Our Guide To Keeping Licorice Gourami Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Parosphromenus deissneri
    • Common name: Licorice Gourami
    • Family: Osphronemidae
    • Origin: Southeast Asia
    • Adult length: 2.5 to 3.5 cm
    • Lifespan: 3 to 5 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Licorice Gouramis thrive in densely planted aquariums with subdued lighting and floating plants to mimic their natural habitat.
    • Provide hiding spots using driftwood, caves, or plants as they appreciate areas with cover.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0.
    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a gentle filter to ensure water movement without causing strong currents.
  5. Diet:

    • Licorice Gouramis are micropredators, feeding on small insects and microorganisms. Offer them live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro worms.
    • Supplement their diet with high-quality micro-pellets or flakes.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Licorice Gouramis are peaceful but may be territorial during breeding. Keep them with small, non-aggressive tank mates such as small rasboras, dwarf shrimp, or other peaceful gourami species.
    • Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping fish that may stress them.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Licorice Gouramis are generally peaceful and enjoy a calm environment. They may display more vibrant colors when kept in a well-planted tank with suitable tank mates.
    • Provide ample hiding spaces to reduce stress and promote natural behaviors.
