EDITOR’S NOTE

W

elcome to the July issue in which we've come over all veggie and vegan. Having noticed a huge increase in the number of veggie and vegan restaurants around and also finding lots of my friends are adopting the lifestyle, I decided it was time to find out more. We've got facts and figures, a handy guide from well-known Facebook vegan Louise O'Loan on great places to find vegan food, and some top supermarket picks too. In the interview section we meet Sonia Nagi, who stopped eating meat after visiting a slaughter house at the age of 12, and the Middleton sisters, Phoebe and Sophie, who are determined to make healthier sweeties with raw chocolate. We also chat to Julia Maria Tovey, chief operating officer at the American Mission Hospital, about getting to the top in a trditionally male-dominated field. Sticking with the veggie/vegan theme, this month's wellbeing section takes a look at the ugly side of the beauty business and Behnaz Sanjana comes up with some homemade potions to help you kick the beauty counter habit. And in the travel section, we head to some of the USA's most veggie-friendly cities. Travel continues as a theme in the fashion section with great ideas for packing a capsule wardrobe and the editor's choice page this month features a round-up of the best luggage around - I am serioulsy lusting after the vintage Globe Trotter! Alongside our usual round-up of news from the worlds of fashion and beauty, look out for celebrity hairdresser tips on avoiding hat hair throughout the summer. And, if you have little ones, turn to the parenting section for our massive guide to the island's summer camps, with 40 options to choose from, as well as a selection of online courses which will also keep the youngsters entertained. However you're spending your summer, I hope it's a good one!

What’s caught our eye in the news this month.

Your Shout I’m excited to know of the Organicare range of skincare and cosmetics. My skin is very sensitive and doesn’t react well to the harsh ingredients in conventional creams and lotions. Besides, the fact that there’s a woman spearheading organic personal care products, all which are made here in Bahrain, that makes me happier. Also, as Fehmina rightly points out, we consumers of this day and age need to ask questions about what’s in the bottles and boxes we buy. I’m going to gift myself some organic, vegan lipsticks and cheek stains to start off with. Diandra, Adliya.

Win, Win, Win! Heads up, dining enthusiasts! We’re giving away two vouchers worth BD25 from Al Areen Palace & Spa’s Rimal and Saffron restaurants. Rimal Al Areen is an all-day dining restaurant offering guests a selection of gourmet wonders from its extensive international menu. It’s the perfect place to take a breather within the resort’s picturesque surroundings. Saffron Al Areen is a venue fit for royalty, with its majestic shades of gold and maroon accentuated with a high ceiling and charming Middle Eastern touches. The menu is inspired by Khaleeji fusion cuisine – a contemporary take on quintessential Bahraini dishes. Dining here, while enjoying the spectacular view of the grand outdoor pool, is guaranteed to be a memorable affair. The vouchers can be redeemed for either lunch or dinner. Check out our social media pages for a chance to win.

I really appreciate that your magazine is always tuned in with the social times. The June issue was filled with pointers for Ramadan – the best places to go to, what to wear and how to bring the essence of the blessed month in to our homes, as well as fresh ideas for a quick Eid getaway. I also liked that you encourage women to know their wheels and are giving safety on the roads its due. I highly recommend that lady drivers know the basics of their cars, so they don’t end up as absolute damsels in distress in the event of a breakdown. Thank you WTM for being truly local with a global appeal. Amal, Sanad.

# According to Dr Human Fatemi, medical director, IVI Fertility Middle East, the region has unique and specific factors leading to infertility – social, cultural and religious in nature – which are different from Western countries. The centre exclusively offers the Carrier Genetic Test (CGT) – a simple blood test that’s carried out when planning a family to prevent the risk of having a baby with genetic disorders. The CGT is highly recommended to all couples who are attempting a pregnancy by natural or IVF means. # The UAE consumes 18.4 tons of CO2 per capita per year – nearly four times higher than the global average. But the nation is moving away from crude solutions and swapping them for ones of the eco variety. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and UAE vice president, has announced a new energy strategy and USD163 billion of investment in alternative energy over the next three decades. These macro-level changes will gradually transform Dubai.

July in Focus What’s on our radar this month?

Game Point

The 37th National Sports Federation’s General Assembly made its mark and selected a new board of directors for the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) for the 2017-2020 term. Amongst those re-elected were Shaikha Hayat Al Khalifa, bagging votes from representatives of 28 sports federations to keep her post as board member. She is also the president of the Bahrain Table Tennis Association. Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and Ali Isa Eshaqi all retained their seats at the board for another four-year period.

Tech Boost

Tech-savvy women can rejoice as the path to achieving their start-up dreams is looking more attainable. The Central Bank of Bahrain announced the creation of a regulatory sandbox that will allow start-ups and financial tech firms to test and experiment their banking ideas without first going through the licensing process that can be lengthy and costly. Eligibility is based on innovation and customer benefit in addition to having the intention and the ability to deploy the service in Bahrain after the sandbox period ends.

Big 30 Celebration

Sneha, a school for kids with special needs run by the Indian Ladies Association, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with year-long festivities to mark the occasion. A family day has already been hosted for students and their families. After the summer break, children will be involved in three back to back events - the Sneha writing competition, sports day and an art exhibition. An assisted art painting exhibition is schedule for November, set to showcase and sell 80 paintings made by the children. The events will culminate with the annual day in December.

WAR ON WASTE

Veteran British designer Dame Vivienne Westwood has urged people to buy fewer clothes to help protect the environment. Speaking to the BBC’s Newsbeat backstage at her recent London Fashion Week Men’s show, she said: “My message is ‘buy less, choose well, make it last’.” Her circus-themed collection was only the second time she has shown at the men’s event and featured recycled plastic bottles as shoes and aluminium cans pinned to tights, as a campaign against fashion waste. Adding: “It’s [about] quality, not quantity, not landfill," the punk-era icon said a change in shopping habits would allow designers to make more beautiful clothes. www.womanthismonth.com

Jourdan Walks Michael Kors has announced Jourdan Dunn as the latest face of its street style campaign Michael Kors The Walk. The British model’s It bag of choice for the campaign is the Mercer Dome Satchel, worn in an upbeat shade of sunflower yellow along with the best of summer’s MICHAEL Michael Kors ready-to-wear and accessories. In a nod to the brand’s array of bag customisation options, Jourdan brought playful personality to her Mercer with everything from gold-tone keychains and a floral appliqué handbag strap to a scarf tied around the handle of the satchel. The new campaign is the fourth instalment in an ongoing series, with new style personalities joining Michael Kors The Walk each season to spotlight key handbags and ready-to-wear. A profile of Jourdan will also run on the brand’s editorial platform, DestinationKors.com.

