I’m writing this letter early on a Friday morning after completing a 10-minute meditation on my Calm app about building consistency. It’s just one component of my daily wellness practice, along with long evening walks, a plant-based diet and an ongoing edit of our home’s interior to make it more regenerative.

What sparked the idea for Whearley & Co.? Natalie Whearley: I was working with Cliff, doing staging and photography for his real estate listings, and people would ask us, “Where could I get that rug? Where can I get that table?” I spent so much time curating these things, and I loved that other people were interested in them too.

Tell us about the space. Cliff Whearley: It was built in the 1920s, and there’s a 100-yearold brick wall that’s exposed. We were also

attracted by the natural light—we’ve got two big skylights so it’s very bright.

Describe your aesthetic. NW: We’re inspired by the landscapes of Northern California, and we’ve also taken a lot of road trips through the European countryside over the years. We appreciate spaces that are full of natural materials that get better with age and have been curated over time. And I love the mix of old and new pieces. That just brings joy and a bit of nostalgia to a space and makes it special.

What types of items will people find at the store? NW: We’re really focused on handmade, small-batch lines from independent artisans. We have a mix of new and older pieces, so we have some vintage stoneware from France and tables made of solid wood that’ll be around for another hundred years.

How did you become interested in sustainability? When I was living in Shanghai, I started to have some physical problems—headaches, digestive issues, energy, things like that. And it’s known to be a place where there are a lot of environmental toxins that are outside of an individual’s control. I decided to educate myself as to how I could control the toxins I’m exposed to within my apartment. When I launched Elworthy Studio, I wanted to create products that were safe and had minimal impact on Mother Earth. I created a business plan that—from sourcing to production—factored in environmental impact. That means using natural fibers and finding mills that are just as committed to the environment as I am. And everything is printed to order, so there’s minimal waste.

What inspired your new collection? I’ve been going down a physical, mental and emotional healing path, which led me to multicultural shamanism. One of the practices is the shamanic journey, which usually involves the steady beat of a drum to put a person into a trance-like state. In these journeys, I noticed that I would get so much visual input—colors, shapes and scenes. I set an intention to journey specifically to gather imagery that could be supportive to people in their healing and well-being. The new collection was a result of months of taking journeys and gathering different ideas in my sketchbook.

OPEN HOUSE

Since 2020, de Gournay—maker of breathtaking handpainted wallpaper and fabrics—has been renovating its international showrooms. The brand’s new San Francisco space, located on Sacramento Street, has now opened its doors. The showroom is a celebration of California design with prominent installations such as Botanical Studies, a composition of large-scale illustrations of flora designed in collaboration with interior designer Michael S. Smith, and Redwoods, a woodland panorama created with designer Alison Pickart. Lovers of elegant style will also rejoice in the news that Poliform is opening a 9,000-square-foot showroom in Showplace Square helmed by co-owners Gioi Tran and Vernon Applegate. Offerings include six kitchen systems, a new selection of Day Systems (customizable shelving and storage), and exclusive lighting from two of the world’s most prominent hand-blown glass companies, Lasvit and Bomma. Inspiring living, dining and bedroom vignettes demonstrate the design possibilities. “The main showroom has beautiful, modern coffered ceilings that accentuate the beauty of our pieces,” Tran says. Poliform is currently open by appointment for previews, with a full opening planned for December. Beginning in 2023, the showroom will also host experiential events.

WHO: Nikki Kuwayama, dried flower and foliage artist and founder of Velvet Curation Co. In her previous life as a (fresh) floral designer, she noticed something interesting. Post-event, when the arrangements ultimately dried up, they assumed a new kind of beauty.

WHAT: Eye candy galore—from sculptural palm seed pods to mimosa branches resplendent with bright golden blooms, their beauty frozen in time.

WHY: To add a burst of nature to your home’s interior spaces that will last (nearly) forever. Kuwayama’s aesthetic is simple and natural, and she dries flowers and foliage with air and sunlight—no bleach or chemicals.

IN HER WORDS: “I love lunaria and bracken fern. You don’t have to do anything with lunaria—just put a bunch in a vase to elevate any space. Bracken fern is typical when it’s green, but when it changes into that golden color at the start of fall, I think it’s the most beautiful thing.”

