Outdoor Life is our off-duty adventure maxim. It’s the break away from our screens, immersed in the outdoors, with friends, with family, sharing experiences and excitement, making the most of what nature has to offer. It’s why we love the British summer. With daylight hours maximised, warmer temperatures and those beautiful blue sky days, there’s no better time to get outside and discover something new. One of our favourite ways to explore our fair isle is a road trip. Whether you favour a bike, bus or a classic VW camper van, it’s the perfect blend of new sights, sounds and adventures, with evenings spent under the stars, plotting the journey around the campfire. With so much on our doorstep, it can be hard to know where to start.

The Atlantic Highway For a route that lets you make the most of our hills and coastline alike, it’s no surprise the Atlantic Highway is so popular. AKA the A39, starting in Bridgewater, Somerset, it skirts along the North Devon coastline before tracking into Cornwall. With the Quantock Hills AONB, Exmoor National Park and Hartland Heritage Coast all featuring on this fantastic journey, there is ample opportunity to leave the road and explore the wild windswept hills and rugged coastal paths. If you’re travelling as a group, with family or simply want to stretch the legs, a diversion to Croyde is highly recommended. A renowned surf spot, with fantastic beaches stretching north and south, it makes an excellent rendezvous point, perfected with the addition of a barbecue!

Campsites, B&Bs, luxury cottages… you’ll find a full spectrum of quality accommodation along the route. For that micro-festival feeling, get your friends and head to Hartland. There’s nothing quite like opening your tent door to be greeted with spectacular views, salty sea air and lush greens all around. From there, the South West Coast Path provides quality walking; if climbing is more your thing, there’s some fine bouldering problems to be found along the beach – just make sure to keep an eye on the tide. As you leave Devon behind, the road heads inland. If you fancy some fabled beast spotting, split off the main route and head to Bodmin Moor. Myths aside, the highest and least populated part of Cornwall is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Away from the tourist hubbub, its rugged, wild, immersive landscape is ideal for some quiet contemplation. For the final leg of the trip, aim for Padstow. Although not technically at the end of the route – which finishes with a merging into the A30 – this famous foodie destination has too much on offer to miss out. A working fishing port at the head of the Camel River, it’s the start and end point for the Camel Cycle Trail, an ideal location to try out some new water sports and has seven golden beaches close by. The Outdoor Life epitomised, it’s a fitting ending to this classic summer road trip.

Plastic has become a huge part of our everyday lives. Not only has it changed the way we travel or package, but also how we eat, clean or dress. It is cheap, durable and lightweight, and has changed a lot of things for the better. However, the consequences of using plastics have become more and more visible. When we think of the issue, images of plastic bags and bottles come to mind, but synthetic textiles are an even bigger part of the problem. SYNTHETIC TEXTILES: MICROPLASTICS Synthetic materials are poisoning our oceans and food supply. When washed, synthetic textiles release microplastics. Classified according to their size, these are plastics that measure less than or equal to 5mm. Neither washing machines nor wastewater treatment plants are able to filter the tiny plastic particles out. Especially in the aquatic environment, synthetic substances have a high potential for damage, since they can be spread worldwide by streams and rivers.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE The Guppyfriend washing bag is the first practical way to prevent microfibers from entering into rivers and oceans. It is a scientifically approved solution against microplastic pollution from washing.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP? To help solve the problem, here are ten easy steps you can take to change your washing habits for the better:

As synthetic textiles dry fast, skip the spin cycle or at least reduce the rotation speed to help protect your clothes and the environment.

DON’T WASH SOLID ITEMS WITH YOUR LAUNDRY Fibres break due to the mechanical forces in the washing machine; anything solid washed with your clothes leads to significantly more fibres breaking. Avoid adding items such as shoes and shin guards.

SOFT TO SOFT Separate textiles with a hard surface from those with a soft surface. For example, by washing your jeans separately to your fleece items, you can help reduce your contribution to wash-related microplastic pollution.

