ADAPTING TO CHANGE ON THE FIELD & IN THE CLASSROOM by Jen Wingerter ’13

When B.J. Wilson was voted team captain for the QU Hawks football team by his teammates, he was surprised. For B.J., leadership is quiet, leading by example, and caring for the people around you.

W

hen B.J. is studying in the Student Success Center, he disciplines himself to do his homework and not be on his phone. In the weight room and at practice, B.J. gives his all.

is dark, dirty, and cramped, and I could not find the light to run the wire up there. After struggling for a while, I called Mike, and he crawled up to the attic to help. I thought, ‛He’s the boss. He does not have to do this,’” said B.J.

“My teammates see that. If I’m not studying or would skip a rep, somebody is going to see that and think they can skip a rep or they don’t have to study," said B.J.

Another influencer for B.J. is Coach Gary Bass, and B.J. appreciates the culture he has created within the football program.

Mike McCabe, director of IT, has been an influential leader for B.J. as Mike willingly works alongside his team and student workers to complete necessary projects. “I was working in the attic above the new weight room two summers ago. It

“He is focused and determined that we will be good men when we leave college. That is his main goal. He wants to win football games, but he wants us to be good men too,” said B.J. The thing that makes B.J. stand out most as a leader is his ability to adapt to change.

I honestly was not expecting that. My leadership style isn’t as vocal as others, so I was surprised they chose me. -B.J. Wilson

When he arrived at QU, he wanted to be a tight end but was moved to offensive line left tackle instead. B.J. had to adjust and overcome self-doubt. “I did not think there was a chance I was going to be able to play as a left tackle,” said B.J. “I was 260 lbs. and not very strong.” Despite his doubts, B.J. accepted the change and worked hard to improve. “I’m proud that I have continued to improve my skills as a left tackle,” said B.J. “I decided, if I’m going to do this, I'm going to be good at it.” Initially, B.J. planned on majoring in cybersecurity, but the program was not available until his junior year. He pivoted and decided to double major in criminal justice and computer science and later 4

added a minor in cybersecurity. His mom was influential in helping him make that decision. “She pushed two things from day one while I was in high school–major in a degree that is in high demand and pays well,” said B.J. “She encouraged me to pursue computer science or the law.” B.J. had some concerns. He grew up playing video games and playing on the computer but had little experience with coding. In high school, he feared public speaking, so going into law was intimidating. Undeterred by his uncertainty, B.J. chose both. As he started taking computer science classes, he found he enjoyed them. He overcame his fear of public speaking and participated in the Academic Symposium, something he never expected to do.

Student Spotlight | QU Proudest of: Making the Dean's List his first semester Biggest adjustment to college life: Social life - balancing it with class and practice. Why QU? As a side job and hobby B.J.’s dad bakes cakes. B.J. found a way to use his dad’s red velvet cake recipe to make cake pops and sold them on campus to make some extra money while at school.

I was not always confident I was going to be able to finish, but now here I am, at the end of the line. -B.J. Wilson

“Professor (Husam) Ghazaleh suggested that I and two classmates design a virtual reality football game to present at the Academic Symposium,” said B.J. New to the world of virtual reality programming, they spent time researching the process. After a disappointing discovery that they built the game in the wrong program, the team had to start over. “It was hard and took a lot of perseverance to continue to work on it outside of class because it did not go the way we thought it was going to,” said B.J. Six weeks before the symposium, they finally started making progress, and by the Academic Symposium, the game was ready to play. Through his time at QU, B.J. has set goals but learned the path that gets you there needs to be flexible. Rather than getting stuck on one solution to solve a problem, B.J. adapted.

BJ’s plans to work a couple of years after graduation from QU in the computer science field, then go to law school and study cybersecurity law.

A PANDEMIC YEAR-A LONG HARD LESSON IN GRIT-SHOWED PASSION AND PERSEVERENCE. Signs of spring filled the campus on Saturday, May 8, as the graduating Hawks returned to the Pepsi Arena to celebrate four remarkable years and to launch their new journeys.