O n e f o r t h e G i r ls Reputed as a maker of men's watches that are both unusual and elegant, deLaCour has decided to put its unique sensitivity and sensuality into the creation of a timepiece that is ultra feminine and designed exclusively for women. The Passion is inspired by women, their attitude and strong character. It is the complete opposite of minimalist with a marriage of two materials: white gold for its main external visible case, and titanium for the inner case. The combination of diamonds consists of 13 carats and lends its subtlety to the diamond-paved edges. The timepieces are named Passion Forever (with heart-shaped diamonds), Passion Allure (with square diamonds) and Passion Sparkle (with pear-shaped diamonds).

Classic heels and a fun bag, that won’t take up much space in your suitcase, can, once again, be added to other elements of this wardrobe collection to give additional funky looks. PEOPLE | interview

Breaking the Glass Ceiling Chief operating officer (COO) of American Mission Hospital, Julia Maria Tovey thrives on a challenge. She chats to Behnaz Sanjana about her journey to the coveted top table in a traditionally male bastion.

J

ulia Tovey started her career in London’s teaching hospitals, including at the well-known Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. She went on to further study and specialise in neonatal intensive care and cardiothoracic nursing, which primarily deals with the high-level care required for those on by-pass machines. Having completed the neonatal-paediatric flight training programme in Houston, Texas, covering the transportation of sick children by air, she worked with Saudi Aramco’s hospital to set up its flight team – a first for the GCC – spending 15 years there before moving to Bahrain. In the interim, Julia earned a Master’s degree in business administration, underwent a risk manager’s course from Florida University as well as completing a course on the management of healthcare delivery at Harvard University. Along with an advanced flight physiology course at the Royal Airforce in Cranfield, UK, she has a total of 14 years of training under her belt. She says: “I felt I had something to give to the nursing profession, knowing in my heart that I wanted to work with children. The joy you feel when tiny babies, who are just starting out with life, are able to go home, is immeasurable.” Her extensive training laid the groundwork for her to reach the pinnacle she has attained today. As COO of American Mission Hospital (AMH) for the past seven years, she says: “Nine divisions, including support services, nursing, quality control, marketing and the community department, report directly to me. I also oversee the operations of the ambulatory care centres of AMH in Riffa, Saar and Amwaj. Her journey has brought her to a momentous achievement – becoming the first woman COO in the AMH’s 120-year history. She says: “It makes me proud that I can make a difference here and happy that the organisation and the CEO have the trust in me, thanks to me being very quality driven. I believe every patient should have access to high quality, affordable healthcare in a safe and risk-free environment.” Did she encounter resistance on assuming this role? “Of course! People thought: one; www.womanthismonth.com

Julia Maria Tovey

she’s a nurse, and two; she’s a woman! There had always been a man in this seat. I knew I was under the microscope and my success was being speculated upon. Trying to implement change is always a challenge; that’s human nature. But it’s what keeps me going. Also, my nursing background gives me a broader spectrum of understanding how things work right at the frontline”. Julia remembers the clinical part of nursing as her first love. She says: “After 30 years in healthcare, I felt I’ve got so much to share, give back and contribute. AMH is a not-forprofit organsaition and I feel very passionate about doing good for the community in Bahrain.” This year, Julia and her community outreach team are focusing on children with special needs. “A hospital can be an unfamiliar environment for kids with autism or Down’s Syndrome,” she explains. “So rather than them coming to us, we take the care to them and their families. We also render our

honorary services to the many labour camps in the country.” Another area she has driven forward is subsidising medical services for the less welloff. She says: “Our vision is to be the best nongovernment hospital providing affordable healthcare for everybody. A significant portion of our revenue goes towards helping patients who can’t afford to pay for treatment. AMH runs a free clinic for labourers every Friday. Over four years, we’ve provided free care to nearly 4,000 patients.” She has also been instrumental in bringing about positive change in the hospital’s operations – something she puts down to her people skills and perseverance. Her message to aspiring young women is: “If you’re passionate about what you do, then just go for your goals. Working your way from the bottom up helps you to make better executive decisions on a managerial level. There will be obstacles along the way, but don’t ever give up at the first hurdle.” g July 2017

Sweet and Raw If you think being vegan means giving up your favourite chocolate hit, think again. Sisters Phoebe and Sophie Middleton, of Raw Candy, have plans to serve the island’s healthy-eating chocoholics.

R

aw chocolate might sound as if you’re heading to the forest and munching on cacao beans but, in fact, it describes a delicious product that’s made from cold-pressed cacao butter and beans that have not been heated above 45 degrees. This process helps preserve the cacao’s natural nutrients and it’s where the sisters’ products will differ from the mass-produced offerings readily available in the market. Phoebe explains: “The average chocolate bar is about 20 per cent cocoa [heat-treated cacao] and is half sugar. Using the heating process helps with tempering the chocolate so it stays more solid but, once heat is added, it reduces the amount of nutrients.” Having long been interested in clean eating, the sisters studied raw nutrition at the famed Matthew Kenney Culinary in Los Angeles. But Phoebe adds: “I didn’t do chocolate there; that really has been a process of trial and error. I wanted to be able to live this lifestyle but without giving up the things I love!” The sisters launched Raw Candy by selling their products at markets, Words Bookstore Café, Trousseau and Roots Cafe but, such has been the positive response, they’re now setting up their own shop and café, due to open in Seef in the next couple of months. And it sounds like a treat for sweetie lovers with Sophie saying: “The menu will be chocolate, pralines and raw versions of old trashy candy like peanut butter cups, coconut bars and cookie dough. We’ll also have things like turmeric latte using nut milks and butters, granola, cakes and salted caramel – we think of it as sugar for the cool kids!” The journey has been what Sophie describes as a “labour of love” with all the recipes

developed by the sisters and the products all handmade. She says: “We don’t like stuff to sit in packets so it’s all fresh ingredients made in small batches. Working with raw ingredients is challenging but very worthwhile.” Phoebe adds: “It involves things like soaking buckwheat then sprouting it and dehydrating – that means you’ve got a three-day process before you’ve got a useable ingredient, so it is quite labour intensive and time consuming. We don’t use white or brown sugar, only low GI coconut sugar because it’s raw and unprocessed – which means you don’t get the ‘sugar crash’. And there are no chemicals used in any of our products.” “These products are also great for people who have allergies,” says Sophie. “They’re

suitable for those with gluten intolerance and, of course, there’s no dairy. They’re also organic and you can be guaranteed that what you’re eating hasn’t sat in a pot for weeks at a time.” And an indication of the sisters’ passion comes in the confession that they were approached by a larger company to supply their brand but turned down the offer. “We want to maintain the handmade, boutique feel,” says Phoebe, with Sophie adding: “We don’t want to get greedy and flood the market and spoil it. Because the chocolate is so fragile, you have to be very careful and it has to be right.” g For news of the opening follow @raw.candy on Instagram. www.womanthismonth.com

