[ LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ] Today’s issue pays tribute to the centennial of Clayton’s 1913 incorporation as a city. Still the seat of county government today, our little jewel took on that role in 1876, when residents Ralph Clayton and Martin Hanley donated land for the purpose. That, it can be argued, launched Clayton as ‘the place to be,’ as politicians, judges and lawyers moved there to avoid commuting (we’re talking long horse-and-buggy rides). For a time, this county seat remained a sleepy enclave of homes and services (blacksmith, hotel, dry goods, tannery, saloons, and a one-teller bank) in the vicinity of the cupola-topped courthouse. That is, until 1912, when nearby University City revealed plans to annex it. That precipitated an 11th-hour meeting to foil the dastardly deed, and a hasty petition to incorporate. The city launched three months later, with just 315 personal taxpayers on record and a total population of 1,948 (compared to today’s 15,939). Sidewalks were scarce, and so were electric lights. St. Louis Country Club occupied Country Club Place and Polo Drive; Wydown Terrace, site of the World’s Fair Philippines exhibit, became a private girls school. Then Clayton experienced a boom in the 1920s and ’30s, when the population tripled and a grand park sprung up, thanks to Mayor Charles A. Shaw, a real estate developer who acquired the land and federal funds for it. His firm also built Claverach Park, Lake Forest and The Moorlands. A city hall sprung up in 1931 on Bemiston Avenue. I hate to leave you dangling in the 1930s, but even though you know how the story ends, you might want to read the rest in the city’s new birthday book: Clayton Missouri, An Urban Story (Reedy Press, $35). —Dorothy F. IN A RELATIVELY SHORT TIME, Sterling Bank has become an active partner in the St. Louis community. The bank opened a full-service facility in Clayton last year and will soon open a location in Chesterfield. “The people of Clayton have welcomed us warmly, and we’re looking forward to building solid relationships with our neighbors in Chesterfield, as well,” says Ken Poteet, chairman and CEO. Sterling Bank, established in 2004 in Poplar Bluff was profitable from its first quarter, Poteet notes. Within three years, the business reached $100 million in assets and expanded to Van Buren, Mo. “We’re now rated the most successful bank in a five-state region, one of the top five banks in the state, and one of the top 100 in the nation,” he says. “We rank high in every category, including earnings, credit quality and safety. And despite challenging economic times, our total assets in 2012 increased 21.5 percent over the previous year, to $430 million.” Poteet attributes Sterling’s success to high performance and outstanding service. “A strong commitment to excellence, part of our culture since day one, has always set us apart,” he says. “Our exceptional staff are the very best at what they do. They’re back by popular demand this year, starting April 18. The first three concerts will take place at the Clayton location; the fourth concert will take place at the Chesterfield branch. Events will then alternate between Chesterfield and Clayton on the third Thursday of every month. “It’s a great way for us to get to know our neighbors a little better and to deepen our relationship with the community,” McLane Poteet says. Guest performers include Brian Owens, Kim Massie and Erin Bode. “The artwork, events and concerts are things that everyone can enjoy,” Ken Poteet says. “They’re our gift to our neighbors. They show our commitment to building for the future. We want to make a positive, meaningful impact on this community, and we have the business model, culture and financial success to do it. at first like a frivolous activity with a simple objective—to see which team can knock down the most bowling pins—misses the point. Joining your company bowling team is an excellent opportunity for you to bond with your co-workers. It is important to get to know the people you work with, to build caring and trusting relationships, as many times one employee will need to ‘cover’ for another— times when established friendships and trust become invaluable. Participating in a bowling league is also a great way to develop or expand your social and professional network, as someday you might wish to apply for another job and need a personal reference. If you are physically able, make a concerted effort to play the game and be a team player. Don’t let a negative attitude be a strike against you (pun intended).

ABOUT THE CLUB Named for the Des Peres subdivision where its orginial members lived, the Four Winds Farm Book Club has a special tradition dating back more than 30 years. Each Christmas, members gather at Brenda Hamby’s house and bring children’s books wrapped in gift paper. The books go to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, where they are given to kids who come by after school. The group meets six times a year and enjoys staying in touch with those members who have since moved out of the neighborhood. “You can really get to know people through the reading and discussing of books,” Freda Cook says. A: I’m assuming your co-worker is merely a sourpuss in need of an attitude adjustment and not someone dealing with serious personal issues or a medical condition such as depression. On this premise, my first recommendation would be to try some subtle, positive-response conditioning. You might start by occasionally engaging her in light banter designed to elicit a positive response. For example, if the weather is exceptionally pleasant, you might say to her, ‘It’s really a beautiful day outside, isn’t it?’ You’re almost certain at least to get a response like, “Oh, it’s OK, I guess.” More important, try doing a favor for your co-worker once in awhile, like offering to get her a cup of coffee when you’re going to get one for yourself; showing a little thoughtful consideration many times can work wonders. Don’t be too obvious or go overboard by ‘killing her with kindness.’ Simply try, when appropriate, to speak to her in positive terms; give her a compliment once in a while, a word of encouragement, and when something truly wonderful happens— whether it’s something in the news or at the office—try mentioning it to her, adding a phrase like, “Isn’t that terrific?” Making an effort to be a positive influence around your co-worker should not only brighten her outlook, it should help you maintain yours! FEW LOCAL LANDMARKS pack the iconic punch of the old Busch’s Grove in

