Offering Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis).

Going by a few names such as rock shrimp bamboo shrimp, filter shrimp, wood shrimp and fan shrimp, and growing to a length of approximately 4 inches, this shrimp is a relatively new and intriguing addition to the aquarium hobby.

They feed by mechanism of using their fan like appendages to filter the water, picking a perch with good water flow where they will extend these fans out rhythmically cleaning them one by one. They are entirely peaceful, and therefore well suited for community aquaria by the same token, they are also rather vulnerable and should not be housed with aggressive fish such as cichlids. These shrimp will periodically moult, which is when they are at their most vulnerable; it is therefore important to offer some form of cover while this happens, to allow their new shell to harden.

In terms of water quality, they require an established aquarium (cycled) with clean water. Shrimp as a species, do not cope well with ammonia quite often a small amount will easily kill them. This species can be acclimated to hard or soft water, a ph of between 6 - 7 being ideal.

They require brackish water to breed, therefore in freshwater aquaria they will not reproduce and overrun tanks with shrimplets. Specialised bamboo shrimp food can be purchased, alternatively shrimp or flake food can be crushed up and dropped into the water flow for them to catch.