PEOPLE | interview

A Guilt-Free Lifestyle Sonia Nagi, coach at The Healthy Conscience, tells us about her vegan journey. How long have you been vegan? I’ve been vegetarian since childhood. I became vegan around seven years ago. What made you decide to adopt this lifestyle? When I was 12 I went to the slaughterhouse in India with my father. There I saw a hen being killed. That was very traumatising and I could not see any meat as food again. Over the past few years, as I entered into the health and fitness profession, the benefits of a plant-based diet became obvious. Have you found it difficult in Bahrain? Being vegetarian is relatively easy. My husband and I decided to go vegan when we were living in Dubai. It was initially difficult because we were eating out a lot and were always looking for specifically vegan options. Eventually we found a large vegan community there and quite a variety of vegan products. Bahrain has a lot less options, especially when it comes to grocery shopping ,as well as eating out for vegans. Also there is a lot less awareness about veganism here. Avoiding dairy is the toughest. We cook all our meals now and I have a lot of fun experimenting with vegan recipes. Fortunately the vegan awareness here is growing and I can see new products and menu items popping up regularly.

Sonia Nagi

Are there any particular foodstuffs you particularly enjoy or would recommend? I realised that there is a whole universe of vegan recipes out there. I believe in eating as diversely as possible. Half of my daily nutrition comes from fruits

and raw salads. Introducing raw foods into our diets seems to be the key to unlock our health’s potential. Focusing on plant-based foods revealed a lot of things that we were missing, like sprouts, seeds, raw oils, exotic fruits and ancient grains. Quinoa, tofu, chickpeas, kidney beans and soya protein are some of our staples. Is your diet part of an overall lifestyle? What other things do you do? My husband, who is from Bahrain, and I run our private coaching business called The Healthy Conscience where we teach nutrition, yoga, fitness, and corrective exercise. I teach yoga and provide yoga therapy, including pre-natal and post-natal yoga. I decided to quit my job as cabin

crew and learn yoga. I wanted to work on my health. As I progressed in my teacher training, the benefits of being vegan became clearer. My intention is to lead a life that does the least harm to others. This involves being conscious about the impact of all my actions. We try to use eco-friendly products, avoid plastics, reuse and repair as much as we can, reduce consumption by sharing and borrowing rather than buying new, growing food in our garden, we don’t kill insects or use leather. It’s about accepting the fact that we are completely dependent on nature and all its creatures must be respected Are your family supportive? My husband is vegan as well and is a strong advocate of a cruelty-free lifestyle. My parents and siblings live in India and have always been supportive of anything I do. They are all vegetarians now. They follow my advice keenly and are always doing their best to improve their health. Anything else you would like to add? We are at very critical point as far as the future of our health and the health of our planet is concerned. Helping each other become better through awareness and education must be our collective responsibility. July 2017

VEGAN EXPLOSION

Over the past few years the number of people choosing to eat a meat-free or fully vegan diet has increased dramatically. We take a look at the numbers and the facts.

T

he study Vegetarianism in America found that 3.2 per cent of US adults, or 7.3 million people, follow a vegetarian-based diet. Of those around one million are vegan, avoiding all animal products. In the UK a study carried out last year for the Vegan Society and Vegan Life magazine found that the number of people choosing a plant-based diet had grown by 360 per cent over 10 years! While the Middle East does not boast quite those impressive statistics, the numbers are most definitely growing. And, while vegetarianism and veganism have traditionally been associated with animal welfare issues, many of those now opting to cut out meat cite the stated health benefits as their inspiration for change. Advocates of plant-based eating say vegans typically have lower levels of cholesterol and blood pressure, a lower body mass index and reduced risk of death from heart disease and cancer. That their diets often include items such as avocados, nuts and seeds is another plus. Concern for the environment is another driving factor. Around 30 per cent of the Earth’s land surface is used for rearing farm animals and livestock production is responsible for 70 per cent of the

Amazon deforestation in Latin America, where rainforest has been cleared to create new pastures. For those wanting to adopt a greener and cleaner lifestyle, the kitchen cupboard is the place to start. Invaluable resource thekitchn.com gives a helpful list of staples: Beans – A variety of dried and canned as well as lentils and chickpeas. Grains – Such as quinoa, spelt and bulgur to add texture and flavour. Tempeh – A soy protein source that keeps well in the fridge. Tofu – Use it for baking, frying and in soups and stir-fries. Nuts – Whole or chopped for use in salads and grain dishes. Dried fruits – Raisins, apricots and dates for snacking and adding to stews and greens Vegetable stock – Store-bought or made from scratch and frozen. Nutritional yeast – Useful for sauces and as a coating. Miso – Both light and dark for soup and salad dressing. Tahini – Add to sauces and dips. Dried sea vegetables – seaweed and nori to use with rice, kelp and kombu to add flavour to broths.

Coconut oil – Super-versatile from roasting veggies to making rich curries. Maple syrup – Tasty as a natural sweetener. Ground flax seeds – Fibre-filled and nutritious and with a little water can work as an egg substitute. Of course there’s a huge range of recipes available online and some great books too. A couple of our favourites are the Thug Kitchen Cookbook (also check out their Instagram) and Kristy Turner’s But I Could Never Go Vegan! But you can also check out local vegan pages on Facebook — such as Vegan & Vegan Curious in Bahrain, One Arab Vegan and The Healthy Conscience — for great food and lifestyle ideas and information on where to find veggie and vegan products in the Kingdom. www.womanthismonth.com

Famous Vegans As if health benefits, animal welfare and saving the planet weren’t good enough reasons to swear off meat, these famous faces credit their diet with all manner of benefits and show you’d be in good company. Jennifer Lopez The actress, singer and mum of twins says going vegan has upped her energy levels, claiming: “It's basically no dairy, no meat, everything is just plant-based and just from the ground. I love that I'm eating more greens. It makes you feel so much better.” And, at 47, we really can’t argue! Moby Dance musician Moby has long been vocal about his vegan beliefs, even naming his 1996 album Animal Rights and opening a vegan café called TeaNY in New York. He says: "Veganism should be a happy thing, not a miserable one. And we shouldn't make people feel bad or guilty for their lifestyle choices, even if they reject veganism.”

Try This We just visited Plant Café in Hamala – it’s lush!