Ladue. The venerable restaurant and gathering place, with its gracious front porch and screened-in cabanas, stood at the corner of Clayton and Price roads for more than 100 years. It was the scene of many a family celebration, romantic rendezvous, prom date and high-powered business lunch until it closed its doors in 2008. Since then, it’s been reincarnated several times, first as an upscale eatery and jazz venue and then as a gourmet grocery store. But the teetering economy was slow to recover, and neither enterprise caught on. Sadly, the building has been vacant since 2010. That’s about to change. Construction recently began on a new incarnation for the prime hunk of real estate: The Shops at Clayprice Corner. It will be Ladue’s first enclosed mall, offering 14,000 square feet of luxury boutiques. “We did everything we could to keep the space a restaurant,” says Louis Cella, vice president of Southwestern Enterprises Inc., which owns the property. “It has an unbelievable hotel kitchen and truly spectacular appointments. We were reluctant to gut it, so we held out for as long as we could.” During that time, several local and national restaurants expressed interest in the building, but the plans fell through. “Our board finally decided the property

had been vacant long enough,” Cella says. “And, given our track record and the property’s outstanding location at one of the most heavily trafficked intersections in Ladue, we decided that retail was the perfect solution.” Southwestern Enterprises is no newcomer to the upscale retail scene. The company also developed and manages Clayprice Shopping Center and The Market Place in Ladue, among other high-end properties. “Our family has lived in Ladue since the early 1900s and done business there for more than 50 years,” Cella says. “We have a solid understanding of how the community works and what it needs.” Southwestern is completely rebuilding the exterior, reconfiguring the interior and redesigning the landscaping, Cella notes. Individual shops at the new mall will range anywhere from 500 to 5,000 square feet, depending upon tenant needs. “The space can hold as many as 10 shops or as few as four,” he says. “We’re hoping it will be completed by early summer.” Despite a still-recovering economy, Cella believes the landmark location hasn’t lost its magic. “All it needs is the right combination of tenants, management, and goods and services, and that’s what Southwestern Enterprises brings to the table,” he says. “Our shopping venues offer distinctive items not readily available elsewhere, and we’re known for our solid landlord-tenant relationships, based on mutual trust and sound corporate policies. And everybody knows that upscale shopping and Ladue are a match made in heaven because the city maintains such strict standards. Last month, Schnucks got a drubbing in local media until forensic folks put the quietus on a cyber crime that resulted in fraudulent use of customer info. Some lost money; they’ve been reimbursed. Now comes some friendliness for our hometown grocer via weekly trade pub Chain Store Age. (Not a subscriber? Me neither.) The leaner, meaner, Ballwin store was tapped as a Store of the Week for everything from its green construction and design to its neighborhood-market vibe that promotes shopper interaction and spotlights fresh and prepared foods. Without factoring in its 5,000-square-foot mezzanine, the store at Clarkson and Kehrs Mill roads is 40,000 square feet (half the size of the Des Peres flagship, also brand new, at 80,000 square feet. They don’t call ’em supermarkets for nothing). The mezzanine includes community meeting space as well as a dine-in area. As drivers descend into Chesterfield Valley, it pops into view on the right, hard for the eye to take in all at once. My camera can capture only a little of it at one time. Imagine an aircraft carrier on the prairie— that’s Taubman Prestige Outlets Chesterfield. Positioned across Interstate 64 from purportedly the longest strip center in the world (Chesterfield Commons on THF Boulevard), Taubman is set to open at 9 a.m. Aug. 2. It is gonna be big—in more ways than one. The parent company, based in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., is already establishing itself as part of our community by earmarking more than $50,000 in charitable contributions to the City of Chesterfield and three other worthy organizations this year. Chesterfield’s 25th anniversary celebration will receive one of the four major allocations; Taubman has already lent its support to Chesterfield Arts and sponsored the summer concert series. The shopping center recently supported A Tasteful Affair, the largest annual fundraiser for Food Outreach, and is backing CHESTERFIELD

Homers for Health, the pledge program that benefits SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. But whatever barks and wags its tail really makes Taubman hearts go pitter-patter: The company will support the Humane Society of Missouri’s Bark in the Park and Glow in the Park events on May 18 and Sept. 20. At the Bark, Taubman will sell personalized 8-by-8-inch tiles featuring dog photos to hang in the center’s Doggie Hall of Fame. Participating pooch owners also will receive a commemorative tile. Proceeds, of course, go to the Humane Society. This all makes sense for a dog-friendly, open-air, village-style enterprise. Try to save some energy after perambulating your portion of 310,000 square feet of retail space: The levee fitness trail is right out back. Athleta, a growing retailer of women’s active wear, is going into the upstairs Plaza Frontenac slot across from the cinemas where Graphic Traffic stood for about 20 years. A division of Gap, Athleta was a catalog-only retailer that started its bricks-and-mortar chain about three years ago; there are 30-some locations to date. A staffer says shoppers may find a skirt “you could go hiking in if you wanted to… and swimsuits that you can actually swim in!” She notes that her first day of training was a Zumba class. After a private opening May 13, the 3,200-square-foot store will open May 14. As healthy lifestyles are the focus, Athleta is mulling over community involvement ranging from sponsoring runs to holding yoga classes before the business day. It opened last Friday with minimal of fanfare—fanfare would have defeated the purpose of the Calming Corner, a place inside The Magic House to get away from all the noise and excitement this Kirkwood discovery emporium generates. St. Louis Children’s Museum often seems to be bursting at the seams from ebullience, and the Calming Corner is an ideal place for nursing mothers, children with special needs, and anyone else who could simply enjoy some time away from all that to decompress. The space was designed to meet the health and safety needs of children with developmental and physical challenges—especially those on the autism spectrum—who may need a respite. A soothing