DON’T TUMBLE DRY The heat and the mechanical forces inside a tumble dryer are also a culprit of microplastic pollution. As synthetic clothes are already quick drying, choose to airdry your clothes instead. If you have to use a dryer, aim to filter the condensed water.

Travel has many benefits for both the traveller and the destination. It offers an exchange of cultures, economic benefits and a different perspective on the world around us. However, it all comes at a cost to the planet. In the first half of 2018 alone there were 641 million international tourist arrivals worldwide, so it’s crucial to look at how we can make our travel more sustainable.

TRANSPORTATION & TRAVEL Flights account for a significant proportion of global CO2 emissions. To eliminate flight from international travel is unrealistic but we can change the way we use this form of transport. Lots of airlines have environmental roadmaps stretching into the future but what can be done right now? Carbon offsetting is the process of undertaking a carbon reduction activity to balance a carbon producing one, such as a holiday flight. Many of the major European airlines provide the option to donate to a carbon offsetting initiative - this can be a great way to minimise the environmental impact of your flight. Another way to fly sustainably is to fly less. The cheapest way to fly usually involves several flights and connections that add layovers, and in turn fuel, to the journey. By spending a little more, you can reduce the time you’re in the air. A more direct flight will inevitably produce fewer carbon emissions. Finally, if you can use greener forms of public transport then do so! Crosscontinental trains, inner-city trams and even taxi sharing are great ways to reduce your carbon footprint.

SLEEPING GREEN Your accommodation can also offer some sustainability wins. If you’re looking for traditional accommodation, such as hotels and hostels, you can check to see if they hold one of the trusted Eco Accreditations. Hotels certified by organisations such as the Green Tourism Business Scheme, Green Globe and STEP have been evaluated and approved by these recognised environmental bodies. For the more adventurous sustainable traveller, there are plenty of 100% green energy lodgings to be found, but you can expect to pay a premium for these. Alternatively, if you're on a budget, there’s always a tent!

THE LITTLE THINGS These small, simple changes can all have a positive impact. Here are a few final ideas to help you take your first sustainable travel steps: • Try going paperless with your itinerary, confirmations and reservations. Your smartphone can be used to get you through check-in scanners • Carry a reusable water bottle with you. It's an easy way to cut down on singleuse plastic • Be sensitive to highly visited areas. Follow local guidance, adhere to the rules and stick to the marked paths to minimise your impact on the flora and fauna • Walk wherever you can. Walking is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in your surroundings and experience your chosen destination fully where walking isn’t possible, opt to travel by public transport • Do not disturb. Use the do not disturb sign on your hotel room to avoid unnecessary towel washing and room cleaning • Buy local. Wherever you visit, try to buy from local small business owners, it helps promote sustainable and localised economic growth

When planning a trip, we research the countries, look for the cheapest deals on flights and accommodation, think how long we are going to stay there, what activities we are going to do and what to wear. But it is just as important to take steps to protect our health. It is important to know what disease risks are out there. They can be carried by food, water, insects, animals, and even by other people.

It is common for travellers to become ill while overseas, with the most common complaint being a bout of travellersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; diarrhoea. But there are other more serious, even life-threatening illnesses out there. We hope these top tips will help ensure you stay healthy while travelling:

1. Research your destinations While planning your trip, research the disease risks relating to the areas you want to visit. Check if you need any certificates to prove you have had certain vaccinations when you enter the country, e.g. Yellow Fever. Look at the Visa entry requirements for each country you plan to visit; these may change closer to your time of travel but will give you a guide to what is required. Careful pre-planning is essential in safeguarding your health. For up-to-date advice about local customs, religious holidays and laws, as well as guidance on visiting politically unstable areas, visit https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice. It is also worth subscribing to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office free email notification service. It will alert you to any updates and changes to the travel advice of the countries you plan to visit.