T

he 158th Commencement was held in two ceremonies honoring the graduating class of May 2021, which comprised 203 undergraduates and 27 recipients of master’s degrees. Family, friends, faculty, staff, and members of the board of trustees gathered to provide enthusiastic congratulations and heartfelt wishes for future success. As QU President Brian McGee, PhD, noted in his address to the graduates, Pepsi Arena has been the setting for many defining events in the lives of students. “For generations, our Hawks have come together in this building to compete with the best athletes of other universities, but also to gather for academic programs and to enjoy one another’s company,” McGee said. Alumni across the decades know Pepsi Arena as the site of many challenging tests, both athletic and academic. 8

QUniverse | Fall 2021

“To see how far every one of us has come is breathtaking,” said student representative ZACHARY REIDER in his welcome to the afternoon ceremony. “During our journey here at QU, we discovered more about ourselves than we thought imaginable. We grew into the best version of ourselves.” Speaking at the morning ceremony, student representative MADELINE BAUER concurred. “Quincy University will forever be our second home. We planted our roots in a new place, and it has grown into something beautiful throughout our four years,” she said. “It was no walk in the park. We were tested. We battled adversity. We have the good times and the bad to be thankful for because, without them, we would not be the strong, independent individuals we are today.

Main Feature | QU “With a new journey comes many emotions and feelings. However, it is so important to remember that we have made it this far, and these last four years have been a stepping stone for the rest of our lives.” DR. MCGEE highlighted the distinctive accomplishments of this graduating class. “We recognize you as Quincy University’s Class of 2021, the pandemic class, the campus leaders who showed less experienced students the way to overcome adversity, to persevere, and to prevail in the face of obstacles. “Seeking a degree at any university is a test of commitment, an endurance trial, an evaluation of just how hard you are willing to work and to sacrifice to get to this moment. Every generation of Quincy University graduates has passed these tests, but your test was different. Your test was harder. And, nevertheless, you persisted.” Dr. McGee reflected on the combination of persistence, hard work, and vision,

popularly referred to as grit. “To have grit is to be passionate about achieving a goal and willing to put in the hard work required to accomplish that goal. The person with grit also is likely to be resilient, in the sense that she or he will bounce back and learn from failure. “Your university career, but, especially, this last pandemic year, has been a long, hard lesson in grit. And you have learned that lesson, and by your passion and perseverance, you have prevailed. “As Chapter 5 in the Book of Romans tells us, we might ‘even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint.’ “May God bless you in your lifelong journey, Hawks,” McGee concluded. “Go do great things, in the humble examples of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Clare of Assisi. May you always and forever rely on the grit you have learned, the grit you have shown while at Quincy University.”

YOUR UNIVERSITY CAREER, BUT, ESPECIALLY, THIS LAST PANDEMIC YEAR, HAS BEEN A LONG, HARD LESSON IN GRIT. AND YOU HAVE LEARNED THAT LESSON, AND BY YOUR PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE, YOU HAVE PREVAILED. -DR. MCGEE www.quincy.edu

NEW LEADER AT THE HELM by Brendan Saak ’18 THE HUNT BEGAN...

in December 2020, when long-time athletic director, Marty Bell, stepped down from his position. The university conducted a nationwide search for the next candidate to replace him, but QU President, Dr. Brian McGee, did not need to look very far. On February 5, the university introduced former QU baseball alum and head coach JOSH RABE ’01 as the fifth full-time athletic director of Quincy University in the last 45 years. Rabe has spent the past eleven years as the Hawks’ head baseball coach, where he set new program records for all-time wins and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Saint Joseph's College, where he served two years as the baseball program's recruiting coordinator and hitting coach. In 2010, Rabe came back home as the eleventh head baseball coach in QU baseball history. In his first season with the Hawks, Rabe led the 2011 squad to the program's second-ever GLVC Championship title, finishing with a 35-20 overall record. During his eleven-year stint as head coach, Rabe coached 62 all-conference players, 27 all-region performers, eight All-Americans, and five Major League Baseball draft picks. He compiled 348 wins to 205 losses for a final winning percentage of .629. His team went to seven NCAA Regionals including, six straight to end his career, the 2017 Division II College World Series, and led the Hawks to three GLVC Championships.

