Breeding a special Yellow Hypancistrus sp L333

First timer dad didn't disappoint me, never eat a single egg.
And for a long time, first time I was so excited about my Hypancistrus spawn again haha...

this is the female L333 it spawned with


The other yellow L333 from the same shipment, which I thought was a female, then male and lastly confirmed to be a female and a productive one too, 40 eggs in total ....

how sure are you that the other fish with it are the same species? There are several variants of L333's that could end up being different species. I am just concerned that these may be considered "hybrids"...

Well done on getting them to spawn johannes, but it looks to me like all three of these

Hypancistrus

are different L numbers:

L236

,

L333

and

L401

, if I am not mistaken.

The arguments as to what they really are can continue, but regardless, to my eyes they are different enough to be very cautious about allowing them to breed again.

Janne and HaakonH did suggest that the nice one is L236
but according to Pleco22, it is an aberration of L333.
This is indeed a very controversial topic but i try to breed with a female with the same body shape instead of pattern and of course and L-number closest to it, which is L333.
The nice male has a bulky body of L333 and not elongated at all.

Here is his pic before i release him into the quarantine tank.
You can see that his caudal is not forked nor crescent shaped. Furthermore, his body is as bulky as L333 with steep snout/head.

The bright yellow one reminds me of the Porto Do Moz L333 variant. The other two the traditional L333?

Johannes is absolutely right to look at body and finshape instead of pattern. Some individuals of L333 will have the pattern that L236 became known for. Some L66 will also have that pattern, and some L400 too.

The original L236 picture shows a fish that fits with the Belo Monte group (L66/400). It's flatter, and has a more forked caudal. Wild specimens tend to be more cream/yellow in colour when they first emerge, but usually this colour fades after some time in captivity. I wouldn't be surprised if the original L236 was more yellowish when it was caught than it appears to be in the famous Hartl picture.

The confusion in several threads on here has partially been due to the impression that L236 is/was broadlined L333. That is not the case. L236 is not the same "species" or form as L333. Johannes' fish are L333.

Thanks Mr Haakon,

I 100% agree with your deduction.
The male still somehow retained 90% of its nice pattern and coloration but due to them being kept in dark background tank. But if it is placed in a light coloured tub the colour will return fully.

Anyway, the group's fry did maintain a uniform deep yellow coloration throughout the entire batch.
The first batch from February 2012 has grown up to 2+ inches in length to date.

I have been keeping (and culled the deformed ones) every single fry that I have gotten from them and will try to generate F2 soon.

Great looking L333 and an interesting thread. It's nice to know that there are a couple of Hypans that can produce broad-banded specimens. A while ago I got a small group of L066's from a breeder. One of them has broad bands.