2. Talk to a travel health expert As well as doing research, seek advice from an expert 6-8 weeks before you travel. Your GP may be able to provide this advice, or you may want to get your vaccine history from the GP and go to a private travel clinic. This professional needs to undertake a thorough risk assessment of your trip and offer any vaccinations and anti-malarial prophylaxis which you may need.

3. Include vaccines within your travel budget Some vaccines are free at your GP, but others are not - for example, you will need to pay for anti-malarial tablets. Certain vaccines also require a course of injections, to ensure you are protected to a safe level. It is vital that you do not skip on protecting your health. It is much easier to do this in the UK, rather than having to go to a hospital abroad - probably cheaper and less stressful too! 4. Understand what medical facilities will be like at your destination You need to be prepared for medical facilities which are not up to the standard of our own. The International Society of Travel Medicine global clinic directory can tell you the nearest reputable treatment centres for your destination, visit http://www.istm.org for more information. 5. Make sure you have appropriate travel insurance Travel insurance is essential. In the case you become unwell or have an accident, it will cover the cost of medical care and pay for repatriation back to the UK if you become seriously ill. It is crucial that your insurance covers all the activities that you will be undertaking. So if you plan on doing a bungee jump, make sure this activity is covered! Your insurance will not be valid if you become ill or injured from anything not listed on your policy. At the time of writing, you can get an EHIC card to cover costs in Europe: it is free to apply for, through the NHS.

INSECT PROTECTION

Between 2000 and 2018, the number of cases of malaria per year fell globally by an astonishing 19 per cent. This translates to over 43 million lives which would otherwise have been affected by one of the world’s most persistent diseases. However, despite that drop the World Health Organisation reported an increase in malaria cases from 217m in 2016 to 219m in 2017. Add to that the equally mosquito-borne threats of yellow fever, dengue fever and the much publicised Zika virus, the bites of ticks, tsetse flies and fleas (amongst others) and you find many compelling reasons to take protective measures against such potentially hazardous insects. Fortunately, there are excellent ways to do this and all within easy reach of the average traveller. The global drop in malarial infection was mostly attributed to the distribution of over a billion insecticide-treated mosquito nets across Africa. So make sure to sleep beneath one! Discuss suitable anti-malarial drugs with your GP, nurse or pharmacist - they will greatly help reduce the risk of contracting the disease. Mosquitoes tend to congregate in damp areas and particularly around standing water, bear this in mind on your travels. Your clothes are the starting point for protection against biting insects. Wearing long, loose-fitting clothing that minimises your skin exposure is a basic precaution in high-risk areas. Any exposed skin should be lightly coated with an effective repellent. Historically the most effective mixtures have included DEET (diethyltoluamide), a potent chemical which intensely repels mosquitoes. TRAVEL SECURITY

To ensure safe, secure and stress free travel it typically pays to think of any potential problem and then work backwards. So, let’s think about all the various ways that your belongings could be compromised in transit. Although most baggage handlers are sensitive, thoughtful human beings just like the rest of us, your bag is not going to be treated lightly. So make sure that everything inside it is well cushioned and packed to survive impacts from any direction. Electronic theft of sensitive bank and passport data is unfortunately on the rise in this era of technology. Scanners are easily available and can be used at several metres from the target. It’s a smart move to invest in RFiD blocking cases or wallets which will help prevent the unauthorised reading of your data. Unsecured zips may open accidentally whilst in transit, they may even be helped along in this process; so secure any zips or openings with a suitable lock. Beyond luggage, it’s also key to ready yourself for any bureaucratic nightmares that can be sparked by loss or theft. Always keep your essential documents on your person or in your hand luggage. A body wallet which you wear under your clothes may help. Make and separately store photocopies of your passport and travel insurance certificate. Write down essential numbers, such as those of the local British embassy, your insurance company’s helpline and your bank’s international contact number on a sheet of paper and keep it somewhere safe - perhaps under the lining of your shoe or in a money belt. And put all of this information on your phone.