Following his junior season, Rabe was drafted in the 11th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Minnesota Twins. He reached the major leagues in July of 2006, where he hit .286 and helped the team to an American League Central Division Title. Rabe was named an All-Star at each of his minor league stops and was named the Twins Man of Steel in 2004 for leading the organization's minor league affiliates in stolen bases.

Quincy University and Quincy University Athletics are a great source of pride for me personally and professionally. This place has given me opportunities to grow as a student-athlete and as a professional. I look forward to serving this great institution and community in this new role.

Before becoming QU baseball’s winningest coach, the local product from Mendon, Illinois, was a member of the Hawk baseball program from 1998-2000. While playing for QU, he was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in 1998 and the GLVC Player of the Year in 1999, while being named First Team All-Conference all three seasons. He also helped the Hawks to the 2000 GLVC Tournament title.

Hawk Talk | QU

QU and all other colleges across the country are coming off an academic year unlike any other after completing the 2020-21 fall and spring semesters during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the many challenges, many of Quincy University’s athletic teams still found ways to gain success amidst the obstacles and uncertainties. Six Hawk programs made it to postseason play, four student-athletes earned All-American honors, and 26 earned all-conference recognition by the GLVC this year. Not only did the Hawks show strides on the field, but the cumulative GPA for student-athletes participating in an NCAA sport was 3.20 over the 2020-21 school year. Despite these challenges and obstacles, Rabe will be inheriting an athletic department that is on the rise in many of its 21-sponsored sports, along with its student-athletes showing they can get it done academically as well. Academic strength is something Rabe will continue to build upon next year and into the future.

These are exciting times for Quincy University and Quincy University Athletics. We are a department on the rise. Our teams will continue to strive for excellence, on and off the field. We are going to compete for championships. Our student-athletes are going to make this community proud. —Josh Rabe

What we have learned along the way….

1 2 3 4 5

Revenue solves a lot of problems. Learn how to make money - it's okay. Serve others–you can make a living and serve others. Pick your mentors to be someone older than you who has life experience so they can help you. Pick your friends carefully, the right kinds of friends will help you soar. Last but most important. Build a personal relationship with God.

“It is amazing to me how I chose Quincy and how it was recommended to me when I look back at that time,” said Kevin. “I truly believe the Holy Spirit worked through that decision which led me to Sue and my successful career. It all centers around leading me to Quincy.” Kevin originally planned to follow his brother to Mizzou, but then the principal of his high school suggested he check out Quincy College. With his family’s blessing and after a wonderful visit, Kevin chose to attend Quincy College. Sue did not decide to attend college until June after her high school graduation. “Having grown up in a small town and going through a Catholic education, Quincy was just ideal to me,” said Sue. “ All I knew and felt comfortable with was a Catholic setting. It was part of our way of life.”

Our religious foundation got us where we are today and made a big impact in our lives. The influence of QU's Franciscan values and great teachers like Dr. Magliari, Dr. Natalini, and the SchleppenbacHs helped us become good young adults. It was in our hands after that. Kevin and Sue did not cross paths until the end of her sophomore year and his junior year. Kevin ran The Club, the campus bar and restaurant. He hired Sue - then asked her on a date.

16

QUniverse | Fall 2021

then Kevin reminisced, “Our first date was a motorcycle ride down Front street and it's history from there.” Through Quincy College, Kevin met Jim Hubbard ’57, a successful alumnus from Quincy University, who was looking for some succession in his company. “The career assistance office sent my résumé to Jim,” recalls Kevin. “I didn't even know where Decatur, Illinois was until I met with Jim. Now here we are 43 years later, still in Decatur. “You know Jim treated me like an honorary son. When he hired me, he was looking to move to Montana to open an outfitters ranch, which is now Hubbard Yellowstone Lodge. It was all a dream back then.”

