On May 24th, the Witte Museum launches the grand opening of the brand new four-story, indoor-outdoor H-E-B Body Adventure Powered by University Health System, a pioneering national model to ignite transformative health behavior change in a fun way. The Witte Museum has been part of the community, as the People’s Museum, for over 86 years and builds on this equity to address the urgent need of our community to find fun, exciting ways to get physically active, learn about our bodies and discover our rich traditions of healthy eating and nutrition. A Steering Committee of medical, public and allied health and education professionals convened three major Science Summits and the message from the community was clear: “Prescribing change is not as effective as inspiring change.” The goals of the H-E-B Body Adventure are to provide a safe haven for learning about how our bodies work, to interactively empower visitors to set achievable health goals and to offer visitors the skills to sustain health and wellness throughout their lifetime. To accomplish these revolutionary goals, the Witte Museum introduces peer modeling, physical activity, gaming technologies and a regionally relatable cultural focus into an immersive, indoor-outdoor museum environment. The three key themes of Health IQ, Empowerment, and Wellness shape the content of the components. In addition, the H-E-B Body Adventure specifically aligns with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills curriculum requirements for Health Education and Science in grades K-12 across several dimensions. At the heart of the experience is a system of networked components called the POWERpass. Visitors to the H-E-B Body Adventure sign-in and select one of twelve real Buddies to guide them virtually through activities. Activities such as the South Texas Trailblaze and the Pick Up Your Pace provide fun physical activity challenges, interactive computer games like Build A Balanced Meal prompt moments of discovery and a real plastinated human heart and gastrointestinal tract immerse visitors in anatomy. Wellness and Saturday, May 24th, 2014 relaxation components include Relax To Win and Relax Your Brain, while visitors 10:00 a.m. learn about healthy eating in a state-of-the-art demonstration kitchen and outdoor Official Ribbon culinary vegetable, herb and medicinal gardens. The Toddler Discovery Garden Cutting playscape offers a safe, comfortable space for young children and their Ceremony families to experience physical activity in an environment that also promotes positive social Exclusive Access norms of healthy eating. for Members! Visitors will see all aspects of making a magic lantern show in the 1800s, the equipment used and projections of the final presentations.

The B. Naylor Morton Research & Collections Center was named after an extraordinary man and collector, B. Naylor Morton, but what many may not know is that the funds were made available by his daughter, Susan Moulton, to honor the man who was an outstanding role model to his peers, family, and friends.

Fairytale Fiesta

Through August 24, 2014 | Betty Coates Textile Gallery Included with museum admission Visit a world of fantasy in Fairytale Fiesta with fiesta gowns inspired by fairytales, myths and magic. Julian Onderdonk in New York: The Lost Years, The Lost Paintings

Through September 9, 2014 Russell Hill Rogers Texas Art Gallery Included with museum admission Julian Onderdonk in New York: The Lost Years, The Lost Paintings is an exhibition based on a book of the same name by James Baker published by the Texas State Historical Association. Dr. Ron Tyler is the curator of the exhibition. Both the exhibition and the book reveal that while Julian Onderdonk has heretofore been considered a Texas artist, more than one third of his body of work was created in New York City and depicts scenes from the surrounding area. Many of the New York works were signed with pseudonyms, each well researched and documented. This exhibition and the book bring these years to light. Most of these paintings have never been displayed publicly.

A Witte Museum Trustee, Susan Moulton is also the founder of the Will Smith Foundation, a charity dedicated to researching, assessing, funding and monitoring exceptional children’s charities. The organization is dedicated to her late son, Will Naylor Smith. The Will Smith Foundation is heavily involved in the South Texas Heritage Initiative at the Witte through the Will Smith Classroom and Amphitheater at the South Texas Heritage Center, and plays a vital role locally and worldwide.

We hope you have gotten a chance to visitor the B. Naylor Morton Center, including the Dickson-Allen Orientation Center, with themed cases filled with Witte artifacts, and the adjoining San Antonio Express-News Reading Room, Peggy Walker Archives and on the second floor, the Texas Art Gallery. We welcome members to come or call ahead for some special attention!