Sandra Jordan Prima Alpaca has launched its first rug collection, joining forces with Brian Erden, founder of custom rug maker Erden. The collaboration was born from the duo’s explorations of the potential of Prima Alpaca, among the world’s rarest natural fibers. “Brian and I traveled to the Andes together to source Prima Alpaca fiber,” Jordan says. “I love talking with Brian and working with him. We have a shared passion for natural fibers and are always learning from each other.” The collection, hand-crafted by Erden’s skilled artisans in Nepal, comprises three styles inspired by Jordan’s rural headquarters in Sonoma Valley and her effortlessly elegant textile designs. “When we are together, we do what we both love to do most,” Erden says, “which is design, create, think and explore.” sandrajordan.com

AS WATER BECOMES INCREASINGLY PRECIOUS, LANDSC APE DESIGNERS OFFER GUIDANCE—AND HOPE—FOR CREATING BEAUTIFUL DROUGHT-TOLERANT GARDENS. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

With decades of experience gardening through droughts, landscape designers across the West Coast have themselves become a precious resource. Their collected insights and ideas offer a path forward that reduces water consumption and aides in the overall improvement of our environment. From big changes to concepts as simple as using native plants, the West’s take on waterwise gardening—the practice of selecting plants that require less irrigation—is a wellspring of inspiration.

Many in the industry agree that a first step is changing our mindset: Waterwise doesn’t mean unattractive landscapes. And outdated language like xeriscaping (a term coined by Denver’s Department of Water in the 1980’s) hasen’t helped win anyone over. Landscape designers today are moving the conversation beyond gravel and cacti and showing just how inviting waterwise gardens can be. “People are getting into it now,” says Charlie Ray of The Green Room Collaborative in Phoenix. “They’re seeing how a dynamic native garden adds to the atmosphere

of their home.” Montecito Landscape’s Lisa Cullen has similarly shifted the dialogue with clients. “Nobody wants to do something because they have to,” explains the California-based organic gardener. “Rather than selling waterwise, we focus on the benefits and how pretty it can be.”

“We’ve overwatered environments for decades because of inappropriate material choices,” continues Ray, who carefully considers which flora and fauna to use for each project and often starts by adding shade trees, which create a micro-climate under their canopy. “Layer shrubs, massed for drifts of color and texture, and then lots of wildflowers—you’ll see the birds and butterflies come right in,” he adds.

For Forestoration’s David Noftsinger there is such joy in seeing blanket flowers grow wild in nearby Glacier National Park, and equally happily in his own garden. “Planting natives helps develop a sense of place and an appreciation for the bounty of your area,” explains Noftsinger, who recommends homeowners familiarize themselves with natives unique to their state. Visiting

local botanical gardens for inspiration can also be helpful. “Become a member, go to workshops, volunteer—they’re a key resource for local communities,” says Ray.

All in all, the approach to gardening and landscaping happening on a local level along the West Coast can be replicated across the country. And as Noftsinger believes, “the more pieces we put back together, and incorporate what’s supposed to be there, the more change we’ll see— every bit you can do is beneficial.”

Whether you call it wellness architecture or something different, what we’re seeking to do—not just with every project, but with every space—is nurture the soul, optimize people’s lives and elevate the human experience. Architecture is the practice of creating your surroundings and it can influence everything from an inhabitant’s emotions and cognitive performance to relationships and the ways in which we gather and interact. Did you know we spend 90 percent of our time indoors? How we sculpt and model that

interior really impacts every single part of our lives.

Buildings are powerful. There have been neuroscientific studies done where EKGs are performed on people who are then taken into unique buildings like a temple, Grand Central Station or the Salk Institute. Their frontal lobe actually shuts down once inside. This is what happens in meditation, when you enter a non-dualistic or flow state, which is your highest level of being. So people who can tap into this and work from their flow state are often high-performing businesspeople, musicians or creatives— they feel super productive and happy. I try to create spaces that support how people want to operate and are tailored to their

inhabitants in every way because when homes have a proportional or harmonic resonance, you will ultimately feel better.

At the end of the day, humans are a part of nature and if we fight that or try to shut it out, we end up hurting ourselves. I make sure that natural materials and plenty of light are present in every project. Using local resources also creates a sense of culture, belonging and identity which is really important to our existence. Designer Steven Gambrel oversaw the interior and historical restoration of the 1902 structure, devising a total transformation of its rooms, including the former ballroom reimagined as a gym for yoga, meditation and fitness sessions. The light-filled cardio area, complete with a cacti garden, resembles a chic hotel lobby while the locker rooms, conceived by Germany-based design studio Inco Media, are fitted with marble, hand-crafted wood paneling and Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona daybeds. A LUXURIOUS MONTANA RESORT PROVIDES NATURE FOR NURTURE.