Olivia Wilde This actress is so dedicated to the cause that she launched her own website, WildeThings.org to promote the vegan lifestyle.

Alicia Silverstone The campaigner and actress has her own vegan and eco-friendly beauty line. She says: “Once I went vegan, I lost the weight I wanted to lose, my nails were stronger, and my skin was glowing. I feel great and I look better now than I did 11 years ago.”

And There’s More Vegans and many vegetarians make conscious lifestyle choices with regard to animal welfare in their cosmetics, household products and even the clothing they wear. Check out herbivoreclothing.com for funky style options and thevegansociety.com for details of outlets, designers and suppliers. For cruelty-free cosmetics, Bahrain has its own local brands — Organicare and Green Bar — and you can find a comprehensive list of cosmetic and household products which are not tested on animals at peta.org (but watch out for parent companies which may have different policies). And for those who want to implement the lifestyle in their homes, Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) also has a list of ethical décor options.

Awwww UK beef farmer Jay Wilde sent his herd to a sanctuary when he turned vegetarian and couldn’t bear to see them killed.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE VEGAN – BUT IT HELPS!

Louise O’Loan is the founder of the Facebook group Vegan and Vegan Curious in Bahrain, which has more than 700 members. Vegetarian since the age of 17, she progressed to a vegan diet many years ago. She shares her tips for a great vegan dining experience and recommends some of her favourite spots.

G

oing out to eat? You may like to consider this – give notice. If you know you’re going to a restaurant give them a call – this lets the chef know ahead of time that you are coming, so if they want to prepare something special, they have the time to do so. Didn’t call ahead? When you walk into the restaurant put on a friendly smile and courteous manner then ask the staff if they have a vegan option or are able to alter the menu items to become vegan. Not everyone understands what vegan is, so if they don’t know, help them out by politely telling them what you don’t eat. Most folks are curious about veganism – I’ve had many a chat with a server who genuinely wanted to know more. This not only helps them get your meal right but also gives them a greater understanding of how to serve the next vegan customer. There are many fine places to eat vegan in Bahrain. Here’s a small sample of some of the places I and my friends frequent.

AVOIDING HAT HAIR

Celebrity hair guru, Asgar Saboo, gives his expert take on avoiding the dreaded kinky frizz that comes with hat hair, with a rundown on how to style a range of different hair types this summer. As the scorching summer heat arrives, along follows the hat season. Whether it be devout racegoers enjoying a day at the races, wedding guests revelling in the sunshine or a summer soirée

STRAIGHT HAIR – A look favoured by many, the straight style is a simple yet effective way to exhibit your luscious locks under a vibrant hat. Admittedly those with straight hair have it the easiest, as they already have the ideal texture. Using a comb, centre part your hair and remove any kinks with straighteners. Simply wear down or create a low pony tail using a mixed bristle cushion brush. Finally, apply a smoothing anti-fizz product to wet hair before styling to eliminate any frizz.

with friends, the vast array of millinery on show is always rife in the summer months. However, avoiding hat hair is also top of the agenda when it comes to planning your look for events.

THE LOW BUN – This is one of my favourite looks, allowing you to make a statement while simultaneously oozing elegance and sophistication. Every year I look out for this style at various events, and every year it doesn’t disappoint. Create a zigzag part from the front of your hairline that extends to the middle of your scalp, using a rat-tail comb. This is best on unwashed hair. Apply a mattifying gel to slick, then comb hair back into a tight low ponytail for a sleek summer ‘do’. To achieve the bun, simply twist the strands and secure with grips.

CURLY HAIR – Embrace your natural curls this summer by using Frizz Ease styling foam to create natural movement to the hair. Upon removing your hat, run your fingers through your locks, lifting the hair from the root. Alternatively, texturising spray is also a good tool to help maintain volume.

ABOUT ASGAR SABOO

SHOULDER-LENGTH HAIR – For this length hair, I would recommend a traditional blow dry. Or to add some flow and movement, opt for straighteners to create a flat wave. This can be done by clamping sections of the hair and creating the letter ‘S’. For added texture, a little salt spray goes a long way.

32

July 2017

A renowned figure among celebrities and a regular on red carpets, the name Asgar Saboo is synonymous with headlinegrabbing, style-worthy hair. He is trusted by supermodels Cindy Crawford and Twiggy, Hollywood actress Eva Longoria, as well as A-list stars including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and legend Rekha. He is known for cutting-edge and sophisticated hairstyles and his creations have been showcased at glittering premieres, showbiz events and multiple awards ceremonies. The UK-based stylist is also famed for the headlinegrabbing hairstyle he created for Bollywood heart-throb Hrithik Roshan, which has been the inspiration for the star’s waxwork figure at London’s prestigious Madame Tussauds. www.womanthismonth.com

showcase DESSANGE PARIS

NINETY MINUTES OF BLISS Wake up your complexion and achieve a lifting effect with a rejuvenating facial that will leave your skin feeling ever so pampered, writes Apple Sharma

I

t was a hot afternoon as I headed to Dessange Paris Bahrain to try out its popular Dessange Dess’Lift 3D facial. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the treatment apart from a welcome respite from the heat and, of course, 90 minutes of pure pleasure. I made my way to the spa and was greeted by the friendly spa manager, Joie Shiela, who introduced me to the lovely Nan, the senior therapist who would be looking after me. She escorted me to the treatment room and explained in detail what the procedure entails. Dess’Lift is an energy-based treatment using natural ingredients, which are conducted into the deeper layers of the skin, for an immediate glow and visible lift effect. The benefits are that it gives triple action care – plumping, firming and lifting. Nan started by removing my make-up with a biphasic (part water-, part oil-based) cleanser. She then used Perle De Beauté Velvet Cleansing Milk to keep the skin supple and preserve moisture, followed by Perle De Beauté Radiance-Revealing Toner that purifies and refines the skin texture, preventing www.womanthismonth.com

blemishes. Next, she applied Instant De Beauté exfoliating mask with enzymatic action, massaged in a circular motion with her fingertips until the texture liquefied. After wiping my face with a warm towel and spraying it with Dessange Floral water to lock in moisture, it was time for the Dess’Lift machine. This procedure involves two phases – detoxifying and tonification. Forget the science behind it and imagine you’re getting a good scrub with two round sponges moving in circular motion to take away all the impurities from your skin. To do this, Nan used a detoxificant fluid and Perle De Beauté gentle toner with cotton extract. While some people get a feeling similar to static electricity, I felt nothing more than a slight tingling sensation. With the machine in ‘Tonification’ mode Nan applied Vegetable Royal Jelly – a moisturising gel with essential oil of rosemary, mint and aloe vera – that serves as a travel medium for the current. She soaked the sponges in the tonificant fluid and glided it over my face and neck at various current settings. The

sweet smell of royal jelly accompanied by the coolness of the gel gave a very comforting feeling. Next was a face lymphatic massage and then came the part of the facial I enjoyed most – mask application. Nan used a thick layer of Dess’Lift 3D lifting cream on my face and neck. She then put a collagen mask – set with cotton soaked in mineral water – and immediately applied another mask which gently heats on top. What transpired during the next 10 minutes is a bit of a blur as I drifted in and out of sleep, with Nan giving me a shoulder and head massage. Next thing I knew, she was removing the mask and finishing off with Dess‘Lift 3D Cream and Révélation Jeunesse anti-aging eye and lip cream. When I looked in the mirror, I was visibly glowing and my skin looked and felt amazing – the results were almost immediate. And the best part was that my skin looked even better after a few hours. More than a facial – it’s a gift that keeps on giving! Call 17 713-999. July 2017