Kevin and Sue have been married for 41 years. Together they have three children, Megan, Michael, and Molly, and five grandchildren.

We truly know we have been given our life together for a reason. Our faith has grown so much. As we are older adults and parents and grandparents, we have had such a beautiful faith journey. Looking back, you can see how the Holy Spirit was influencing our lives.

now

Kevin and Sue pictured with their oldest daughter Megan, who is a 2006 QU graduate with a degree in communications.

Kevin started working for J.L Hubbard Insurance in 1978. Just a few years later, he was promoted to president and owned the company by 1992. In 2002, he sold the company but continued to run it for the next 17 years. He is blessed to work alongside his son and two sons-in-law who also work for the company, now First Mid Bank and Insurance. While Kevin was hard at work leading a company, Sue was hard at work at home. “Kevin was a very busy working person, and it was important for me to be home,” says Sue. “We had to balance it. I always wanted to be a mother, and I was so fortunate that I was able to stay home. It was a blessing.”

Kevin first came to that realization at 34 while attending a White House Retreat hosted by the Jesuits. “I was at the retreat, and I came to the realization that the Holy Spirit exists every day in our lives, and my personal relationship with God changed to where I was a different person in my commitment to my faith,” said Kevin. Kevin and Sue have faithfully served their community and volunteer their time to share their faith and extend a helping hand. They are both quick to say that they are not perfect; they do the best they can and rely on God. “The beauty of our faith, all the mistakes we have made, God forgives and continues to help you and allows you to work for him. He does not abandon you when you screw up,” said Kevin. “It is amazing, and I feel like we are not through yet,” said Sue. “We are getting older, but I’m not old yet, and I feel like there is more for us to do. We are very aware of His presence in our lives and open to what God has for us to do. I believe we are here to do His work and that we will continue to do it as long as He allows us to do it.” www.quincy.edu

THE MINISTRY THAT BUILT HIM by Megan Duncan ’14

F

ATHER JAMES WHEELER, OFM has given many blessings, and he’s also been a blessing to many.

He wasn’t aware of just how many people he’d touched until January 9, 2021, when they celebrated the 55th anniversary of his ordination as a priest at St. Francis Solanus Parish in Quincy. He was overwhelmed by the familiar faces in the congregation. “I was so emotional I couldn’t even talk. The church was filled with people from all the different places I have been a priest, and they spoke about how I influenced them.” Although he did not start out a Franciscan, Fr. Wheeler has early roots in the faith. Growing up in St. Patrick, Missouri, with his parents, the late Leonard and Josephine Wheeler, he attended a public school taught by Franciscan sisters. It was after meeting the friars from Quincy University (then Quincy College) that eventually piqued his interest in the Franciscan way of life. “The Franciscans at Quincy College always helped out in St. Patrick on the weekend masses while the pastor was over in Ireland. I was impressed with them, so I got to know them, and that’s what drew me to the Franciscans.”

18

QUniverse | Fall 2021

However, he did not immediately attend seminary. He first received a B.S. degree majoring in Political Science from St. Louis University before studying philosophy at Our Lady of Angels Seminary in Cleveland, Ohio, and receiving a B.A. degree in Philosophy in 1962 from Quincy College. After Fr. Wheeler served for two years in the Illinois National Guard, he decided to attend seminary and was ordained to the priesthood at St. Francis Church in Teutopolis, Ill., on January 9, 1966. His path of ministry continues today. According to Fr Wheeler, the ministry has built him and made him the person he is. Still presiding over masses, funerals, weddings, and many Cursillos at the Franciscan Retreat Center, even after his semi-retirement in 2012, he will be working in the mission field for as long as God continues to use him. He also serves as President of the Quincy University Retirees Association and Chaplain for the Quincy University National Alumni Board. “I’ve always said, the friends I’ve made in the last 55 years of priesthood have made me who I am, and I treasure that because it brings me to God and God to me. From working with teenagers, college students, and parishioners, we learn from the people we serve. They are God’s gift to us.”