It turns out that you can get pretty close to nirvana by taking a mindfulness walk. I’ve recently leaned into the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who encouraged the practice of mindful walking. Yet, to truly deepen the connection, one needs to be in a place where the magical properties of wellness can take hold. For me, that was on a trip to The Green O.

Nestled into a quiet ponderosa pine forest hillside, the resort sits on 37,000 sweeping acres outside of Missoula, Montana, and envelopes visitors like a soft hug. One part luxury ranch and two parts nature immersion for body and soul, the all-inclusive, adults-only property is an exclusive assemblage of 12 design-forward, glass-boxed villas constructed with sustainable principles that dot the land like works of sculptural art. Of all the semi-secluded “haus” designs, my favorite was Tree Haus, which sits on stilts rising 23-feet above ground and features a spiral staircase running through its three-story spine. I enjoyed lavish comforts sheltered inside while simultaneously immersed in the panoramic landscape, glimpsed through towering floor-to-ceiling windows that provided views of wildlife and a hint of warm twinkling lights from Green Hauses beyond.

Among The Green O’s 12 rustic-yet-refined accommodations is Tree Haus, which sits on stilts offering an elevated view of the surrounding landscape.

This communal-like setting is crowned by Social Haus, the property’s heart center that functions as dining room, bar and central gathering spot. Architect and designer Kristen Becker of Seattle-based Mutuus Studio worked alongside interior designer and executive co-owner Nadine Lipson to conceive interiors that cast a smoky Modernism vibe with cozy campfire-style seating, leafy green hues and shou sugi ban wood reflective of the woodland surroundings. The Michelin-worthy culinary experience, led by executive chef Brandon Cunningham, impresses with nightly curated nine-course tasting menus, gourmet wood-fired pizzas available for delivery to your private hot tub, and artful delights by James Beard-nominated pastry chef Krystle Swenson. It could well be that her rosé-soaked rhubarb cake and dark chocolate brown tart with conifer green gelato ice cream were all the wellness I needed!

I spent my days learning how to flyfish on the Blackfoot River accompanied by a patient guide; riding ATVs through sprawling pastures; stopping off at the equestrian center for a bit of horse therapy and luxuriating in a mineral mud bath at the spa. SMART STYLE

When it came to her own kitchen in the greater New York City area, French-born, Manhattan-based interior designer Laurence Carr designed the space to serve as a central wellness area for her family of five. “My husband and I have three teenagers, and this is a place where we can work, socialize and cook together,” explains Carr, who collaborated with architect Jordan Rosenberg to conceive the contemporary home. “Biophilia, plenty of natural light and sustainability were also important considerations. There are large windows that provide a connection to the garden, and the

amount of light entering the space is important in minimizing the electricity and lighting that’s necessary.” Carr kept the palette clean and simple, employing a mix of dark gray and cream cabinetry, Calacatta marble and wood accents. “Cream is much softer than white, and the gray lends a contemporary touch,” says the designer. To create a look that’s seamless and streamlined, Carr paneled many of the appliances and even included a hidden door—made to look like one of the cabinets— that leads to a walk-in pantry. “The space feels timeless yet modern.” laurencecarr.com

Claire Staszak of the Chicago firm Centered by Design is known for what she calls a holistic approach, combining her love of interiors with a passion for wellness (she is also a certified yoga instructor). So, it’s no surprise that when she was tasked with the renovation of a 1930s Colonial north of Chicago, she whipped up a kitchen for a young family that feels calm, balanced and serene. Staszak was limited to working within the kitchen’s existing footprint, however she was able to make a few key changes—including closing off an opening to the dining room, removing a window to add symmetry and adding a larger window to bring in more light—that make all the difference. “In doing this, we were able to fit in everything we wanted, including a large island and a coffee bar,” notes the designer. “The clients wanted something fresh and beautiful with a mix of Southern charm and the feel of a French bistro.” With that in mind, Staszak installed custom cabinetry from her firm’s in-house line in a light taupe shade, cafe-inspired lighting, natural wood accents and periwinkle backsplash tile from Ann Sacks. “Custom cabinetry provides the opportunity for a variety of details tailored to the homeowners’

needs, such as arched doors and open shelving,” Staszak explains. With the clients being avid cooks and entertainers, storage was a major focus. The designer incorporated hidden compartments for appliances, bakeware and utensils, while niches flanking the range hold cooking essentials such as oils and spices. Meanwhile, easy-to-clean quartz surfaces lend durability to the hardworking space. “Health and well-being are important to this couple, and I really tried to be a calm and grounding presence during the renovation process,” Staszak says. “My job is always to take the stress off my clients, make the process feel like a true collaboration, and channel a Zen attitude.” Most importantly, adds the designer, “a space doesn’t have to be boring in order to feel balanced.” centeredbydesign.com