GOING FOR CHROME

Having chrome nails is one of the coolest polish trends at the moment. And if you're not already obsessed with it, you're about to be!

S

uper metallic and foiled-finish nail varnishes have always been pretty droolworthy. But this chromed-out manicure takes that mirrored, high-shine finish to the next level. Of course, achieving it is not as simple or as quick as a typical, metallic mani. There are quite a few steps, and a lot of curing that needs to happen for chrome nails to look their best. While you could totally still achieve the look with the right tools, if you don't have all of the ingredients, aren't much of a do-it-yourself type or simply don't fancy having to clean up a lot of sparkly powder, you're probably better off visiting Joz Salon & Spa, where the nail technician can buff up your nails for you. You will need the base colour of your choice, a gel top coat, a nail lamp, loose chrome powder and a sponge-tip applicator. The coolest part about this manicure is that the chrome is rubbed onto your nails — it's not actually a polish. While silver over black is the classic chrome manicure, there are tons of variations on this look. It all depends on your base and powder colour. Take a look at some of these options

that will convince you never to have unmirrored tips again. This crazy mirror powder is ‘rubbed’ onto cured gel polish and sealed with a topcoat to create nails you can literally check your reflection in. Although silver seems to be the most popular

shade, chrome nails come in every colour of the rainbow, from the super-shiny Barbie pink and the rosy coral hues, to the delightful 24K foil nails. And while this type of manicure is usually done on acrylics, natural nails are by no means excluded from the ‘Terminator 2’ look. For those obsessed with everything shiny, these mirror-like tips speak on a visceral level, and you can't get enough of watching the nail artists apply the powder. Les Parfums Grands Crus Parfait de Rôses and Rôses Berberanza Created in 2016, the Maison Lancôme collection is a tribute to the haute parfumerie savoir-faire from which the brand with the rose first grew. In 2017 this rose, which has been the iconic symbol of the Lancôme brand for over 80 years, finds itself at the heart of two completely new creations: Parfait de Rôses and Rôses Berberanza. Thoroughly modern, each offers a unique interpretation of this flower. We are invited to float away to the fresh rose fields of Grasse, on the syrupy note of sensuous Parfait de Rôses; or bathe in the heady opulence of damask roses, with honeyed and spiced Rôses Berberanza. Each has been created by a different master perfumer to give distinct aromas to the iconic rose. And they come in beautiful, highly collectible bottles – themselves works of glass art. Available at leading retailers.

Eternity Intense Calvin Klein for women The variations on this iconic scent are seemingly eternal. This latest edition builds on the exhilarating feeling of the original with an energetic burst of aquatic floral notes. A base of vanilla crystals is irresistible and utterly addictive. Lending intensity is a sensual orris heart, which deepens the sense of femininity and elegance while ensuring the overall impression is one of deep desire and lasting passion. Top notes come from aquaflora, bergamot and living orris, mid notes are orris concrete, osmanthus and liquid rose and the drydown features sandalwood, musk and benzoin for a fragrance that’s fresh, floral and exhilarating. The colours of the three scents in his new fragrance line are carefully considered. The initial fragrance, NARCISO eau de parfum, is a warm stone-white, inspired by a stone found on a visit to Aphrodite’s birthplace. This particular ‘white’ doesn’t just capture an aesthetic purity; it alludes to the mythical romance of the fragrance. The blush colour of NARCISO eau de parfum poudree signifies extreme seduction while black, the colour of NARCISO eau de toilette, implies mystery. Ugly Beauty Behnaz Sanjana asks: what gives your lipstick its colour? What makes that shampoo lather? How do our magic lotions and potions ultimately hurt us and our planet?

T

he skin is the largest organ of the human body and readily absorbs a significant percentage of everything you slather on it. It protects the internal organs and tissues as the body’s first barrier against the harmful elements of the external world – such as bacteria, moisture, heat, cold and toxic substances. But the mammoth beauty industry that has permanently made its place on our bathroom shelves, dressing tables and in our mentality, may be wreaking havoc with our physiological systems, thanks to some questionable ingredients harboured in attractive tubs and tubes. Just grab the store-bought personal care product closest to you – your shampoo, face wash, moisturiser or even the hand cream in your purse – and read the ingredients that your skin is absorbing every day. According to the Huffington Post, if you see the following, the alarm bells should start ringing: SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) is responsible for the suds in your shampoo and soaps, and also hides in mascara and acne topicals. Besides being a skin, lung and eye irritant, SLS combines with other chemicals to form carcinogens that can also cause kidney and respiratory damage.

PARABENS have oestrogen-mimicking properties that are associated with increased risk of breast cancer. They have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumours and lurk in conventionally available make-up, body washes, deodorants, shampoos and facial cleansers, besides food and pharmaceutical products. SYNTHETIC COLOURS are derived from petroleum or coal tar sources and are suspected to be a human carcinogen, a skin irritant and are linked to ADHD in children. The EU has banned their use.

PHTHALATES are used to increase the flexibility and softness of plastics. They go by the names dibutyl phthalate in nail polish, diethyl phthalate in perfumes and lotions, and dimethyl phthalate in hair spray. They are known to be endocrine disruptors and have been linked to increased risk of breast cancer, early breast development in girls and reproductive birth defects in males and females. Scary Fact: Labels on products can be incomplete and misleading. Manufacturers of beauty products don’t have to list all ingredients, thanks to loopholes in regulatory laws.

