M I N I s u m m e r ‘15

I have a sign hanging over my desk with one of my favorite quotes, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” We all need that reminder every now and again, don’t we? Scrolling through beautiful Instagram feeds filled with culinary art and wanderlust, spotless living rooms sans laundry baskets and Lego bricks, we’re all too quick to wonder why our everyday situations don’t resemble those perfect squares. Are we doing something wrong? The answer is NO! When I started Mini, the one thing I wanted to strive for was showing readers that the parents they look up to and pass in the glossies are just like us! I wanted to dive into their everyday routines, share what helps them feel put together on little sleep, what you might find in their wardrobe or fridge. And I’m proud to say, this issue does a great job of that! So grab your iPad, laptop or iPhone, stick an umbrella in your drink and enjoy! This season can be the busiest of all for parents and oftentimes life can move in and take over. But just remember— everyone has those perfectly imperfect moments (whether they make it onto Instagram or not) and there’s no need to compare your version to anyone else’s. Happy summer, Mini friends!

AMBER THRANE

Mini chats with the sunny California-based mom of two and co-owner behind Dulcet Creative. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOGRAPHY BY DULCET CREATIVE

You are one creative mama! Tell us how Dulcet Creative came to be and what you do.

MINI |

I started Dulcet Creative with my best friend Kayla Sampson last year and it was born out of the desire to use our creativity as a way to “sweeten” our every AMBER THRANE |

day lives. The business really is two-fold. We do photography and styling for companies, which has allowed us to work with amazing businesses, meet amazingly talented people and learn a ton from them. The other portion of our business is our heart for sharing what we’ve learned along the way with others.

How do you balance such a fun career with motherhood?

MINI |

I do a lot of my work at night or I set my daughter up with a craft and get a few things done during my son’s nap. I try to give my kids enough one on one time that they never care too much when I have to do a little bit of work here and there. It also helps that my business partner is accommodating and my parents live close and love to spend the day with my kids when I have a photoshoot. I’ve learned that there is always something more we could be doing and that some weeks flow smoothly and others don’t. We have to give ourselves so much grace every day to be okay with that. AMBER THRANE |

We know it’s easy for moms to feel overwhelmed trying to keep all of the plates spinning. How do you stay motivated?

MINI |

Find what rejuvenates you and plug it into your day, week and month. Some moms need time away from their kids, a good book or a hot bath and silence. I personally like traveling with my family so I make sure to plan things to look forward to at least once a month, whether that is a day trip to someAMBER THRANE |

where new or a camping trip to the beach. I also remind myself consistently to never compare my growth to others. It’s so great to get inspired by people but I’m reminded all the time that we all have different journeys. In a career that requires you to push the chic factor, tell us how you bring that home. What went into designing your home or what is your overall aesthetic?

MINI |

The overall aesthetic of my home is just very simple, neutral and airy with lots of natural plants and modern elements thrown in there. We bought a fixer home and from the second we saw it, I’ve had a pretty clear vision of how it will eventually look. For now, we just fix it up a little bit at a time and it keeps us busy and young. AMBER THRANE |

What are your favorite elements in your kids spaces?

MINI |

My son’s room just kind of evolved into a modern take on outer space. I love his hanging origami mobile that looks like the stars and the constellations Ipainted on his wall. My daughter’s first bed was designed by me and built by my dad which is so special. It’s a cute little scalloped bohemian bed that makes her feel like a princess. [Her room is nice and neutral] with pops of color that can be switched out whenever her taste changes. AMBER THRANE |

Q&A FAVORITE RESTAURANT WITH THE KIDS My kids are funny and love sushi, so we go to Shogun. Let’s move on to style! Do you think your style has changed since you’ve had kids? How about your beauty routine?

MINI |

I definitely don’t shop as much as I did before kids. My beauty routine changes based on how much time I have, but I’ve gotten it down to ten minutes on a day that I don’t have to shower— the kinds of things that moms are proud of. AMBER THRANE |

MINI |

We aren’t the most scheduled or organized parents, but we do our best and we love with everything we have. That segways into what is the most important thing to me in raising my kids— LOVE. It sounds cheesy, but it’s so true. It uncomplicates all of the most complex things and is the gateway to all of the most important things like faith, motives, forgiveness, and patience. I am constantly amazed and humbled by how much my kids teach me about love actually. AMBER THRANE |

How about your kids’ style? What are your favorite things to dress them in?