NATURAL INSTINCT

When Los Angeles−based decorator Mandy Cheng set eyes on the magical treetop views from this Woodland Hills kitchen—which sits three stories above the ground thanks to the home’s hillside setting—it became clear that nature should take center stage in this renovation. “The view inspired the design and dictated the palette,” Cheng explains. “I wanted to bring the trees in and tie the design to the outdoors.” Cheng chose a combination of white oak upper cabinets and open shelving, which recalls oak trees outside, and green to channel the leaves. “When colors are consistent between indoors and out it gives the illusion of more space,” Cheng notes. Furthermore, the designer installed windowed cabinetry that not only references the residence’s Craftsman style, but “maintains that open, airy quality. We wanted to keep the cabinetry from feeling too heavy.” Low-maintenance quartz countertops, unlacquered brass fixtures that will develop a patina over time and a “natural-looking” textured tile backsplash round out the scheme. To address the client’s need for additional storage, Cheng installed custom drawers for cooking utensils, a nook for storing paper towels and wooden crates to hold potatoes and onions. “The previous layout discouraged cooking and eating well because it didn’t function properly,” Cheng says. “Now it feels clean, calm and inviting.” mandychengdesign.com

When hired by clients with an appreciation for the Japanese bathing ritual of a shower to cleanse the body followed by a bath to cleanse the soul, designer Lindsay Anyon Brier saw a unique opportunity for an exterior wellness space. Specifically, when she viewed their Piedmont, California, home’s deck, set conveniently off a gym, she envisioned a soaking tub. In collaboration with Berkeley Heat, she conceived a cedar hot tub seemingly dropped within the tree line. Underscoring the home’s commitment to sustainability, the creation boasts a drainage feature in lieu of chemical maintenance. (Wastewater is then used to irrigate the property.) HEAVEN SENT

An enchanting yet derelict Hawaii Island property brought together the team of designer Marion Philpotts-Miller, architect Paige Wilburn and landscape designer David Tamura. Together, they restored the home’s old growth teak ceilings and beams, infused light and flow throughout the interiors and reimagined the grounds, whose pièce de résistance is an entry courtyard designed for peaceful repose. A lanai illuminated by vintage Japanese lanterns and outfitted with an antique bench flanked by bronze Burmese guardians offers the homeowners a particularly contemplative space to enjoy the sights and sounds of several water features. DREAMING IN COLOR

Leave it to designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard to kick any notions that neutral and wellness must walk hand-in-hand to the curb. Exhibit A: This exuberant massage room set high on a cliff in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Bullard confidently swathed the space in Benjamin Moore’s Covington Blue, a languid, ocean-green tone that plays to the Sea of Cortez beyond the windows. A medley of natural woven sisal and abaca furnishings—all nods to indigenous Mexican arts and crafts—join a 1970s painting scored at an antique shop in Mexico City, which Bullard admits is his favorite element of the room. “The vibrancy holds you captive whilst still maintaining calmness due to its abstract nature and ear thy pigments,” he explains, adding, “it has a distinct and welcoming warmth reminiscent of Cabo’s famous sunsets.”

INNER SANCTUM

When designer Cheryl Settino Mosher’s clients tasked her with crafting a prayer room within their Brooklyn apartment, she did her research first. For visual inspiration, Mosher referenced Owen Jones’ The Grammar of Ornament, looking to motifs of ancient civilizations.

Ultimately, she landed on a quartet of Schumacher wallpapers in sepia tones, which were deconstructed then put together in a bespoke pattern intended to evoke the feel of a sacred space modernized for contemporary

living. Meanwhile, for the layout, she used a Qibla compass to place the family’s beloved prayer rug directed toward the Kaaba. Bathed in diffuse sunlight, the room, with its cozy, velvet-covered divan, has become a reading room as well as a place for worship. “It’s an area to recharge,” says Mosher. “Now more than ever, we need these spaces. In her more than 25 years of experience as a designer, Lisa Staprans has developed a guiding belief: “It is what I call neuroscience and beauty, and that design heals us. Our projects are highly personal, and the craftspeople, architects and builders in our circle understand and honor that just as we do.” And they’re on board with Lisa’s intentions surrounding sustainability. “We always use the healthiest materials, products and systems. But sustainability is also about worldview, and our efforts have a ripple effect on that.”