Liberal Arts Education Prepares QU Graduates for Their Careers

QU | Academic Feature

Corey Broeckling ’98 believes his liberal arts education from QU prepared him for his research career. “There is a tendency, I think, to assume that the knowledge needed at the undergraduate level is hyper-specialized and applied,” said Broeckling. Learning to write code, grow microbe cultures, collect samples, record, analyze, and interpret data are essential proficiencies students need to develop for their overall knowledge of their area of study. But equally important is a student's ability to perceive, interpret, and think critically about the world in which they live. “Those general habits of mind enable students to develop wisdom, using the skills and information related to a specific field, whether it's STEM, business, education, or any other discipline,” Barb Schleppenbach, Title III project director, says. “I guess you could say that the liberal arts are the transformation engine for turning knowledge into wisdom.”

22

QUniverse | Fall 2021

There is a misconception that a student must choose to study either liberal arts or STEM to prepare for gainful employment. With the Title III Grant–Expanding Student Access to STEM, QU has enabled students to combine preparation for in-demand careers in STEM fields, with the problemposing method of learning found in liberal education. With the blend of liberal arts and science, QU creates a rich academic landscape. QU’s educational experience prepares students to enter the workforce with critical thinking skills, creativity, and the ability to communicate, adjust, and work with others. Students studying in the STEM fields are subject to complete the Bonaventure program of general education based upon the concepts of a liberal education.

“Having a broader knowledge base and perspective provided by a liberal arts education allows students to approach things from different angles.” —Kimberly Hale, PhD, chair of the division of science and technology

Academic Feature | QU Broeckling applies much of what he learned in his elective classes to his work every day. “The one class that I think has had the most impact was a philosophy course on logic,” said Broeckling. “Logic is the formalization of if-then learning, which is precisely what scientific reasoning and experimentation are built upon. Carrie Hert ’22, computer science major, has explored her passion for the arts and computer science at QU. “I think the main benefit I've gained from attending a liberal arts college is that I have always been encouraged to participate in other classes outside my major,” said Hert. “It has allowed me to take classes in the arts, which I have enjoyed.” Hert had pieces selected for the student art show and was a presenter at the Academic Symposium this past spring. The Academic Symposium, now in its fourth year, is another way QU is preparing students for the workforce.

“I think the main benefit I've gained from attending a liberal arts college is that I have always been encouraged to participate in other classes outside my major.” —Carrie Hert ’22

“For so much of their education, we reward the learning of accepted answers, and that's an understandable emphasis. But we inadvertently create fear of making mistakes, and without mistakes, no one discovers anything new.” —Barbara Schleppenbach, PhD ’71, Title III project director

“When students engage in undergraduate research, they investigate real problems without knowing where the investigation will lead,” said Teresa I. Reed, PhD, vice president of academic affairs. “Their ability to ask good questions and follow the data should be valued by employers.” QU's membership in the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) was one of Dr. Reed's first actions on coming to QU, and she worked for several years to launch the Academic Symposium. “CUR offers multiple resources to support undergraduate research, including online forums, a newsletter and magazine, and a national conference,” said Dr. Reed. “QU faculty and students can learn from what people at other institutions are doing.”

In April, 26 undergraduate students, with the support of eight mentors, shared their original research within their academic programs. “Presenting at the Academic Symposium teaches students how to do a professional presentation,” said Hale “The ability to work independently, teach others, and present your findings are all things that are important in the workplace and graduate school.” So is learning to risk failure. “Helping our students to ask questions and to risk failure is the point of nudging them into research,” said Schleppenbach. “I hope that we increasingly model that approach to learning and create environments in which questions are valued as much as answers.” www.quincy.edu