sound machine enhances quiet activities to engage and entertain: sensory games and toys, a 6-foot bubble tube … and books, of course. The room also is equipped with a glider for nursing mothers, a child-sized rocker and beanbag chairs. The Calming Corner was made possible by the ‘It’s Our Region Fund’ of the Regional Business Council. The Magic House received the council’s Small Change-Big Impact grant for $6,500 to create this unique space within the museum, located on the lower level. The nonprofit “provides hands-on learning experiences for children and families that encourage experimentation, creativity and the development of problem-solving skills within a place of beauty, wonder, joy and magic.” Wow. Sounds like a heck of a place to relieve office stress. Ready to pillory a co-worker? Let’s all back away from the conference table and file into the company van: road trip! (Regular admission is $9.50; children younger than age 1 are free—after all, they don’t have jobs). Ever feel like the hole in a donut? It’s almost less than zero, unless the hole happens to be one of those yummy baked goods sold as ‘donut holes.’ In which case, you should consider yourself lucky not to have a gluten allergy. will be featured on Resale Royalty, a new reality series set at Women’s Closet Exchange in Sunset Hills. Bacino will appear in one or two episodes, choosing items for a T&S fashion shoot at the upscale resale shop. The series focuses on owner Sue McCarthy and her daughters, Diana Ford and Laura Maurice, as they run their secondhand fashion operation and go on ‘closet buys’ in the homes of socialites and fashion celebs nationwide, trying to find the best designer brands to bring back to their store. The show debuts May 12 on the Style Network.

Luis Actis, a teacher at Nipher Middle School in Kirkwood, is one of only 200 teachers nationwide to win a place on the 2013 LEARNZILLION DREAM TEAM. Clayton resident Jan Greenberg and co-author Sandra Jordan will receive a 2013 CHILDREN’S BOOK GUILD AWARD for nonfiction April 20 in Washington, D.C. They will be honored for their books about art and artists, including Ballet for Martha: Making Appalachian Spring and Action Jackson. “We love working on arts-oriented books for young readers, and it’s wonderful to receive validation,” says Greenberg. Illuminated by high-rises, the Clayton skyline has changed a lot in 100 years from the days when its old courthouse cupola was the tallest point in town. With anniversary events, civic projects and a new history book, Clayton: An Urban Story, the city celebrates a century of success in 2013.

The community is named for Ralph Clayton, a Virginian who settled in Missouri in the early 19th century and owned a farm, tannery and shoemaking business. In 1877, he donated 100 acres to form the seat of St. Louis County, with an additional 4 acres given by his neighbor, a blacksmith and fellow Virginia transplant named Martin Franklin Hanley. A brick courthouse was built, and the town grew up around it. According to Clayton: An Urban Story, the neighborhood had four doctors, three newspapers, two dentists, three groceries, three restaurants and one hotel by the early 1910s. Still considered quite rural, Clayton attracted St. Louisans who wanted a taste of the country. “People from the city were looking to this area as a respite,” says Sarah Umlauf, Clayton community resource coordinator. Residents advocated for the town to incorporate to allow tax collection to fund public works. Becoming a municipality also would prevent neighboring towns from annexing Clayton. “It was becoming such desirable land that other areas tried to grab pieces for themselves,” Umlauf explains. So in April 1913, Clayton filed for incorporation and officially became a city. In the 100 years since, it has grown into a hub of social and economic activity with nearly 16,000 residents. The past few decades have seen the city take strides to improve quality of life. Mayor Linda Goldstein cites the 2010 smoking ban, which prompted St. Louis County and City to pass similar measures, as one of Clayton’s most influential public health achievements. The

city’s efforts to become more environmentally sustainable are also notable; according to Goldstein, Clayton was the second community in Missouri (after Kansas City) to require government buildings to qualify for LEED certifications of silver or better. “Our new police station has the largest non-utility-owned solar panel in the state,” Goldstein says. “It serves as a model of good practices.” The Clayton Century Foundation picks up where the city leaves off. A private organization, it raised nearly $2 million for special projects focused on sustainability, parks, history and the arts to be implemented this year. These include an inclusive playground, a new trail and sensory and nature gardens in Shaw Park, concert and history speaker series, a new dog park, and publication of the history book. A community festival and a centennial gala are planned for the fall. “Communities are special places,” says former alderman Judy Goodman, co-chair of the Clayton Century Foundation. “This is an opportunity to stop and look around and say, ‘This is my community—why should I care?’” Restoring the Hanley House, which land donor Martin Hanley built in 1855, is among the projects the foundation is helping to fund. With one of Clayton’s few remaining 19th-century homes and slave quarters, the site allows residents to learn about the area’s past and reflect on how far it’s come. “When you delve into that local history, what you’re really doing is creating a stronger bond with your community,” says Jody Sowell, public historian at the Missouri History Museum. “The closer a connection you feel to your town and city, the more invested you are in its future.” Throughout the centennial, Goodman hopes Clayton residents will look back with pride and ahead with hope. “You’ve done something right if you’ve been around for 100 years,” she says. “It’s an occasion to celebrate what you’ve done and ask yourself, ‘What can we do better, and what’s gonna make us strong for the next 100 years?’”

THE INDIANA COUNTRYSIDE SERVED AS THE BACKDROP for Pete Beem and Kera Prusa’s Sept. 1 wedding. “Friends of ours have this beautiful property, 15 acres or so, out in the middle of nowhere,” explains Pete, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind. The sommelier met Kera in 2010 when both were working at a restaurant in Illinois. He proposed to her in September 2011 in Forest Park the day before his birthday. From food to music, friends and family contributed everything for the ceremony and reception. One friend planted wildflowers in the spring for the couple to use come fall. Another friend’s band, The Kick Down, provided music for the occasion. Pete’s sister officiated, having been ordained just for the ceremony. The pair spent their wedding night in a two-story tree house on the property before heading off to California wine country for their honeymoon. Pete and Kera stayed overnight at five different wineries in Napa Valley and Sonoma and put more than 1,000 miles on the car. While Pete did have to do a bit of work on the trip, he says, “We got to stay at these guest houses that aren’t open to the public, so we were getting spoiled the whole time.” They also spent a few days at the Santa Barbara Four Seasons resort.