HUMAN-CENTRIC DESIGN

One of Lisa’s recent endeavors is that of designing for adults with Down syndrome and autism, through which she has discovered characteristics of space that would benefit everyone. She shares a few:

• I use natural materials and welcome a lot of natural light and views to nature.

• Everything is organized to have a sense of path and place, so you can see others in the environment and feel connected while still enjoying moments of quiet and pause.

• There are no sharp corners; all rooms are ergonomic and contoured to fit the human body—you can sit comfortably leaning up against a wall or the back of a sofa.

Asked to share her recommendation for a home that supports wellness, Lisa says, “Every home should have a meditation room or space that is quiet with no technology and elements that offer gratitude. Even a simple flower in a corner of a room can be this.” She emphasizes, “This is as important to the mind as the home gym is to the body.” Koi pond and water elements are often extensions of these rooms, as well as gardens that support meandering.

Global Perspective

A well-traveled architect brings her vision home to create a one-of-a-kind San Francisco Victorian.

Conjuring a sense of home in an unfamiliar country is no easy feat, but establishing new roots is something architect Jill Lewis has done often. The Seattle native has practiced her profession across several countries, from Italy to China to Argentina. Along the way, she designed various abodes for her growing family.

Three kids later, Lewis and her husband returned stateside, this time to San Francisco. With them came their trove of artisanal treasures and the design philosophy the architect had honed abroad: “No matter where you live, your home should be driven by context, culture and history of place,” she explains. “I wanted us to feel a connection here.”

Her vision became a reality when they found their quintessential San Francisco Victorian. Spared from the 1906 earthquake (and the subsequent fires that stopped just one block away), the dwelling boasts arched windows, tall ceilings and ornate molding. Its corner-lot location also made way for side windows that flood rooms with light, creating atypically luminous Victorian interiors.

Yet Lewis had no interest in executing a bythe-book restoration, an ethos shaped during her earliest professional years in Italy. “There, architects know how to do a modern intervention that still brings out the best historical parts of a home,” she says. Her own contemporary interpretation of San Franciscan Victoriana focused on accentuating the millwork, which required a partner deeply ingrained in the local vernacular. She found conspirators in brothers and general contractors Christopher and Jason Lennon, who understood the inner workings of this architectural style. Their team restored all the existing windows, doors, hardware and trim, even hunting down period-matching hinges “to keep the original aesthetics of the house,” Jason says.

The molding disappeared in the rear rooms, so matching pieces were crafted to continue the distinct Victorian language. Replacing the upstairs carpet, they installed oak planks to coordinate with the flooring downstairs and unified both levels with a rich espresso stain. The team also removed a few walls to streamline transitions between spaces. But notably, Lewis’ plan preserved the enclosed layout overall. “If you try to make Victorians open, you lose their essence,” she explains.

After fortifying the home’s historical core, Lewis leaned toward unconventional finishes to

invigorate the period details. Think petroleumblack paint or graphic abstract wallpaper on the ceilings, which draws attention to the crown molding. Or harnessing the interior’s expansive heights by cloaking entire rooms in a single atmospheric hue, from the library’s twilight blue to the upstairs hallway’s foggy gray. Lewis nodded to the Victorian love of marble but eschewed statuary white for bolder patterns, like the living room’s black Nero Marquina fireplace and the powder room’s Amazonia vanity dappled with citrus-green markings. Meanwhile, a host of industrial and midcentury modern light fixtures hang from elaborate ceiling medallions. “I like to juxtapose these beautiful contemporary designs within classic buildings,” Lewis notes.

The traditional and unexpected converge in the kitchen, where more bold marble—gray-veined countertops and Nero Marquina herringbone floors—takes center stage while unlacquered brass imparts patina onto the minimalist fixtures and sink. Accounting for the old home’s uncommon dimensions, the brothers custom built the glossy black cabinets on site, doing “everything but chopping down the tree,” Christopher laughs.