MORE THAN

NUMBERS by Megan Duncan ’14

HANK TAJKOWSKI,

CPA, CLU, CHFC

Tajkowski believes accounting isn’t just about numbers. “It’s communicating and being able to collaborate and solve problems. It’s not like you’re just sitting at a desk wearing a green visor.” After graduating in 1992, Tajkowski spent four years in St. Louis at Ernst & Young, one of the largest professional networks in the world. He then moved to Chicago in 1996, opening a firm with a former QU classmate as a CPA doing taxes and accounting. Then he transitioned. Using his accounting background as a foundation to help people and businesses plan for the future, Tajkowski became a legacy builder. For the last 20 years, he has focused on family estates and putting people in the driver’s seat for their investments and retirement. “I am looking outside my office on a busy street in Chicago, and people are walking fifteen feet away from me right now. Every single family, every single business, and every single person I see - no matter what age - I know I can help them because of my experience and because of what I studied. That is a good feeling.” Tajkowski appreciates the many professors who helped him find a home in the accounting department and the overall experience at QU.

CHARLES WOODS,

CFO, CPA

Chuck Woods started in public accounting at Peat Marwick Mitchell, now known as KPMG. Through his contacts at Quincy University, Woods later moved on to work with a Fortune 500 company holding various controllership positions in different divisions. “I spent the majority of my career (20 plus years) at a variety of CFO positions for public businesses and had a very successful career. All of it started with those stepping stones beginning with QU.” Woods knew early on his major would be business-related and soon realized that accounting would be transferable across many different industries within his career, including not-for-profit, banking, and manufacturing. “I’ve gotten to work for places around the world with a lot of different organizations using the accounting skills I learned at Quincy University. It opened doors to me.” Woods' favorite thing about his career hasn’t been calculating numbers, but learning what he could do with numbers. For Woods, it’s about making people’s lives better. “It’s helping businesses and people be successful and providing for their families. It’s not just about making money but providing jobs and helping the communities that I have been part of.”

TORI WELLMAN,

VICE PR ESIDEN CHIEF F INANCIA T AND AT JO-C L OFFIC ARROL ER L ENER GY, INC

MBA,CPA

For Tori Wellman, accounting is about relationships. “I had Dr. Vicky Eidson for my three years at QU. It has been so nice to have her as a resource and someone to reach out to who is well known in the community. We also have a little Facebook group where she posts accounting-related jobs.” From her time on the basketball court to her time in the classroom, Wellman’s connections at Quincy University have continued to impact her career. After moving and working in the accounting department at a bank in Kirksville, Missouri, Wellman received a phone call from Coach Garber, her previous coach at QU, asking her to return to Quincy University as a graduate assistant. She accepted the position in 2017, and during the two years she was there, Wellman completed her CPA exam and earned her master's degree. She enjoys the versatility of her job. In 2019, Wellman joined Gray Hunter & Stenn, LLC, an accounting firm in Quincy. She worked remotely for a year in Nehalem, Oregon, only miles from the Pacific Ocean. Two months ago, she returned to work in the Quincy office. “I work for a public accounting firm which is different from private accounting, but it’s nice because every day I am doing something different, and it’s not monotonous. I work on both the audit and tax sides, so I’m always learning. The constant changes and new experiences are probably my favorite parts.”

LEADERSHIP IN THE CLASSROOM DANIEL M. STRUDWICK, PhD professor of theology, completed his bachelor's in philosophy from St. Meinrad College, Indiana, earned a Bachelor of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, then completed a master's and a doctorate in theology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Penn. He has been teaching courses in systematic theology at QU for the past 13 years and recently concluded serving two terms as chair of humanities. He continues to serve as director of the Quincy University Honors Program.

Q: HOW DOES THE STUDY OF RELIGION/THEOLOGY HELP DEVELOP LEADERSHIP? A: The Catholic understanding of leadership is profoundly formed by the words and

deeds of Christ. Jesus was very clear, for the Christian, the focus of leadership must be service and not power. He told his Apostles not to follow the examples of those in leadership who lord it over others. Instead, he said, they should recognize how he was there among them as a servant (Luke 22:24-27). I think the notion of servant leadership is markedly strong within the Catholic/Franciscan tradition and has much to offer students and faculty alike.