A FEW WEEKS AFTER THEY GRADUATE college, Alison Richter and newly minted Marine Matthew Warrick will wed June 8 at Bonhomme Presbyterian Church, where they met in eighth-grade confirmation class. Alison, who attends Maryville University, reconnected with Matthew, who plays football for the Naval Academy, at their ACT testing site when they were high school juniors. She asked him to lunch, and they’ve been dating ever since. The couple has managed a long-distance romance for the last three-and-a-half years. “The Naval Academy was a really big decision, committing not only the next four years of his life, but also the next five years to the military,” Alison says.

“It’s been a really fun ride, though. We’ve both learned to be flexible.” She has been able to attend many of Matthew’s football games over the years during frequent visits to Annapolis, Md. It was during a Jan. 20 visit with Matthew’s family that the future Marine proposed. While the Warricks were rearranging their suitcases in the car, Matthew took advantage of a moment alone with Alison on the waterfront to pop the question. “He hadn’t even taken the ring out before I said yes,” Alison says. With fewer than five months to plan the wedding, during which Matthew will wear his uniform, Alison says she’s been grateful for the assistance her future sisters-in-law have provided. She’s excited about the music she’s selected for her bridesmaids’ procession: the Jurassic Park theme. “A boss of mine told me she wanted that for her wedding but her church wouldn’t allow it. I listened to it and it’s beautiful, and there are perfect cues for each woman to walk in to,” she says. Starting a new life together in Annapolis, where Matthew’s first assignment is as assistant Navy football coach, is as thrilling to Alison as the wedding day itself. “I’ve lived at home, and he’s been at the Naval Academy, which is very structured, so it’s going to be the first time we’re really moving out and being on our own,” she says. “We’ll be really happy to spend at least a year together without this distance.”

Ladue Middle School teacher Nikki Burns was in the middle of a disaster: A plumber broke a pipe and flooded her home. In the stressful aftermath, she found herself dazed by the renovation process, standing in the middle of an aisle at Home Depot with a glazed look on her face. Luckily, her savior happened to be walking down the aisle toward her. Sara Hentz, a commercial realtor and the mother of one of Burns’ students, was just the person to help get her house back in order. Hentz’s passion is sourcing unique pieces and helping people with home construction projects. Despite friendly arguments and “creative differences,” the team created a wonderful home for Burns—and remained friends. “Every piece has a story,” Hentz explains. “And a fight behind it!” Burns adds. T&S | What were you doing at Home Depot when Sara found you? NB | I was looking at kitchen appliances and flooring. I’d been there three times, for hours, sweating! She comes in, looks around a minute and says, “We’ll take that.” SH | We reconfigured the kitchen, knocked out a wall—we fought about that. I wanted the fridge moved, and we fought about that. But in the end it turned out! T&S | Tell me about the kitchen materials. SH | The cabinets are just from IKEA. We got them in Chicago. T&S | Sara, you have a knack for finding great pieces. What did you do in this space? SH | I got this chair at a garage sale and just happened to be recovering it in this fabric and it really works in Nikki’s living room. There are other great finds, like the French ottoman in the guest room and the vintage brass coffee table in the living room. T&S | Styling a bookshelf is a skill. What are your tips? SH | I like to use things people have, some personal elements like photographs and knickknacks. I try to keep it not too uniform: in this using a picture, a round tray…and a lot of books we found all over at estate sales. T&S | How can people decorate without breaking the bank? SH | Framing special pieces adds a lot to decor. We reframed some of Nikki’s personal items and pictures, and things like sheet music (her son is a musician) and vintage maps. Mixing the frames also is fun when you’re grouping pictures. It’s easy to collect old frames from estate sales and antiques malls, and they look great combined. T&S | The dining room table has a story, too. NB | Sara wanted to do this special process on it that essentially strips all the finish off and gives it an antiqued, weathered look. I was hesitant, but she was adamant that it would be great. The next thing I know, Sara is out in the backyard with her son, Josh, pouring this solution on the table. I really love how it turned out! T&S | Was it tough, considering your creative differences at times? SH | I think Nikki has really great taste. Just finding things and putting them in place is often hard to agree on. Some people get overwhelmed when they go shopping, and I had her take some risks. NB | Sara wanted it to be eclectic and pretty, but I also wanted it to be homey and cozy, which I think it is! I’m thrilled. Vintage mirrors are layered on the antique credenza and flanked by mother-of-pearl lamps from T.J. Maxx.

WE TEND TO EQUATE A YOUTHFUL APPEARANCE WITH TIGHT, wrinkle-free skin. But it’s not that simple. We’ve all seen individuals whose lines have been lifted, pulled, stretched and Botoxed away. The problem is, they usually don’t look young. They look lifted, pulled, stretched and Botoxed. “Aging isn’t limited to wrinkles,” says Dr. Dee Anna Glaser of SLUCare, the physicians of Saint Louis University. “Facial bones, muscle and fat deteriorate as we age. Surgery and Botox have their place in the anti-aging arsenal, but they can’t eliminate sunken, haggard cheeks and restore the full, rounded contours of youth.” For that, many consumers turn to injectible fillers like Restylane or Juvederm, gels made with hyaluronic acid, a sugar that occurs naturally in the skin. “The injected filler combines with water in the skin, restoring lost fullness and smoothing out crevices and folds,” she explains. “Results are instantaneous, natural looking and can last up to a year.” But there’s a new filler on the horizon that promises to be the best yet for diminishing the gaunt hollows of age. “Juvederm Voluma is the latest generation of hyaluronic acid facial volumizers,” says Glaser, who has offices at SLUCare’s midtown and Des Peres locations. “Other forms of Juvederm do the trick on fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, nose and eyes, but Voluma was specifically developed for use in the cheek area and midface region.” SLU was one of only 15 dermatology and plastic surgery centers in the U.S. and

Even if you’re blessed with good looks, staying beautiful requires effort — and sometimes a little extra help. In this edition, local physicians and a skin care professional discuss how to rejuvenate skin and shape up after weight loss.