The family’s past life abroad is still woven into their new abode, with pieces memorializing places and relationships. Argentina lingers in the creamy cowhide rugs, the living room’s classic butterfly chairs, and the custom dining table made of canella wood by Lewis’ favorite carpenter in Buenos Aires, who convinced her to have the top burned inky black, shou sugi ban-style. Her friendship with a Beijing furniture workshop produced her collection of contemporary Chinese tables and cabinets, like the armoires she adapted into grand bedroom nightstands. This mix of styles and materials produces an organic eclecticism that could only emerge from travel. “If we had never left the U.S., our furniture would probably be more elegantly consistent,” Lewis says. “But we’ve really embraced those idiosyncrasies, absorbing all the places we’ve lived.”

Indeed, her design imagination grows richer with each new family home she creates. “I’m no longer the minimalist architect I was 20 years ago when I left Seattle,” she confesses. “We’ve witnessed a lot of change, traveled a lot of miles, and have grown into a typical family of five with all the bright and dark, small and large moments that come with that. Our house reflects those contrasts. There’s a lot going on, yet somehow it all makes sense to us.”

CALL OF THE WILD

Northwest of Lake Tahoe, a spacious contemporary abode is redesigned for year-round adventures.

Having designed dwellings in the Lake Tahoe region for a decade, Jay Jeffers has had a front-row seat to changes happening within luxury communities like Lahontan and Martis Camp. “I’ve watched the architecture become much more modern,” he says. “And owners are using their homes year-round now.” In this case, San Francisco-based couple Rob Darby and Chad Abbott, who also have an abode in Palm Springs, wanted an alpine escape from the city—one designed to feel as airy in the summer as it does cozy in winter. “Chad is from Alabama, but I grew up in Oregon. We went camping often, so mountains are my happy place,” Rob explains. Jeffers, who had worked with the couple previously, knew just what to do. “This project focused on three things: the architecture of the space, the geographic location and how the clients wanted to live,” he says.

The four-bedroom Martis Camp residence was built several years ago by Truckee-based Kelly & Stone Architects and required only a surface refresh. “We came into this wonderful structure with floors, kitchen, bathrooms all done,” Jeffers recalls. He brought back general contractor Robert Morken to help with a few tweaks, “but he did such a great job on the home originally, there wasn’t much to do,” the designer says. “We changed out the lighting and enhanced what was already there.” The biggest challenge was harmonizing the materials used on the great room’s steel-clad fireplace wall. To one side of the chimney was wood paneling, but to the other was white space. “It was too strong a contrast,” Jeffers says. Covering the double-height expanse of white with an understated blue tartan wallcovering added texture and a tailored feel. “Modern can be cold, so we wanted to warm up the house,” Rob says. “The design is a mix of mountain style and urban sophistication,” Chad adds. “But there are a few unexpected things, too.”

The wallcovering also established the home’s color scheme. “This couple likes strong, but not bright, hues and wanted a neutral palette that felt natural in the mountains without being cliché—this isn’t your average log cabin with antler chandeliers,” Jeffers explains. “But there’s also such strong daylight at this elevation that you have to mute colors to make them feel right,” he adds, explaining that a neutral gray paint can look bright

white in the mountains. Geometric patterns, too, repeat throughout the rooms. “These aren’t floral people,” he says of the clients. “Plus, geometrics can surprise and delight—they might read as one shade, but as you look closer, the pattern reveals itself.”

To furnish the great room, Jeffers found comfortable pieces, like a large sectional upholstered in a soft cotton-linen blend (“You don’t want a big, brown leather sofa here—the temperature could be 100 degrees!” he notes), and vintage European pieces, including a 1970s bar cabinet by Italian furniture designer Aldo Tura and 1950s dining room chairs by midcentury French firm Guillerme et Chambron. “They wanted the rooms to be easy and breezy. Comfortable for themselves, their guests and their beloved Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Winston, too.” Another important component for Jeffers was incorporating pieces from the couple’s art collection, especially paintings by Jennifer Pochinski, Matt Gonzalez and Tricia Strickfaden.

In the more private spaces, Jeffers shifted the palette to greens (a soft sage for the office, a deep pine for the media room) as well as darker rusts and blues, as seen in the primary bedroom. There he again harmonized bold architectural features (this time a glass door and windows of varying sizes) with dark blue walls and matching Roman shades that make the space feel “intentional and cocooned,” he says. Fitting neatly into the bedroom’s picture-window nook is an Eames chaise and ottoman upholstered in plaid. “That was really fun to do,” Jeffers notes. “You can play with a mountain theme—I love having those plaid, cozy elements—but it’s important to not go too far.” Other subtle “mountain moments” in the house include the guest bedroom’s rope lamps and a charcoal-finish bench in the hallway.