Q: WHAT VALUES ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU AS A LEADER? A: For me, it is a sincere desire to promote the common good; it is at the core of what

is upheld in Catholic Social Teaching. The Catholic Church has a strong tradition of recognizing and promoting the common good. Unfortunately, the social teaching of the Church, albeit prominent in certain circles, is not well known to many today. I believe a focus upon the common good can provide a vision or goal that can unite diverse parties, at least at the initial level. We may differ on how to achieve the goal, but this initial agreement allows for some level of commonality amidst varied perspectives.

the daunting task of leading the church in Poland while under oppressive communist rule. He had to balance the safety of his people with uncompromising faithfulness to the gospel. I think leadership requires that one be both committed to principles and yet exercise diplomacy. Diplomacy would be an outgrowth of the cardinal virtue of prudence, the virtue which helps us to most effectively achieve the good. John Paul remained faithful to his principles and yet navigated turbulent political waters. He then went on, as Pope, to apply those talents to leading the universal Catholic Church as it implemented the vision of the Second Vatican Council. 26

THIS TIME, LIKE ALL TIMES, IS A VERY GOOD ONE, IF WE BUT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT. —Ralph Waldo Emerson

Q: HOW DOES THE STUDY OF HISTORY HELP US LEARN TO LEAD EFFECTIVELY? A: I try to instill in students an appreciation for the past because history often serves as a window to the present. It is the story of people's lives. It tells you about the way they lived, but it also helps us understand how things work and the significance of what's happening today.

Q: IN YOUR OPINION WHICH PERSON IN HISTORY BEST EXEMPLIFIES LEADERSHIP? A: Picking one person who exemplifies

leadership is a difficult task. Within my research, I tend to look at average citizens like most of us (individuals left out of the historical narrative). These people often demonstrated leadership in their own families and communities that we might overlook. Average citizens helped rebuild the nation after the Civil War and marched for Civil Rights only decades ago. But, if I were to select a person, I would look for someone who, like St. Francis, exemplifies servant leadership. Servant leaders lead by building community, listening, expressing empathy, and demonstrating a willingness to work with others. Most importantly, I believe that a servant leader does not hide his or her humanity, the flaws of his or her character, which makes a person fallible. Abraham Lincoln is a model of leadership. He was not a perfect man or leader. He continues to be the subject of both criticism and praise by historians. Lincoln endeavored to make the best choices for a nation, even when those choices were not easy or challenged his ideologies. His brilliance was his enduring humility, his compassion, and recognizing the weight of his responsibility to the people of the nation.

MICHAEL KELLER, PhD associate professor of English, teaches courses in American literature, rhetoric, and literary theory. His current research focuses on the intersections between race, labor, and poetic form in abolitionist and anti-abolitionist writing. He earned his bachelor's from Wheaton College, his master's from Northern Illinois University, and his doctorate in English at Marquette University.

Q: CAN LEADERSHIP BE TAUGHT THROUGH LITERATURE? A: Among other things, great literature reminds us what it means to be human, how to

empathize with others, how to think critically, how to understand society, and how to see beyond every day, to imagine the impossible. The student of literature will become adept at all of the above and, in doing so, will become the best kind of leader. It is no accident that so many companies are looking to hire English majors.

Q: WHAT VALUES ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU AS A LEADER? A: In my opinion, the greatest leaders are the ones who are constantly learning, adapting, and analyzing their world (and themselves) with a critical eye. Rather than devoting their energy to forcing through a single vision, great leaders help those around them become better people and work collaboratively toward a shared goal.

Q: WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE LEADER? WHY? A: One leader I admire is Ralph Waldo Emerson.

He was not a leader of a business, school, or political party. Rather, he went about learning everything he could and encouraged everyone around him to do he same. Through his life and his writings, he inspired some of the world's greatest minds--from Margaret Fuller to Friedrich Nietzsche--to challenge the status quo and to embrace their own gifts. Regardless of how bleak things seemed, Emerson never failed to believe in humanity's inherent potential for good. What he said in his 1837 “The American Scholar” address is equally true today: “This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it.”