According begoodorganics.com, the average woman uses 12 products in a day, which amount to 168 ingredients, or around two kilograms of chemicals over a year. Many of them are untested, or, worse still, tested on innocent animals, and have been scientifically proven to cause autoimmune diseases, thyroid function disruption, respiratory issues, skin disease, liver, brain and immune system damage, development problems, male and female reproductive hormone dysfunction and foetal development issues. It’s not just about humans. Other chemicals found regularly in skin care products are toluene, which can cause foetal developmental damage; propylene glycol and triclosan, both skin irritants; and artificial fragrances. approximately 100,000-200,000 animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice) suffer and die for cosmetics every year around the world. Other animal welfare groups put the figure much higher than that. The website http://www.hsi.org/ states that, typically, animal tests for cosmetics include skin and eye irritation tests, where chemicals are rubbed onto the shaved skin or dripped into the eyes of laboratory animals. These tests, including repeated oral force-feeding studies that last for weeks or months, can cause the animals considerable pain and distress, including blindness, swollen eyes, sore bleeding skin, internal bleeding and organ damage, birth defects, convulsions and death. But don’t despair yet. There are ways to ensure that what you put on to your skin is wholesome and cruelty-free. One

option is to patronise brands that do not test on animals – Bath&Body Works, The Body Shop, Aveda, Lush, Paul Mitchell, dermalogica, NYX and Urban Decay are a few that are available in Bahrain (though you may wish to check the policy of their parent companies). Made right in Bahrain, OrganiCare, offers all-natural, vegan and organic personal care and beauty products with a clear ‘no nasties’ policy. But if you really want to go the whole mile, it’s not very difficult to make your own basic personal products. That way you know exactly what’s in them. July 2017

ENERGISING ESCAPE

An afternoon spent at one of the island’s most luxurious spas, and the Middle East’s only Thalassa, is a treat every girl should try now and then.

A

rriving at this citadel-like property, I was met by therapist Gloria who would be with me throughout my Thalassa Escape. She explained that my package would be in four parts, all using the seawater and sea minerals for which the spa is known. As the only Thalassa facility in the region, Sofitel is justly proud of its unique offering and has come up with innovative ways to use this precious natural resource. I started off with the Affusion Scrub, lying under a saltwater shower rack while Gloria applied rough sea salt to my skin to help release toxins. The horizontal shower, which sends jets along the whole body as you lie supine, is an incredibly relaxing experience. Next came the seawater hydromassage – immersion in a giant tub with 300 jets whooshing at pressure points to get the circulation going. When you’re suffering from a bad back, there is one word for this:

Shirley, Ali, Mohammed & Mary Yateem

BLISS! Gloria kept checking to make sure I wasn’t overheating or dizzy but I could, quite honestly, have stayed in the bath all day – or at least until I turned into a prune. What followed was the Marine Body Rub. Slathered liberally in a gel containing sea minerals and algae to remineralise my skin, I was wrapped in foil and an electric heating blanket and left to relax for 20 minutes. I must admit, I’m not a huge fan of heat treatments but it was worth it as my skin did come out feeling incredibly soft and clean. My indulgent afternoon finished with a Swedish massage which left me ready to face the rest of the working week with vigour. If you’re looking to pamper yourself, I’d highly recommend the Thalassa Escape for two hours of sheer indulgence. Call: 17 636-363.

showcase BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

THE TOOTH OF THE MATTER Dr Akanksha Ostwal, periodontist-general dentist, explains periodontal disease.

P

eriodontitis, a severe form of periodontal disease which involves inflammation of the gums and other structures that support the teeth, is caused by bacteria found in dental plaque which develops just below the gum line causing the attachment of the tooth and its supporting tissues to break down. In trying to eliminate the bacterial infection, our body produces substances that destroy the periodontal ligament and underlying bone, structures that hold the teeth firmly in the jaw. As this process continues, the teeth become loose. Pockets form between the teeth and gums, allowing more bacteria to accumulate. Left untreated, periodontitis can result in tooth loss. People who

Dr Akanksha Ostwal

smoke are four to seven times more likely than nonsmokers to get periodontitis. Warning signs are pain, blood when brushing, spaces between teeth, swollen and tender or receding gums, bad breath, an unpleasant taste and pus between teeth and gums.

Preventive measures include daily brushing and flossing (morning and night) and regular visits for professional cleaning. Periodontists classify the disease as mild, moderate or severe. Mild is usually treated first with a thorough cleaning, called scaling, to remove accumulated plaque or calculus, and root planing which

Layla, Mary, Hilde, Layla, Salwa & Hana

both removes plaque or calculus and smoothes the roots of the teeth, making it more difficult for bacteria to cling to them. Moderate periodontitis may additionally require surgical treatment for reshaping the gums to fit the teeth (resective surgeries) or encouraging lost bone to regrow (regenerative surgeries). Severe periodontitis will likely require surgical intervention and, in some instances, antibiotics. The best course of action is to get regular dental checkups. If you have persistent bleeding or swelling of your gums or notice loose teeth, call your dentist/ Periodontist for help. Call 17812000 or email akanksha.ostwal@bsh.com.bh

HEALTHY MEALS IN A HURRY

A delicious meal is always appreciated but it often takes a lot of time an effort to prepare. Luckily, this must-have kitchen appliance takes the stress out of the process.

I

f you are looking for a reliable kitchen partner to help you whip up healthy meals in a hurry, you may consider using the new Moulinex Double Force range of food processors. These machines take the time and effort out of common kitchen tasks, such as chopping, cutting, slicing, pureeing, kneading, grinding, grating and shredding. The Double Force range includes the FP828H, FP826H and FP824H, all of which make light work of any task with results limited only by the user’s imagination. In a world first, these devices have speed and motor exits, which provide optimal force and speed – depending on the accessory being used. The FP828H has 31 functions and comes with 10 accessories including a stainless steel bowl. It has a unique digital control panel with seven preset programmes and a powerful 1,200W motor. The FP826H boasts the same accessories and functions but includes a clear plastic bowl and a 1,000W motor. The

FP824H has a mechanical control panel with six-speed settings. Unlike blenders, food processors use interchangeable disks and blades, which can be used for different purposes. For example, the blades used for chopping are different from the ones used for mixing or shredding. If you don’t use a food processor, the chances are you’re spending a lot of unnecessary time in the kitchen. Any busy parent or professional knows that when you are in a hurry, every minute counts. So, why waste effort chopping and mixing ingredients manually when the Moulinex Double Force range can do it for you in a fraction of the time? Moulinex Double Force and other food processors are distributed by International Agencies Co. Ltd. (Intercol).

imfa August is a passionate cook who has lived in Bahrain for many years, having first arrived on the island in the 1980s and coming back again to stay in 2016. Inspired by her mother, from the age of just nine years she would stand on a chair to watch her cook. During her time in the Kingdom during the 1980s she broadened her culinary repertoire in response to the limited restaurant offering at the time. With a wide social circle, she often created dishes for coffee mornings and evening gatherings, then, one day, a friend asked if she was taking orders and a small business was born. Having previously run one of her family’s own restaurants and later also a friend’s eatery, she was well able to offer a good variety of dishes. She says: “Everything I know is self-taught. I have no professional qualifications. I have travelled and lived in several countries such as Hong Kong, Melbourne, Paris and London – this has played, and still plays, an important part in my cooking. When dining out, I always order food that I do not normally cook at home. Trend is a tenuous word. I call it a ‘twist’ to give food an appealing touch and a ‘kick’, for lack of a better word. Recipes are only a road map.” Her favourite style of cooking is French and today she shares a recipe for Tomato Tarte Tatin

saying: “I had a chance to sample this at a restaurant in Australia which, by the way, has some of the best food places I’ve been to. Though I have tried it in other restaurants from other countries, this particular one is, by far, the best.”

