Description

Bosc's fringe-toed lizard (Acanthodactylus boskianus ) is a species of lacertid lizard endemic to North Africa and Western Asia.

General Info

Lifespan

8-12 years

Diet

Bosc’s fringe-toed lizard is predominantly insectivorous, feeding largely on ants, beetles and spiders. Their diet also includes small arthropods, enhancing their intake of proteins and vitamins. They exhibit active foraging behavior, particularly during cooler hours.

Appearance

Bosc’s fringe-toed lizard is a medium-sized lizard, growing up to 30 cm long, distinguished by its slender, elongated body and spiky tail. Its rough scaly skin is predominately sandy brown, aiding camouflage in its arid habitat, with darker brown stripes along the dorsum. Notably, young bosc’s fringe-toed lizard's exhibit more vivid coloration, with bolder stripes that fade with age. Neither sexual dimorphism nor significant subspecies variation is observed in this species.

Behavior

Bosc’s fringe-toed lizard is an active desert dweller, notable for diurnal lifestyle and high speed movements. Solitary and territorial, bosc’s fringe-toed lizard visually display aggression and use burrows to mark territory. Foraging occurs during cool hours, feeding primarily on small arthropods. Remarkably, bosc’s fringe-toed lizard perform 'footdrumming' on substrate, possibly for predator deterrence or social communication, unique among lacertids.