Steve ’78 & Jean (Fruehe) ’79 Green Co-Chairs of the 2020-21 QU Fund Drive

2020-21 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 35

June 2020—May 2021

I

am privileged to thank you for the generosity you have shown to Quincy University this past year. In a year where a pandemic ravaged our world, your support remained constant and allowed us to continue to serve our students in a way very few institutions of higher learning were able. Thanks to you, our total funds raised for the last fiscal year were $5,195,270. A special thanks to QU Fund Chairs Steve ’78 and Jean (Fruehe) ’79 Green for their support and leadership of this successful drive, which brought in $1,027,740, supporting everything from continual technology upgrades to our efforts to combat COVID-19 to student financial support. Endowment gifts accounted for $1,203,500 of the total giving for the year and allowed our endowment at year-end to be the highest it has been in many years. The endowment is critical to any university’s sustainability and provides a reliable source of income for scholarships and academic program enrichments. In addition to these gifts, an additional $969,985 was raised in restricted funds to support academic and athletic programs, student clubs and organizations, and facility improvements. My wife and I are honored to become members of the Quincy and Quincy University communities and hope to meet as many of you as possible in the coming months. Thanks to those of you who have made us feel so welcome. It is, indeed, a great day to be a Hawk!

Get to Know Dr. Robert Wyatt What brought you to QU? I came to QU to be a part of an institution whose values and beliefs are desperately needed in society today and are consistent with mine. I knew of QU from my many years in Missouri and was immediately struck by the beauty of the campus and the sincerity and genuineness of the people here and throughout the Midwest.

How do you think your fundraising experience at Coker College and Drury University can help you successfully lead QU’s advancement team? At both institutions, I learned the importance of building and nurturing relationships that tied individuals to the institution. Believing in and loving an institution is the foundation on which an advancement team stands. The team will intensify its outreach to our 13,000 alumni and friends who, I believe, are ready and eager to be supporters or even greater supporters of Quincy University and its mission.

What do you see as the biggest priorities for the advancement team right now? The advancement team’s biggest priorities are to raise funds to help the university accomplish its strategic objectives and communicate the many emerging needs resulting from the pandemic. Although the university has made much progress and has reestablished its financial strength, we have exciting new initiatives, programs, and student-success endeavors that require resources to launch and sustain them.

Tell us about your family. Dr. Robert Wyatt Vice President for University Advancement

“Growing up, finances were a struggle for my family. I’m so glad to get a scholarship so I can attend college and be one step closer to my goals.” After graduation, Saintfar plans to work as a physical trainer and eventually open a gym of his own. He wants to help young athletes between middle school and high school achieve their dreams, whether it is to play at the high school level or collegiately.

Saintfar believes you do what you can do to help society and do it to the best of your ability.

Their education at Quincy University (College) was a FIRM FOUNDATION for the futures of Tom and Pat (Reibling) Ehlman ’65 and is why the couple has continued to support the university for the past 56 years. “The integration of theology, philosophy, business, and accounting courses served me well for critical thinking and making value-based, educated and informed personal and professional life decisions,” said Tom. “Attending this institution was a LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE for us. We met as 18-year-old freshmen and will celebrate 55 years of marriage this year.” The couple hold many fond memories of their time on campus and recall how faculty like Fr. Melvin Grunloh, OFM, Fr. John Ostdiek, OFM, and Frank Naggi were a POSITIVE INFLUENCE and were always encouraging, accessible, and engaging. The couple also know the university from the teaching and administrative side. Tom taught and worked in the development office for nearly five years. During this time, the couple's RESPECT for the institution grew as they saw first-hand the commitment to serve the best interests of the students in the Franciscan tradition. “We sense this same COMMITMENT and PROFESSIONALISM today in President McGee, Fr. John Doctor, OFM, vice president of mission and ministry, and in others serving on campus,” said Tom and Pat. Tom and Pat have not only SUPPORTED the university financially but have visited frequently over the years for reunions and events, bringing their five children along. Their only daughter Katie is a 1992 Quincy University alumna. Knowing their parents' appreciation for all that QU meant to them, their children surprised them with a SCHOLARSHIP in their names at Quincy University for their 50th wedding anniversary.
