suitable for breeding, with adequate lighting, water temperature, and water quality.
After spawning, removing the parents from the tank is advisable to prevent them from eating the eggs. The eggs typically hatch after a week to 10 days, depending on the temperature. Once the eggs hatch, the fry must be fed small amounts of food several times daily. Baby brine shrimp, microworms, or finely ground fish flakes are good options.
It is essential to monitor the water quality and temperature in the tank during the breeding process. Pacific Blue Eye Rainbowfish are sensitive to changes; sudden temperature or water chemistry shifts can harm the fry. A heater and thermometer can help maintain a stable temperature, while regular water changes and testing can help ensure that the water quality stays optimal.
Dead on Arrival (DOA) Policy: In the unfortunate event that your fish arrives dead, please follow these steps: Within 12 hours of the delivery, take clear, unopened bag pictures showing the deceased fish. Send these photographs and your order number to our customer service email at getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or to our Facebook page, and we will then offer a refund or store credit for the cost of the fish.
Two-Week Guarantee Policy: We stand behind the health and quality of our fish, which is why we offer a two-week guarantee starting from the day of delivery. If your fish dies within this time frame, follow the following procedure: Take clear photos of the deceased fish. Using a reliable test kit, document water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite levels) via a dated image. Please email us the photographs, water parameters, and order number to getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or our Facebook page. After reviewing your claim, if approved, we will issue a store credit for the cost of the fish. Our two-week guarantee does not cover fish deaths due to unsuitable water conditions, incompatible tank mates or "disasters", i.e. a heater overheating. To prevent such situations, we recommend thoroughly researching each fish species' needs before introducing them to your aquarium.