[ fountain of youth ] What are those essential ingredients in ‘age-defying’ products and how do they work? While they may seem like magic, skin rejuvenators are based on solid science. >> dr. joseph muccini, DERMATOLOGIST, MIDAMERICA SKIN HEALTH & VITALITY CENTER There are a handful of strategies that are part of the age-defying process. Preventing damage that occurs with aging, reversing existing damage or doing a combination of these things can force the skin to behave in a way that it otherwise wouldn’t. In other words, pressure it to act younger. There are different nuanced ways to prevent and reverse sun damage. Anyone concerned about his or her health and looks should use sunscreen. It’s like a firewall: it prevents additional sun damage. There’s also a pill called Heliocare, which is used to mop up sun damage so that unstable molecules called free radicals won’t cause DNA damage. Free radicals occur when molecules become ‘excited’ by ultraviolet light, causing them to transform into something they were not meant to be. Free radical scavengers hunt and destroy free radicals, which causes aging. Vitamin C is a free radical scavenger and an antioxidant. It reverses sun damage and also is necessary for collagen synthesis. Collagen forces skin to behave. It makes it soft, supple and youthful.

THE FACE & THE BODY SPA There are a variety of key ingredients in skin-care products that help ward off the effects of aging, the environment and sun damage. Epidermal growth factors are one example. Usually found in serums, epidermal growth factors stimulate new cell growth. They help to increase the rate of skin renewal, which slows down as we age. Retinol is another essential ingredient in anti-aging products. Retinol is an over-the-counter version of the prescribed medication tretinoin, but it’s not as harsh or drying. Retinol is good for cell turnover and also is effective in treating hyperpigmentation or dark spots. Peptides, which also are found in skin rejuvenators, reduce wrinkles and fine lines in the face. Unlike Botox, which temporarily paralyzes muscles, peptides temporarily relax them. Vitamin C is another important ingredient and powerful antioxidant. It helps to build collagen, which makes skin plump and smooth. The difference between products sold in doctors’ offices and those in spas is the percentage of the active ingredient. Medical-grade products are stronger, but those sold in spas have milder side effects.

full face-lifts: then & now // Today’s face-lifts are as different from those of 15 years ago as apples and oranges—or raisins and grapes. “Years ago, it was about peeling, stretching and cutting excess skin,” explains DR. MIKE NAYAK OF NAYAK PLASTIC SURGERY. “But, just as all that pulling won’t make a raisin look like a grape, a face-lift performed 15 years ago didn’t make a patient’s face look younger—just tighter.” Though there’s still a role for removing excess skin, “the single biggest change to face-lifts is a better understanding of what occurs in an aging face and how to treat each section appropriately,” Nayak says. The goal is a softer, more natural-looking face. “Nowadays, I remove very little fat.” Treatment begins on a foundational level. “We lift the face by building volume, and replace bony and soft-tissue volume loss with appropriate implants, fat transfers and/or injectibles,” Nayak says. “The foundation serves as a fulcrum so that when we do a nice brow lift or upper face-lift, and then perform a well-executed lower lift, the mid-section of the face gets lifted.” Today’s face-lift is also safer, Nayak notes. “It’s done with sedation and local numbing agents. It’s not the same operation it used to be.”

Despite what friends and families say, and what the scale indicates, some patients feel they look as bad or worse after gastric bypass than they did before. By removing excess skin, reconstructive plastic surgery gives patients a visual reward for their hard work and is an incentive for them to move forward rather than slip back into bad habits. It improves a patient’s opinion of how he or she really looks. The number of surgeries required depends on the amount of excess skin and where it’s located. I typically prefer to work from the top down. I start with the arms and chest and then proceed to the abdomen and thighs. It may take two or perhaps three surgeries. They are performed in the outpatient portion of a hospital or an outpatient surgery center. Excision of excess skin on the arms and breasts is an outpatient procedure, while the tummy and thighs may require an overnight stay. When performed by a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon, the surgeries are very safe. Results can be amazing.

Reconstructive plastic surgeries are scheduled at least three months apart. They will remove hanging skin, stretch marks and laxities that diet and exercise can’t eliminate. People carry their weight in different places. Sometimes it’s widespread, sometimes it’s more localized. If they carried most of their weight in the lower body, then that’s where they’re probably going to need the most reconstruction. A scar is a small price to pay for the amount of correction a patient will achieve. He or she is trading rolls and rolls of skin for a thin flat line. The scar could be a foot or two long, depending on where the excision occurs. For example, the excision scar on an arm can be 12 inches; it goes from the armpit to the elbow. But I will tell you that typically most surgical incisions look better than any stretch mark. If you can remove 20 to 30 stretch marks on the abdomen, and in return, get one thin line — that’s a no-brainer.