MINI |

[Their style] is much more bright and patterned and exciting than how I dress myself, mostly because they can pull it off! I am way too much of a bargain shopper to dress them in most of the amazing brands I drool over, but I love Zara and H&M and Cotton On Kids. AMBER THRANE |

Designer Rebecca Minkoff opens her SoHo store for a “Summer Dreaming” dreamcatcher how-to with Hiho Batik. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEXANDRA WOLF

A longtime fan of the brand, designer Rebecca Minkoff could not wait to introduce her mom friends to Hiho Batik. Minkoff held a private “Summer Dreaming” event in her SoHo store where the Minis in attendance each learned how to make dreamcatchers. Among the chic summer party goers were Minkoff and her two Minis, Luca and Bowie, Wendy Wallace, Market Director of InStyle, Amri Kibbler of Hey Mama and of course, the founders of Hiho Batik themselves, Robyn Stylman and Julie Gordon.

“Hiho Batik specializes in the ancient art of batik, which involves using wax and dyes to create an image or pattern on fabric,” the owners explain. “We opened [to fulfill] a need in our community for a creative space that offered something special for a variety of ages. We live in such a fast-paced world and the activities we offer at Hiho Batik are meant to encourage one to slow down. We find that both kids and adults equally enjoy coming here and we think that’s incredibly special.” M I N I s u m m e r ‘15

Mini chats with the actress, comedian and New York Times bestselling author (and mom!) of funny reads Ali in Wonderland and Happily Ali After. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTO COURTESY OF HARPER COLLINS

We’re loving your new book, Happily Ali After. In a nutshell, what will readers find in this book?

MINI |

they feel they’re hanging out with their best friend!

Diving into the section dedicated to ALI WENTWORTH | A hilarious journey with parenting. Let’s keep it real, what’s helped me through my own version of self-imyou cut through the parenting chaos over provement. Many women have told me they the years? enjoy this book with a glass of wine because MINI |

A sense of humor. I like to make my kids laugh at some of the absurdity that happens in parenting. Once my 12-year-old was so mad at me and screamed, “I hate you Ali Wentworth!” I stormed into her bedroom and said, “It’s I hate you MOM! Don’t sully the brand!” And we both cracked up.

ALI WENTWORTH |

that hilariously in this book. What advice would you give or what perspective have you gained on wellness? We can’t be perfect beings. Do what you can do. If it’s a 30 minute walk, great! If you remember to take your calcium pill, great again. Unless you’re aiming to be a model in your latter years, just do what makes you feel good and is good for you!

ALI WENTWORTH |

What do you think is the greatest challenge being the mom of two daughters?

MINI |

The book is categorized into four parts— Inspiration, Marriage, Parenting and Wellness. Give us your new life mantra in these areas.

MINI |

Not having them fall into the celebritygotta-look-perfect-trap. Girls fall prey so easily to body [and] face image issues and pop culture and the images they are constantly bombarded with don’t help. I sometimes show them images on Instagram and explain why they’re inappropriate (IE. young starlets almost naked with pouty mouths).

ALI WENTWORTH |

Onto marriage— You’re married to George Stephanopoulos and maintaining crazy schedules, how do you keep things fresh and fun in your marriage?

MINI |

We do date nights! And take naps! George gets up at 2:30 AM every morning and you better believe I’m in bed with him at 8:30 PM.

ALI WENTWORTH |

Inspiration— You have to pick and chose what inspires YOU! Some things work for some people and not for others. For me, telling me I’ll look good in a bikini never motivated me, but telling me I’ll have a heart attack young does! Marriage— Don’t neglect it! And keep laughing! Parenting— Enjoy your children. They will feel it and it makes them better people. Wellness— I hate to say it, I wish it were glazed doughnuts, but EXERCISE! ALI WENTWORTH |

Wrapping it all up in a bow— If you could give your daughters one piece of life advice, what would it be?

MINI |

Enjoy it! Savor it all! And brush your teeth or you’ll never get asked to prom.

A PAST COVER MOM OF MINI

Daphne Oz first shared her thoughts about motherhood last summer. This time, she opens up about preparing to welcome a second little bundle of joy into her family— a little boy!

68

M I N I s u m m e r ‘15

We’re so excited to chat with you again! You’re soon to become a mom of two! How excited are you for your family to expand?

MINI |

John and I are over the moon! I’m not sure Philo really understands what is about to happen, but she’s so good at taking care of her baby doll, I feel like she’ll be a natural. We’ve had so much fun with her, it feels like we’re just going to get a double dose of that magic. We always joke we want seven kids, so we’re on our way!

DAPHNE OZ |

We’re certain Philo will be the best big sister! How are you preparing her to have a new baby in the house?

