Product description & details
The Nego Dagua tetra, which originates from the north-east of Brazil, was scientifically described as early as 2001, but is one of the novelties in aquaristics. It is only about 3.5 cm long and the male in particular is characterized by its black body and fin colouring, which contrasts beautifully with the white fin edges. Depending on the incidence of light, the scales also shine in an olive green or salmon pink hue.
Care in the aquarium
In terms of care, Hyphessobrycon negodagua is not too demanding if a few things are taken into account. It needs an aquarium with an edge length of at least 60 cm and enough free swimming space. As a somewhat shy schooling fish, the Nego Dagua Tetra only feels comfortable in the company of its conspecifics and should therefore be kept in a group of at least 8-10 animals. When socializing with other fish, you should choose small, peaceful and calm fish that do not intimidate the Nego Dagua Tetra. Ideally, the water should be rather soft (< 15 °dGH) and the pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0. Dense border planting and floating plants give the tetra a sense of security and an opportunity to retreat.
Feeding
Small flake or granulated food as well as small live and frozen food are readily accepted by the Nego Dagua Tetra.
Sexual characteristics and breeding
In contrast to the females, the male Hyphessobrycon negodagua has a much more intense black body coloration and a little more extended, tapering dorsal and anal fins. If the black coloring is largely absent in the females or is only very faint, they do have a clearly visible black spot on the base of the caudal fin. The little tetra is a free spawner, so it lays its eggs freely in the aquarium and does not take care of the brood.