A new facial laser gradually improves a patient’s skin with little to no downtime. “The Clear + Brilliant laser is very good for hyperpigmentation, reducing pore size, minimizing mild acne scars, smoothing fine lines and reducing superficial wrinkles,” says DR. They are treated with botulinium toxin A, which is contained in Botox, Dysport or Xeomin. We use all three products. The newest product is Xeomin, which, like the others, temporarily paralyzes muscles to smooth wrinkles. It’s very similar to Botox, but differs in its chemical structures. Some proteins cluster and attach to the Botox molecule. What’s significant is that some people can develop an antibody response to ‘fight’ the proteins. Over time, that response may reduce the effectiveness of Botox. This doesn’t happen often, but it does occur. Xeomin doesn’t contain those proteins. That’s its claim to fame. Protection is still paramount when it comes to skin care. People who use Dysport and Botox are less likely to develop wrinkles, and people who limit their exposure to the sun will have fewer wrinkles than those who do not. That’s because the sun destroys collagen.

MEET JEANIE | Jeanie Whitaker has been a surgical nurse for years, currently at the SSM St. Clare Surgical Center in Fenton. At 63, she is vibrant and energetic, ready for a little fun and a laugh at any moment. “It’s important to keep updating your look,” she says. SHE WANTS | Anything but pink hair. “I’m open to anything! I like to mix up my look every so often—change is good.” She also likes a little volume that will last through her long surgical hours and still be ready for the evening to follow. HER STYLE | “The thing about my hair I like most is the vibrant red color. RE Ramsey Hair in Warson Woods, says he offers clients quick cuts that last. “If a client is in my chair more than 15 minutes, I’m doing something wrong. And the cut should last at least eight weeks,” he says. Ramsey is biased toward longer hair, which is not an option for Whitaker. “I’ll give you a cut that will grow out well,” he says. “That way you can allow a little length to come in over time.” He starts with an all-over color to bring her bright highlights down and to warm up the tone. “You want highlights to appear as if they’re really from the sun—the reaction should be that you have great color—not that you have great highlights,” Ramsey advises. “When it was a trend to have your colors done, I was always an ‘autumn,’” Whitaker says. “So it makes sense to have a warmer color. I have already been dressing in those tones for years.” For a new cut, Ramsey slimmed down the shape through her neck, leaving it longer toward AF TE R the crown. “Now this is a fabulous neckline!” he exclaims as the new shape starts to develop. The more elegant shape is just as simple to style. In damp hair, a small dollop of ColorProof LiftIt Foam Mousse is worked through to the roots. The small, 1-inch barrel round brushes are used like rollers to bring lift and volume through the crown. To finish, a light dusting of Redken Outshine is applied and finger-tousling loosens the look.

THE REACTION | Whitaker reports that her husband—who doesn’t normally have a big reaction to cosmetic changes—was wowed by the new look. “One of the doctors said I look 20 years younger!” she says. “I’ve been following Robert’s styling advice, and I love it!”

YOU WOULD LOVE 17-YEAR-OLD ‘SOPHIE’ the minute you met her. She is funny, outgoing, powerful, a natural-born leader and ‘out there.’ She speaks her mind, and you’d never guess what a complicated home life she leads. Her biological parents never married, and her mom, ‘Sandra,’ has denied access to her dad, who lives on the East Coast. Sophie was born a month before her mom turned 16, and since the breakup with her daughter’s father, Sandra has dated a long line of boyfriends who come into Sophie’s life and then leave. ‘Natalie’s’ parents divorced two years ago, and her dad moved out of state. She sees him every two to three months for a weekend visit. He has a live-in girlfriend, who is 7 months pregnant. Natalie, who is in Catholic grade school, was upset that her dad got a woman pregnant out-of-wedlock, and even more disturbed when he talked about aborting the fetus. ‘Lanie’s’ dad attends her softball games, drinks two to three beers in the stands, and then drives the family home. ‘Tyler’s’ mom works full time as a lawyer, and she is constantly on her cell phone. She checks her messages and texts her replies in the car, at the dinner table, in the stands at games—everywhere. She is addicted to her iPhone.