MINI |

I tell her every day that there’s a baby in my tummy and she kisses it. My biggest priority is just to have her do as much with us as possible once the baby comes. I never want her to feel like she’s lost me or is missing time, so it’s just a matter of giving her the extra love and patience she’s probably going to need until she realizes how lucky she is I’ve brought home a best friend for her!

DAPHNE OZ |

MINI |

You’ve also found out you’re

having a BOY! How did you share the news with your family? It was really fun to find out this time and we are all so excited. We called our parents and told them to get ready for a wild little boy to join the party! I let my dad do the big gender reveal when he was visiting us on The Chew by wearing a blue shirt and tie, which was so fun for both of us!

DAPHNE OZ |

Are you starting to shop for boy clothes and designing a new nursery?

MINI |

I’m really lucky because I have aunts who have a bunch of little boys, so I just got a shipment of more boy clothes than I could ever know what to do with. I’m ordering some new onesies for the first couple months, but other than that I am totally stocked. I know better this time around than to invest in complicated or fancy clothing— so much of that stuff that I bought Philo for the first year was either never worn or destroyed immediately. In terms of the nursery, I think I’m still going to keep it fairly neutral, like I did with Philo. Just a warm, cozy, soft place with everything we need— lots of whites and creams, a sheepskin, gold and wood accents.

DAPHNE OZ |

As a co-host on The Chew and a foodie, what have you been cooking a lot of this pregnancy, so far?

MINI |

RAINBOW BABY

This bright blanket from The Land of Nod is perfect for kids spaces or summer picnics!

I feel like I’m eating so much more with him— tons of midnight snacks. He really likes savory food: Mexican (I eat chips and salsa for breakfast some mornings), falafel (I love to make my own, really herby and fresh), pizza (Philo loved that too… maybe it’s just that I really love pizza), a burger now and then, plus plenty of tart vinaigrette salads and fresh fruit. I can’t get enough watermelon and I’ve just devoured a bag full of the first juicy peaches of the season. And Peanut Chews! My husband keeps them in the car for me. It’s been fun to be pregnant in the spring and summer, since fresh produce is so easy and perfect to prepare.

DAPHNE OZ |

What are you enjoying cooking for Philo? Does she have favorite foods or meals right now?

MINI |

I cannot get enough of sweet, cold watermelon cubes with dollops of (pasteurized) goat cheese and a drizzle of olive oil, sea salt and cracked black pepper! It’s so fast to put together and hits my sweet and savory buttons while being really light and refreshing— perfect for a summer pregnancy! I also have been making a ton of pulled chicken salads. I’ll just use whatever is left from a rotisserie, and toss it together with chopped apples, maybe snap peas or cabbage, tons of fresh herbs (mint, parsley, chives), scallions, and then a simple oil and red wine vinegar dressing.

DAPHNE OZ |

Let’s talk style. Any new wardrobe staples for dressing the bump this time around?

MINI |

I bought two long, flowy dresses from Zara that I am living in. They’re so easy to make look polished even though they’re essentially like wearing tailored sheets. I also invested in a couple long tanks and t-shirts from Madewell, ASOS Maternity, and Destination Maternity/Pea in A Pod. I feel like all you really need are cute pregnancy jeans, shorts, or leggings and a top that’s long enough to cover up the elastic part.

DAPHNE OZ |

She’s been so good about eating this avocado-banana-spinach-yogurt smoothie every morning. She helps me put everything in the blender, which is a fun way to help her start to learn what everything is. She’s still really good about eating her vegetables if I sing her songs and she loves pasta with red sauce, yellow lentils, chicken and a roasted ginger-soy-garlic salmon that I make. She also has this mini kitchen right next to mine where she is always cooking and washing dishes— it’s hysterical!

DAPHNE OZ |

You shared a recipe with us the last time we chatted! What is your go-to summer recipe this year?

I also think we all have to keep reminding ourselves there are only 24 hours in the day. If everything doesn’t get done, it’s understandable. The most important thing is to do the best I can and enjoy every moment.

DAPHNE OZ |

Give us the rundown of a typical or ideal summer day with your little family.

MINI |

My ideal summer day is a Saturday at my family’s place in Maine when my husband is home. We wake up, have breakfast tacos, homemade blueberry pancakes or pastries from Standard Baking Co. in Portland and then read the paper while Philomena naps. Then we take her to the beach or set up the sprinkler in the backyard! In the afternoon, we’ll lie in the hammock and sing songs (Itsy Bitsy Spider, probably, since she just learned the hand motions and loves it) and play hide and seek and finger paint. Maybe we’ll go for a drive and explore. We found a great pick-your-own blueberry place last year! For dinner, it’s a lobster bake and fresh corn on the cob, tomato salad and homemade garlic bread! [Next it’s] s’mores on the bonfire after Philo’s asleep— next year, I’ll let her stay up. I’m tempted to say I’d finish with a movie in a cold room, but I’ll probably be asleep.

