Schistocerca gregaria, The Desert Locust (+Dissection)

Locusts. They have been known as a devastating pest since biblical times and are still around today. Those tiny insects can eat their own weight in plants each day. Now, that doesn’t sound like a lot as they’re really light. But how many locusts can be in one swarm?

Thousand? Ten thousand? A million?

A locust swarm of Schistocerca gregaria, the desert locust, can be several hundred square kilometers big. And each square kilometer can contain … up to 80 million locusts.

That’s a lot!

Luckily, they don’t always swarm like that, it’s tied to their population density. The more crowded it gets, the higher is the need to travel. Having too many other locusts close to them, touching them, triggers a metabolic response which also changes the locust’s appearance.

Talk about overreacting to crowded spaces …
@suesa

And they can fly far! In 1954 one swarm was recorded to travel the whole distance from northwest Africa to Great Britain. But in most cases, they can be found in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Now, for educational reasons, I had to dissect two specimen of Schistocerca gregaria.

A female:

I cut it open from the back, you can see how the wings are spread out to the sides. The white “strings” are the trachea, with which the locust breathes. The big white blob in the lower part of the animal is the ovary, you can even see some eggs in it.

I also dissected a male:

Notice that where the female’s ovaries were, there’s only some yellow-ish tissue. Usually, yellow tissue is fat but in this case, it’s the testes. (Fat is the yellow tissue everywhere else! In the female too.)

Hi @suesa, it's disturbing that these insects could travel over more than 5000km.. but I was wondering whether it was flight or hopping.

Flight! They're quite the gifted flyers.

extraordinary research,
you really are a great researcher, someone like you is needed

I am very impressed with research you do. it is the science of God has given no endless to be able to solve. please don't mind with an argument that I will add. and I wrote engine wear translite, please in understandable that is. I want to describe which that, the Lord has created everything in this world, definitely will not be kemudharatan for US. because God merciful. God's love always be with US. even beetle consuming the plant is also a Grace for US. did you know? Dung beetle is fertilizer best in the world for plants ?, the problem is, how to cultivate beetle, so that we can take advantage of feces. then that's why created man on Earth this, in order to solve all the problems that God has given, so that we want to think, even the grasshopper which has been a problem, it must solve to be the benefits for US human. how great the Grace of God give. people will be happy are people who want to examine and think of the solution. thank you @suesa ,, I like you. by @boyasyie

You warned but I read this while eating.

Ewwww.

I did everything I could, rest is on you :D

I should start believing what women say :)

All feminists will jump on your back!

Ooh, I do enjoy people jumping, it's a good exercise :)

@apsu, I have only just eaten and now you made me laugh so hard my stomach hurts! It's not good to laugh that hard on a full tummy!

Oh no, I'm very sorry.

I am a very modest person, but should I add a warning "This might make you laugh" in front of every comment to avoid such dangers?

Sorry for your stomach, hope it'll be better.

No worries! I'm recovered enough that I can check your blog out without any ill effects. Thanks...

Awsome, this is one of those subjects you never think will be interesting until you read it which is the beauty of Steemit. I found myself zooming right into the dissected images 😷🤢

Now imagine being just millimeters away from it with your nose cause you need to sketch it and just can't see all the details....ahh... the smell of 5 hours old, dead locust is still in my nose.

I empathyse with the locust, I also have the same reaction to crowds XD
Seriously though, this is crazy! I had images in my mind of swarms of locusts moving across the land litterally stripping it bare! Wow, fascinating stuff!

About ten years ago a swarm 3.7 miles long crippled agriculture industry in parts of Australia, the more understanding we have of all species of these beasts the better we will be at maintaining stable populations and minimizing the negative effects they have on food production worldwide.

Thanks @suesa ill be following!

My stepfather says they're great fried with honey

Sounds reasonable as they've eaten everything else when they swarm! ;-)

@suesa very interesting
you've worked very good research.
but I am still curious,
to my knowledge, both male and female locusts, have the same yellowishness, and that is the dirt that both locusts (not eggs).
I've been researching about it, but I have not split.
thank you and useful knowledge @suesa

They both have fat, yes, but the female has ovaries and the male testes. The testes can be better seen under a binocular microscope, the photo doesn't show the difference between fat and testes very well.
