Free Trauma Sensitive Yoga

Most people experience or will experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives. When we live through traumatic experiences, as our community has done, it changes how we interact with the world. Our minds may adapt by reliving the past, disconnecting from our bodies, or becoming hyper alert of what might happen in the future. As adaptations help us survive traumatic experiences, they can make it hard to live in the present and feel like we’re in control of our lives. In this class, participants will be guided by a certified yoga instructor through gentle moving yoga poses that will help you strengthen your body, be mindful of your breath and help build energy. Participants are welcome to participate in a chair or mat (please bring your own) as modifications will be made. AGE

BRANCHING OUT 2023 Year In Review This year the Forestry Division has seen many changes. We have seen the retirement and subsequent replacement of the Forestry Supervisor. We have refilled 3 of 7 of our arborists positions as well as adding a new part time arborist. We have recently promoted an arborist to assistant supervisor and are now looking to fill yet another arborist opening. Through all the change, we continue to work toward creating a safe and sustainable urban forest for the future. The Forestry Division is completing the last of our tree planting for the year and are transitioning to other necessary tasks. One of our goals is to clear the back log of stumps we have throughout the city. We are working with multiple contractors and our own staff to clear the back log of over 400 stumps and counting. To try and get through them more quickly, we will start with simply grinding the stumps. Stump grindings will be removed when the tree is planted in the spring of 2024. If a tree cannot be replaced in the location where there was a stump, we will remove stump grindings and restore the terrace as time and weather allow.

We have also begun working on our train pruning program for 2023/2024 of nearly 2,000 trees. This program focuses on pruning our youngest trees every other year after planting. We do this so that we can help form a healthy and robust street tree. As a tree ages out of the train pruning program, our goal is for it to have a crown that is high enough that it will be out of the way of traffic and have a strong branch architecture to be resistant to storm damage. Dormant season is a great time to prune these trees because it allows us to see the branch structure better than when the leaves are on the trees. This enables us to identify any weak branch attachments, rubbing branches, or damaged limbs that need to be removed. Our hard-working arborists will also have other tasks that keep us busy throughout the year including snow plowing, tree removals, pruning and other service requests. If you see one of the arborists out working, please thank them for their dedication to their profession and for the hard work and talents they display to maintain our urban forest.