Outdoor spaces, especially a covered deck area between the living room and the couple’s bedroom, were designed for any season. “It’s the perfect shady spot in summer, or for a cup of cocoa and a fire in the winter,” the designer says. It’s also the ideal place to commune with the surroundings—the majestic forest that brought the couple here—and enjoy the natural environs that were enhanced with the help of landscape designer Jaclynn Neu. “You can have a mountain abode without making it thematic,” Jeffers adds. “This home has a sophisticated air about it, and it represents the evolution of Tahoe style.”

MAN OF STEEL

Artist Eric Powell embeds history, archeology and collective memory into his metal sculptures and public projects.

Eric Powell harvests the raw material for his singular steel sculptures from a variety of places: the bay at low tide, abandoned mines in the Nevada desert, junkyards, flea markets and old machine shops.

A master of bricolage, Powell deftly embeds such objects as rusted old tools, tractor parts, and even a dredged-up, sea-battered boat into his work—which ranges from fine art to large public installations to residential commissions, such as gates and other architectural metalwork.

“There is something powerful about giving these obsolete mechanisms new life,” Powell says. As such, his Berkeley studio is filled with kinetic sculptures and abstract works.

The artist’s love affair with steel started at age 9 when he made sculptures out of coffee cans. Powell later studied art at the California College of the Arts in Oakland before moving to Santa Fe for a time, where he learned to weld.

“Steel is magical, alchemical,” Powell enthuses. “It’s the strongest and most common building material, yet it’s as malleable as clay. Given the right amount of heat and force, you can pound, mold and bend it into virtually any shape.”

Powell’s affinity for using steel to describe the story of a place enriches the functional art he makes for private residences and public spaces. One San Francisco entry gate, for example, is composed of plow and tractor parts unearthed at his client’s Kentucky farm: removed from their original context, they are an elegant reminder of her home. When the Oakland Cultural Affairs Commission enlisted the artist to craft a welcome gate for Bella Vista Park using local artifacts, he combined these with the embedded busts of noteworthy denizens, such as Gertrude Stein.

For the public art piece Archaeology, Powell abstracted objects excavated from the former Wallis Ranch in Dublin, California, to create a powerful, site-specific sculpture that can be climbed on as well as admired. Fabricated in steel with internal armatures, the Stonehenge-scaled pulley, hook, horseshoe and gear illuminate the area’s agrarian history, creating a visual bridge from past to present.

“I love creating work that becomes an integral part of a cityscape or landscape,” says Powell, who recharges with pilgrimages to the desert, where he builds work that is left to the elements. This meditative practice helps hone his creative focus—and allows him to forage for a new trove of discarded treasures to be rendered into art.

Grand Revival

One might assume that when this elegant Colonial Revival house was built on a Pacific Heights hill back in 1916, its full potential was immediately realized. After all, it was designed by Bliss & Faville, the prestigious architecture firm behind San Francisco’s St. Francis Hotel and Bank of California Building earlier in the century. But, as in other grand homes of the era, the bottom and top floors of this four-story mansion were for staff and storage— and finished sparingly as was the custom of the age. More than 100 years would pass before the opportunity finally came for every one of its nearly 10,000 square feet to shine.

In 2017, established Pacific Heights residents Sean and Jennifer Jeffries purchased the property after consulting with their longtime interior designer, Jeffry Weisman, who confirmed that the home’s upstairs-downstairs floor plan could be converted to meet the needs of their modern family of five and frequent guests. “I love to look at a house like it’s an empty box and see what we can do with the parts that can be moved,” says Weisman, who worked with colleagues Andrew Fisher and Bryn Brugioni. In the case of this historic property, “if we didn’t touch the shell of the house, we pretty much had carte blanche to change the interiors as we wished.” Which is exactly what ensued when architects Richard Beard, Michael Juckiewicz and Rebecca Lischwe, along with general contractor Tim McDonald, signed onto the project. “We literally preserved the outside, propping it up and removing everything within—save for walls in the living room, dining room and entry,” Weisman says of project’s scope.

