Black Faunus Snail/Black Devil Snail
Genus: Faunus
Species: F. ater

See below for care details.

Maximum Size: 3.5”
Aggression: Non-aggressive
Temperature: 72-77 F
pH: 7.5-8.5
Hardness: 15-25 dH
Brackish Tolerance: 1.000-1.025 reportedly
Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons
Feeding: Will subsist mainly on algae growing in the tank. Can also consume algae wafers, sunken vegetables, and calcerous material like cuttlebone
Notes: The Black Faunus Snail possesses a very rare trait for an aquatic invertebrate: it can reportedly be kept in salinity levels from Freshwater to Fully Marine (acclimated over a period of several weeks). In the wild, it comes from low salinity Estuaries around 1.002-1.008 but does sometimes make its way into salt water drainage areas.

In the home aquarium, Black Faunus Snails are unassuming tank residents, searching for uneaten food and decaying plant matter though they do eat algae as well (green algae most likely preferred). Like the visually-similar Malaysian Trumpet Snails, Black Faunus Snails have very thick shells and are protected from all but the most belligerent tankmates like Puffers. As such, they make decent tankmates for a wide variety of fish.

Like Nerite Snails, these snails lay eggs which are theorized to hatch into a marine larval phase. They are very unlikely to successfully reproduce in the home aquarium.