Serving day: • Peel and slice onions (I use the food processor). Fry gently in olive oil until caramelised. Strain and cool. • Line baking pan with double parchment paper. • Arrange tomatoes in tight concentric circles cut side down. Spread onions. Scatter crumbed cheese on top of onions. Roll pastry, place on top and tuck in edges. • Bake in preheated oven at 180°C until pastry is golden brown. • Turn out onto serving plate. • Sprinkle basil all over. I normally serve this with a mixed green salad and a selection of bread. www.womanthismonth.com

Need to Know!

Dr Jinan Harith Darwish is a paediatric allergy specialist and clinical immunology fellow at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center. Each month she answers your health questions.

Q

I will be travelling with my family this summer to Kenya. The recommendation is to have vaccinations for yellow fever as well as hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus/polio/diphtheria but my baby daughter is only six months old and I also have a two year old and I’m very worried about giving them all these shots. In your view, are they really necessary? Also, there is no mention of malaria. How do I keep my family safe?

A

Vaccinating children for travel necessitates vigilant evaluation. Whenever possible, children must complete the routine immunisations of childhood on a normal schedule. However, travel at an earlier age may require accelerated schedules. Not all travel-related vaccines are effective in infants, and some are particularly contraindicated. Yellow fever, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes, is endemic in certain areas of Africa and South America. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is a requisite for entry into some countries. Infants and children aged nine months or older can be vaccinated if they travel to countries within the yellow fever-endemic zone. Infants aged less than nine months are at higher risk for developing encephalitis from yellow fever vaccine, which is a live virus vaccine. Visitors with infants aged less than nine months should be advised against travelling to areas within the yellow fever-endemic zone. ACIP [the US Advisory Committee on Immunisation Practices] recommends that yellow fever vaccine never be given to infants aged less than six months. Infants aged six to eight months should be vaccinated only if they must travel to areas of ongoing epidemic yellow fever and if a high level of protection against mosquito

bites is not possible. More specifically, Kenyan authorities require it if travelling from a country with risk of yellow fever virus transmission and if aged one year or above. It is generally not recommended for travellers whose itinerary is limited to the following areas: the entire North Eastern Province; the states of Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Malindi, and Tanariver in the Coast Province; and the cities of Mombasa and Nairobi. Malaria is present in all areas, including game parks at altitudes below 2,500m and the city of Nairobi. There is resistance to the drug chloroquine. The recommendation is to use chemoprophylaxis for example atovaquone-proguanil or doxycyclineor mefloquine. Kindly note, Zika virus is a risk in Kenya. Because Zika infection in a pregnant woman can cause serious birth defects, women who are pregnant should not travel to Kenya.

Q

I recently cracked several ribs and am wondering if there is anything I can do to help them heal more quickly? I’m mostly OK but first thing in the morning my chest is very painful and it is sometimes hard to take a full breath. I’ve been like this for five weeks now and am getting very fed up.

A

Oh dear, oh dear. I’m so sorry to hear that. Pain like you experienced is the most common symptom that people experience with rib fractures. It will often take upwards of six weeks, sometimes six months, for the fractures to heal and for individuals to become entirely pain free. This pain results mostly from the movement of the broken ends and, subsequently, with each motion or deep breath, the unstable ends move and pain ensues. Pain control is a top priority in the care of rib fractures. Poor pain control renders the patients unable to effectively breathe deeply, placing them at risk for collapse of the air sacs in their lungs — medically termed atelectasis — and at a higher risk for pneumonia. Certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A Balch states in her book, Prescription for Nutritional Healing, that eating half a fresh pineapple daily until your fracture heals may be particularly helpful. You ought to consider avoiding soft drinks. Bone density in women may be reduced by soft drink consumption. The phosphoric acid in a beverage binds to calcium in the gut which keeps the calcium from being absorbed. Other beneficial foods for the purpose of bone healing include foods rich in calcium, such as milk, yogurt, cheese, black beans and spinach. www.womanthismonth.com

Vomit...Can We Talk About It Please!

Chanelmama blogger Ouiam Charkani El Hassani gets personal about the 'V-word'.

I

know. I’ll give you a minute to re-arrange your face, which I am sure is twisted in disgust right now. OK. Let’s talk this through. One of the things that no one tells you about before becoming a parent is how familiar and accustomed you will become to the 'V-word' (aka VOMIT)! From day one, in this chaotic journey called parenthood, you will discover that those little munchkins not only poop all the time (another delightful subject that I’d love to talk about some time), but also vomit almost all the time. At first it is just little pearly drops of milk, with almost no smell (or so you think, till you try leaving it intact for a few hours and you change your mind), then it becomes this ugly, catastrophic event that mostly happens in the middle of the night, on freshly washed sheets, that you’ll have to change, with only one eye open, because let’s face it, all you want to be doing is getting some sleep. Yet the smell doesn’t completely disappear, even after you change those damn sheets; it will stick around to remind you of this unwanted event. So, you will be in the middle of a nice, refreshing dream yet still that smell will find its way to you! And guess what? There is no way out! Then of course let’s not forget about those, by now, extremely stinky sheets and clothes, that are piled up in your bathroom waiting to be burned alive. Because what are the odds of ever getting them clean again after a whole night in a warm, humid bathroom? This normal yet unwelcome visitor doesn’t only stop by at night, it can creep up on you at any time, and sometimes for no specific reason! If your little one cries too much, it will pay you a visit. If he runs too fast, beware. If he eats too much, you are at risk. If he laughs too much