I could go on with many more stories like these. Children are always watching their parents—and learning something about life, relationships and how to cope with challenges and stress. It’s not my job to tell you how to live, but know this: If you want your kids to adopt any particular values or lifestyle, you’d better walk your talk. ‘Sophie’s’ mom doesn’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to discussing abstinence or dating relationships. Sophie is actually lightyears ahead of her mom in this department, thanks to growing up fast. No matter how old your children are, you can benefit from stepping back and assessing how you are living your life. Are you living out the morals and values you envision for your children? I stopped ordering even a single beer or glass of wine at dinner with our kids because I wanted to be able to look them square in the eyes and say, ‘You should never drink and drive.’ I could say it with total authority because I was acting with integrity. THE MUSICAL GYPSY HAS BEEN IMMENSELY POPULAR ever since it opened on Broadway in 1959. It’s been revived several times in New York, turned into two movies, and done on professional and amateur stages all over the world. New York Times theater reviewer Ben Brantley wrote that Gypsy “may be the greatest of all American musicals,” and his predecessor Frank Rich opined that “Gypsy is nothing if not Broadway’s own brassy, unlikely answer to King Lear.” In the Stray Dog Theatre production, director Gary F. Bell has chosen to grant mother Rose and daughter Louise a wistful reconciliation at the end. Bell has taken a chance, choosing to do a big musical like Gypsy on the relatively limited stage at Tower Grove Abbey. But he and scenic designers David Blake and Justin Been worked smartly with what they have. The whole production takes place on the stage of a shabby vaudeville theater. Deborah Sharn plays Rose, the ultimate stage mother, determined to make a star first of daughter June and then, when June escapes her clutches, of Louise. The role stretches Sharn’s range, and she can appear a little mechanical at times, especially early on. But give her one of Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim’s songs, and Sharn is right there with Rose. I wouldn’t have minded a touch more madness in Everything’s Coming Up Roses, but Sharn nails Rose’s Turn, that marvelously complex final summation of Rose’s life. Equally rich is the performance of Sabra Sellers as Louise, the ugly duckling daughter who finally can be a swan as Gypsy Rose Lee, the queen of burlesque. Sellers occupies in every corner of the shy girl filled with longing, as she transforms into the confident, glamorous, worldly-wise star. Jennifer Theby-Quinn sparkles, as always, as June. With lovely restraint, Ken Haller plays Herbie, the theatrical agent who falls hopelessly in love with Rose. Jennie Ryan, Kimberly Still and Paula Stoff Dean deserve special mention for their comic skills as the three past-their-prime strippers who instruct Louise that, in their business, “You gotta have a gimmick.” This number is almost always a showstopper, and it is here. Gypsy continues through this weekend. Usually the Rep does a play before community theaters pick it up, but the reverse is happening with Opus. The West End Players Guild just did a fine production, and like Gypsy, Opus takes us into the private lives of performers, in this case a string quartet that has just replaced one of its members. He’s a brilliant musician but too troubled for the tight quarters of such an ensemble. Opus is a very clever piece, pushing a little too hard at the end, but a rich and amusing play. The Rep will do it in January 2014. Coming up more immediately—already opened, in fact—is an adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre at Mustard Seed Theatre. This weekend, St. Louis Actors’ Studio brings us perhaps the greatest play of the post-World War II era, Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. With Bobby Miller directing, both the comedy and the pathos should be fully explored. From the same post-war period comes Leonard Bernstein’s one-act opera about a troubled marriage in one of the newly sprouting suburbs, Trouble in Tahiti. It opens Union Avenue Opera’s season. And Shakespeare Festival St. Louis rolls out its annual celebration of the Bard’s birthday, Shake 38, with abbreviated versions of all 38 plays popping up all over St. Louis from April 19 through the Bard’s actual (reputed) birthday, April 23.

SET IN A SMALL, UNASSUMING SPOT a block east of Skinker Boulevard, this new Thai place in the Loop incorporates elements from several Asian cuisines. There are some Japanese dishes on the menu, and the place bills itself as ‘Northern Thai,’ which leans toward the Chinese style of mixing a variety of vegetables with smaller portions of meat. Sticky rice is served with several dishes, in the Northern Thai custom. Like most Thai food, dishes here can get pretty spicy, but they ask about your level of tolerance. Some dishes are soupy (but not as coconut milk-based as ‘central Thai,’ we were told). And some are altogether different than what I’ve seen elsewhere —like the Sai Qua, or grilled pork sausage served with sticky rice. One thing is constant: the delicious complexity of Thai flavors, which blend lime, basil, lemongrass, hot red pepper, sugar, tamarind and coconut milk.

A starter of Papaya Salad ($5) was refreshing, with its strands of green papaya in a tangy dressing of Thai chilies, lime, garlic, sweet tamarind and fish sauce. Bits of tomato, salty dried shrimp and green beans were in there, as well as the optional (and highly recommended) salted crab claws. Those tiny shells are packed with flavor; suck the juice out of them! The warm starters are where it really gets interesting. Do not miss the Muu Ping ($5) four skewers of pork delectably marinated in garlic paste, coriander seeds, palm sugar and pepper and glazed with a coconut milk reduction. There is something transcendental about meat with a sugary, sticky glaze. Sai Oua ($6), pork sausage with Thai herbs, is heavily scented with lemongrass, which might be too distinctive for many. However, spiciness is not the issue with Pad Thai ($7 plus $2 for added meat), the dish most widely associated with Thai cuisine.

The version here is quite mild, with unsauced rice noodles stir-fried with an assortment of veggies, crushed peanuts, tofu, dried shrimp and bits of egg. It was enjoyable enough, but could have used a more defining flavor. Absolutely delicious was the Pad Ka Prao ($7 plus $2 for added shrimp), a soupy dish with a soy sauce base marvelously flavored with Queen of Siam basil, a fragrant herb with heavy notes of fennel. Khao Soi ($8) is a Northern Thai curry noodle soup with an extra element of flavor from pickled mustard greens (and texture from crispy yellow noodles). Very flavorful, it has a base of curry paste and coconut milk and some bite. One of the best dishes, somewhat to my surprise, was the Fried Rice ($7), made with a type of soy sauce unique to this cuisine. Savory and buttery tasting, it came tossed with veggies, eggs and meat of your choice.

[ NOSTALGIA ] BISSINGER’S by judy goodman FOR ANYONE WHO GREW UP IN ST. LOUIS, childhood memories often Lakes, you’ll discover a include Bissinger’s. A local tradition, and one of few hand-crafted chocolatiers left in the country, Bissinger’s has been making fine confections using European chocolates for more than 350 years (not all here in town). Named ‘Confiseur Imperial’ or ‘Confectioner of the Empire’ by King Louis XIV in 17th century France, the Bissinger family cultivated a fan club of French courts, European nobility and heads of state, including Ludwig of Bavaria, Napoleon Bonaparte and the Rothschilds. In 1845, the Bissinger family left France and came to the United States, bringing along their master chocolatiers, as well as their European-style chocolate and generations of secrets. They opened a small Bissinger’s store in St. Louis in 1927 on McPherson Avenue in the Central West End. That extraordinarily elegant store reigned in the neighborhood for more than 80 years. I have childhood memories of dropping in with my grandmother to pick out one special treat to enjoy. And that was really, really hard to do, as everything looked so enticing. And generations of other children had that same experience. My children’s grandmother made the choice a bit easier, selecting chocolate-covered caramel lollipops as her special treat for them. Bissinger’s now has two locations in St. Louis, one at Plaza Frontenac and the other on Maryland Plaza in the CWE. The latter features a cafe and has taken the chocolate concept a step further by pairing chocolates with wine, coffee and other confections and pastries. And if you are traveling to the Land of 1,000

