Our Guide To Keeping Hong Kong Pleco

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Beaufortia kweichowensis
    • Common name: Hong Kong Pleco
    • Family: Balitoridae
    • Origin: Hong Kong, China
    • Adult length: Varies, typically 10 to 15 cm
    • Lifespan: 5 to 8 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Hong Kong Plecos require a tank with plenty of hiding spots and smooth surfaces. Provide rocks, driftwood, and caves to create hiding places.
    • Ensure the tank has a strong filtration system and regular water changes to maintain water quality.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Keep the water temperature between 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F).
    • Maintain a pH level between 6.5 to 7.5.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

  5. Diet:

    • Feed a varied diet consisting of sinking pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini and cucumber.
    • Occasionally offer protein-rich foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp as a treat.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Hong Kong Plecos are generally peaceful but may be territorial. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or large fish species.
    • Compatible tank mates include peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, and smaller cichlids.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Hong Kong Plecos are nocturnal and will be more active during the night.
    • Provide hiding spots and ensure the tank has subdued lighting to make them feel secure.