This normal yet unwelcome visitor doesn’t only stop by at night, it can creep up on you at any time, and sometimes for no specific reason! If your little one cries too much, it will pay you a visit. If he runs too fast, beware. AYAYAY! And, of course, the normal and most well-known reason: if he is unwell. In that case forget about it and just surrender! Because the 'V-word' will just put the tent up and declare the premises its own territory, and I could go on for hours about how big the pile in your laundry basket will be and how your nose will get used to that sour yet slightly sweet smell, that will become your constant companion for the next few days! This is not the worst thing about this natural disaster, there is more! Because it can happen at any time, you might have to

walk/drive/meet friends or even go to work, smelling and looking like … well, VOMIT! In the supermarket, while you’re doing your grocery shopping, at a café where you thought you could have a quiet morning with your little one, at a friend’s house [this must be my favourite, because now your face turns red almost instantly, and you start sweating uncontrollably because you are totally embarrassed and have no clue how to tackle the aftermath lol]. It can happen in the car (and freaks the hell out of you, because your little nugget can choke on his own vomit, so you must pull off the road, and tend to a crying, possibly scared and definitely filthy little one!), and the list goes on! If you think this article comes with some magical solution to exterminate this natural yet catastrophic phenomenon, then sorry to disappoint you, we are all pretty much stuck here for the next 18 years [or until they can clean up for themselves, so maybe longer...]. So stock up on ice cream, chocolate and lousy TV, and remember no matter how hard it gets, motherhood is truly a blessing. See more from Ouiam at her blog Chanelmama. www.womanthismonth.com

PARENTING | tech kids

Virtual summer camps may sound like just another excuse for kids to be glued to the computer screen. Fear not, plenty of these interfaces encourage youngsters to create projects, investigate and explore the great outdoors.

Idtech.com

The site offers paid online instruction in coding, game design and graphic design for your techsavvy child. Each camp offers a variety of levels and challenges as well as a dedicated instructor. Kids will have an opportunity to meet other children who are part of robotics clubs, starting companies, founding nonprofits and landing jobs at tech powerhouses like Facebook and Google.

Startwithabook.org

This is a free course and, in addition to a very exciting summer science camp, the site offers a long list of themes, such as art, night sky and weather report, for kids to explore. It’s great for strengthening children's literacy and problem-solving skills. A book suggestion comes with each theme along with discussion guides, handson activities and related sites and apps.

Brainchase.com

This paid online camp runs for six weeks in the summer, offering a creative approach to enrichment. Kids work on maths, reading and typing, all while competing in a real-life treasure hunt for the chance to win a $10,000 scholarship. Electives such as foreign language classes are available for an additional fee. It requires about five hours of work per week but children can go at their own pace.

Khanacademy.org Makezine.com

Weekly camps based on themes such as far out future and flight will engross your child in hours of interactive activities such as creating homemade musical instruments, thinking putty and flying kites in addition to customising and modifying common electronics. Most of the projects require a certain amount of technical skill and a grasp of basic electronics, and are better suited for older teens. A special section highlights a handful of kid-friendly projects.

Star

Gazing Raphael tells us what’s written in the stars this month

horoscopes

Aquarius

Your heart is still pining for someone far beyond your reach but the good news is an opportunity to meet them will come your way in the next month and you can look forward to a wonderful escape, although it will be brief. This does beg the bigger question of where you go from here and whether that prospective journey will ever happen but I guess more instinct and less questions is probably the real order of the day here so go with it.

Pisces

Travel is the main feature of your month as you set off to spend a few weeks with relatives you have been missing. You may also uncover some fascinating information about a brother or sister that both surprises and impresses you. For once, try to be generous with your praise as they will welcome your opinion and support. On the career front you could be in line for a long overdue promotion but think carefully before you commit.

Cancer

Health concerns have been at the top of your list and it’s possible you will need to remain vigilant for the foreseeable future, even if you feel you’re getting better. Chances are that much of what ails you is down to your own indiscretions and you need to mend bad habits. On the financial front, there is the likelihood of a new investment opportunity but only if you are quick.

Leo

You may have everything you need in your life right now but the truth is something is still scratching away at the back of your mind, which lends itself to the idea that an unresolved action from your past will not go away until it has been properly dealt with. Some secrets just won’t stay hidden. It could be that you have to be more honest with yourself but that might be difficult.

Virgo

Work has taken up so much of your time recently that many of you feel you’ve completely lost your identities. The fact is, you’ve taken on more and more responsibilities but this has come at a heavy price to your personal life. Without balance you will eventually slip into chaos so try to return to an even keel. If this seems too difficult to do alone, speak to a partner or loved one or seek professional help.

Libra

You’re not the kind of sign that ever does things by the book. You like to test yourself and sometimes those around you as well! Despite the best advice you have chosen to ignore reason and common sense and continue on with a project that is at complete odds with reality. Don’t do anything just to prove a point. Wake up and steer this ship before it sinks. www.womanthismonth.com

Aries Scorpio

Life is a bed of roses for you right now. You have thrown caution to the wind of late, embraced a more carefree attitude and are now enjoying yourself more than you have for a long time. With this in mind, try to be charitable when approached by a friend looking for assistance. Don’t judge but instead just offer your help where you can. You could be this person’s only hope right now!

Sagittarius

It is a long time coming but true romance will finally enter your life this month after a long period of inactivity and disappointment. Try to keep your cool and play this slowly. Let it build and you will get to experience something wonderful. Above all else, don’t rush it! This looks to be the most credible opportunity for some time and the signs suggest it could be a lot more than a casual affair.

Capricorn

A business venture is moving along with some rapidity now and the next few months will see you reaping rich rewards as you turn hard work into significant profits. Just one word of caution: don’t try to do too much yourself. Trust in your co-workers and distribute the load otherwise you may hurt the good progress you’ve made. To take things to the next level you are going to have to bring in outside assistance.

It’s all about opportunity for your sign in July as a new but exciting challenge presents itself. A face from the past could enter your life and while you feel it might not be the most sensible option, you can’t help being curious about what they’ve been up to. There’s also a affection towards someone who clearly left a mark on your life, but try and stay sensible with your approach.

Taurus

You’ve had a great deal of financial stress to deal with of late and the pressures have had a negative effect on your health. Fortunately, the chances are that you will now be moving away from the worst of it and you can keep out of future difficulties simply by applying a little more thought and planning to your actions. It won’t be long before everything is back to normal and opportunity presents itself in a number of interesting ways.

Gemini

Many of you may have been feeling that you have lost that all important spark – some perhaps as a consequence of a recent separation. However, summer brings with it promise and opportunity and you just need to focus on what you want and then drive yourself to go out and get it. On the career front there is a chance to take a short contract overseas and, while it might initially appear an unlikely option, if you think about it, what have you got to lose by trying. July 2017