third Bissinger’s store in Minneapolis. With the old-time chocolate shop mostly a memory, Bissinger’s is now sold at Whole Foods Markets, Neiman Marcus, and, of course, online. But despite marketing innovations that are PHOTO COURTESY OF BISSINGER’S necessary for a business’ very existence in the 21st century, some things—the important ones to chocolate lovers—are still done the old way. The experienced craftsmen at Bissinger’s stay true to the long-standing family recipes, using traditional copper pots to hand stir and dip their chocolate confections. While carrying on its centuries-old legacy, the company continually adds new, and sometimes trendy, confections. After two years in development, the confectioner unveiled a new chocolate-covered Point Reyes Original Blue Cheese Wine Grape at the recent 2013 Fancy Food Show. The new confection is a combination of sweet and savory, with plump muscat grapes infused with shiraz incorporating a thin layer of Point Reyes Original Blue and, of course, a coating of rich, 60-percent European-style chocolate. Anchored in the past, Bissinger’s is also a player in the 21st century of flavors.

They enlist the help of a hypnotherapist (Rosario Dawson) to jog the young man’s memory. What follows digs deep into the human pysche, exposing dark secrets and memories both real and fabricated. It’s a serious mind-bender, and director Danny Boyle loves to twist reality, sometimes a bit too much. But overall, it’s an engrossing, disturbing thriller that had me switching loyalties until the end—and I’m still not sure I made the right choice. One thing is certain: After this film, I’m never volunteering for hypnosis. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Fans of films like Inception and Fight Club will love Trance, but those wanting a straightforward story should pass. —C.K.

Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier plays out at times like a heavy-handed history lesson, with stilted dialogue and French horn swells underscoring every inspirational moment. But the film doesn’t strike out either. Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford give charismatic performances as the fleet-footed Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers executive determined to integrate the major leagues, respectively. It’s fun to watch Robinson round the bases, and moving to see him challenge the prejudices of sports fans, reporters and even his own teammates. Ultimately, 42 is a good, if safe, introduction to the country’s struggles with racism in athletics and beyond. SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Yes, especially sports fans and history buffs. —R.K. From yellow cake, powdered sugar, butter and cream cheese spring 75 varieties of gooey butter delight. Park Avenue Coffee serves the dessert with notes of amaretto, key lime and white chocolate macadamia nut cookie dough—and those are just the normal flavors. The little coffee and pastry shop, open early and late, invites cake lovers to fill an orange mug, pull up a plush armchair and try a slice (or seven). Supporting other local businesses is a priority for Park Avenue Coffee, says Talan Cooksey, director of operations, whose favorite gooey butter flavor is cinnamon roll. The shop brews beans from Chauvin Coffee Company, a St. Louis roaster, and has recently partnered with Kakao Chocolate to create dark chocolate and burnt salted caramel gooey butter cakes. Although only 12 flavors of GBC are available on a given day, customers can order any kind for pickup with 24-hour notice. The pastry can be shipped anywhere; every year the shop sends a gooey butter cake to a customer in New Zealand. “I don’t know that we’ve done either one of the poles,” Cooksey says. “I think we should do it just to say we have.”

LAFAYETTE PARK

Lafayette Park is full of firsts. It’s the first public park west of the Mississippi (1836), the first St. Louis historic district (1972), and home to Missouri’s first public monument (1868), created by the country’s first professional female sculptor. The 30-acre green, named for Revolutionary War hero and onetime St. Louis visitor the Marquis de Lafayette, anchors its French environs. Painted lady rowhouses outlined in creamy colors surround the park, some survivors of the 1896 tornado that tore through the area. The romantic iron footbridge replaced a wooden one the cyclone destroyed. Swans circle the pond, unfazed by the squawking of their less-lovely geese companions. There’s a boathouse, a gazebo and a popular playground. Couples walk hand-in-hand, or, frequently leash-in-hand; every kind of canine can be found on these grounds. A mishmash of history is on display, with George Washington surveying one half of the park and Missouri Sen. Thomas Hart Benton overseeing the other. A trio of British cannons sunk during the Revolution face the fields where the St. Louis Perfectos play ‘vintage base ball’ by the game’s 19th-century rules. And a bust of Lafayette, given by the people of France in honor of America’s bicentennial, presides over its namesake in the The Park House.

In 1815, Napoleon lost the Battle of Waterloo and fled. Nearly two centuries later, a pair of St. Louis residents needed a name for their new bed-and-breakfast at 1815 Lafayette Ave. Finding inspiration in their address and French-flavored neighborhood, they christened it Napoleon’s Retreat. Stacy and Brian Kistler, who bought the business in 2011, work to make the restored Victorian rowhouse fit for an emperor. The couple offers a more youthful perspective than many B&B owners. Fairly new to the city (they moved here six years ago), they are in their 30s, while many of the innkeepers they meet are decades older and retired from other careers. “That gives us a different appreciation for the city,” Stacy Kistler says. “We tend to look at it as, What’s fresh and new and exciting?” She’s noticed a younger crowd frequenting B&Bs, as well. “I think it’s awesome more people in their 20s and 30s are staying at them,” she says. Serving breakfast is Kistler’s favorite part of the enterprise. She tries to stick with the Gallic theme, cooking souffles, crepes and quiches, and occasionally indulges guests with raspberry Chambord French toast made with croissants. “My goal is to make something people won’t make for themselves,” she says.