“Fortunately, the original design had large windows for the style and period that were assets to include,” Beard recalls. “But there were two separate stairways that went to different floors, creating a maze of circulation.” The first order of business was to simplify things by replacing the original stair (which only connected the second and third stories) with a new version that linked all levels of the house, followed by inserting an elevator in the space the service passageways once occupied. The lower floor, formerly a warren of utility rooms, was then reorganized in a way where hardworking spaces (garage, laundry and mudroom) live alongside oases of relaxation (a pair of guest suites, a wine cellar and a project room).

“By connecting everything, it really began to feel like a family house,” Weisman says.

Next, the design team expanded the primary bedroom. They incorporated an adjacent guest room and bath to give the owners a vestibule entry along with a pair of dressing rooms and baths. The kitchen was also reconfigured to better accommodate dinner parties and the baking exploits of three teenage girls. With that same trio in mind, the attic was reimagined with a lounge and bedroom suite.

Never ones to completely do away with a client’s existing furnishings for the sake of a clean slate, the designers incorporated many of the family’s treasured pieces, from antique carpets and artworks to a pair of Chinese lacquered armoires. These helped inspire a serene color palette punctuated by fabrics in rich teal and berry tones as well as a peacock-hued powder room and a butler’s pantry lacquered top to bottom in deep blue.

In the formal dining room, Fisher took cues from the sunlight flooding the space when designing a scheme devised “to glow and seduce,” Weisman says. Hand-painted silk in a warm shade of apricot wraps the walls, its swirling pattern continuing onto valances that crown coral-andgold draperies. Seemingly floating in the plane between a sunburst-patterned carpet and the gilded tea-paper ceiling are twin chandeliers and a pair of dining tables finished in shimmering gold.

When creating such pieces for a historic home, “we don’t really look to the past,” Weisman notes. “We’re making a new vision—here it was about using classical roots in a fresh way to produce something that functions for how people live today.” For example, the Jeffries family unapologetically watches movies in their formal living room; to facilitate this, the designers sourced a wall-mounted television that’s so thin, a painting can be hung over it. For the girls’ attic lounge, they chose a fanciful hanging sofa for study sessions, and, in the kitchen, there’s a large island for casual meals and afterschool hangouts. “I’ve always wanted ours to be the house where the kids and their friends could come and feel comfortable,” Jennifer says. “A place that’s open and warm with nothing too precious.”

Glamorous though these rooms may seem when a gilded surface catches the flicker of evening candlelight, the design team has given her that here. “We were able to create a feeling of low-key luxury from the front door straight to the back,” Weisman says. “In every direction, it feels like a soft, beautiful journey.”

There are many window and door manufacturers, but they don’t all strive to bridge industry gaps. Enter, Glass Concepts. After working as a sales rep in the trade for 10 years, Jeff Wilcox noticed an issue no one else seemed to be addressing: direct, collective communication between the architect, homeowner, builder and manufacturer about the selection and installation of windows and doors wasn’t happening. “I founded Glass Concepts and made solving this my mission,” he shares. Today, the firm has become a go-to resource for trade pros and homeowners alike. It is known for the smooth process and expert advice its team offers. And that team is what Wilcox is most focused on. “At this point in my career,

ON THE FRONTIER

Wilcox shares the details of his most innovative moments.

• An inventive story. In 2002, an architect came to me to craft a push-out casement window that was not available except through custom design. I went down to a local hardware store, grabbed a few things, put them on a Loewen clad window and sent it back to the factory. Within a year, Loewen was launching its push-out casement window at the annual International Builders’ Show. Fast-forward 20 years, every manufacturer has one.

• Lasting legacies. I’ve been on the forefront of quite a few industry trends, including bifolding door systems, thermally-broken steel windows and doors, exporting Loewen windows to China, featuring full-size designs in our showroom, minimizing window frames, exterior anodized finishes and more.

• Describe the materials and styles that define your pieces. We fabricate our fixtures primarily out of solid brass, but also work in copper, steel and aluminum. • How is technology playing a role in your work?

We are excited about LED technology. It is simply inspirational and has had an amazing impact on our new and custom designs and our projects.

• What’s new?

A new design that we are very excited about is a cast glass sconce and matching pendant that is offered in three sizes. It began as a custom project we then modified into a product line. Our friends at our local glass studio are making the cast glass and a perfect blanket of warm dimmable LED light illuminates it.

• Talk about the legacy you wish to leave behind.

Top Phoenix Day recently restored the Curran theatre’s 100-year-old crystal chandelier, which was originally built by their predecessors. Right When Phoenix Day restores one of their historic pieces the original drawings come along with the refreshed piece.