Talk to us about your garden! What are you currently growing? What do you love to grow?

but right now I have lots of lettuce greens, potatoes, six different kinds of chiles, summer squash zucchini, patty pan squash, gherkins, watermelon, cantaloupe, pinto beans, tomatillos, cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, fennel, chard, garlic, leeks, all the herbs. It’s a lot, and I cook all of it so no favorites.

How long have you had the garden and what inspired you to grow your own food?

MINI |

I’ve had it for a little less then a year and it’s something that I’ve dreamt of for many, many years. To see something go from seed to table and to taste the difference from homegrown compared to supermarket produce is a dream come true for someone who cooks for a living.

Talk to us about how your garden changed the way you ate during your pregnancy. What did you eat a lot of?

MINI |

MARCELA VALLADOLID |

I ate a lot of citrus and a lot of salads. All from the garden. Honestly, it was a great pregnancy and I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I really tried to keep my food choices clean and healthy so I could maintain my energy and it worked.

MARCELA VALLADOLID |

How are you getting your neighborhood involved?

MINI |

How has growing your own food changed the way you and your family eat?

MINI |

Our menus are much more seasonal, for obvious reasons. And our food is much simpler. When you have such amazing natural sweetness and flavor all you need is a little olive oil, sea salt and a quick roast. MARCELA VALLADOLID |

How are you teaching your family great eating habits by growing things with them? What habits are you hoping to instill in them?

MINI |

My older son Fau planted the pinto bean for a school project in a mason jar then went out and planted it in the garden without me even noticing. Now it’s gotten so big we had to add a trellis. He can’t wait for them to grow, be dried out and cooked. He understands, respects and is so excited about the process. That’s what I want from my kids. MARCELA VALLADOLID |

I often have my son’s or my nieces’ classmates over and we harvest and talk about ingredients! I’m planning on bringing all of my son’s and nieces’ classrooms in the fall for harvest and cooking lessons. MARCELA VALLADOLID |

Q&A FAVORITE FAMILY MEAL French Wine, seared lamb chops and roasted garden veggies. PREGNANCY CRAVING Minneolas. I would eat a dozen in one sitting. BEST DATE NIGHT Madeo’s in West Hollywood. FAVORITE KIDS MOVIE Up! PARENTING ADVICE Love cures everything.

We’re loving the new collection for PBKids! Talk to us about how your style is mirrored in the collection.

MINI |

My approach to clothing is similar to my approach to design [and] interiors. I like classic comfortable pieces. My lifestyle tells a pretty consistent story— nothing too precious or complicated, just clean, well-made pieces that will stand the test of time.

JENNI KAYNE |

Did your own children inspire you to create some of the pieces in this collection? How so?

MINI |

Yes, they were certainly an inspiration! My goal for the collection with Pottery Barn Kids was to create items I would want in my own kids’ rooms at home. I approached it as if I was doing everything over again, designing their rooms from scratch. These are truly pieces I can’t wait to incorporate.

JENNI KAYNE |

We’re loving the fun, statement pieces like the plush zebra head and pendant lights. What is the best way to incorporate these into design in children’s spaces since these will pack a (chic!) punch?

MINI |

The animal heads are really versatile. You can collage them into a gallery wall to add dimension or simply hang three in a line over a desk, bed or playroom.

How about must-haves for a playroom?

MINI |

Most important are the rug or a play structure, just like the wonderful tent we designed for the collection. A beautiful quilt or blanket can transform a room instantly. They are an easy way to bring color to a room and are softer to play on.

JENNI KAYNE |

What would you say is a no-no in decorating kids spaces?

MINI |

I love wooden toys over plastic. I think they’re beautiful and safe, and they encourage my kids to use their imaginations.

JENNI KAYNE |

We’re headed to many baby showers this summer! What pieces from the collection would make excellent baby shower gifts?

MINI |

M I N I s u m m e r ‘15

That’s a great question! If the parents have a name picked out, I would gift the baby’s initials in glitter letters and a set of muslin swaddles. When I first had my children, I only wanted to wrap them in the coziest fabrics. A new mom can never have enough blankets!

We also have blue camo pants with an elastic waist band for those picky boys that don’t like tight pants. I’m [also] very excited about our new denim jacket and our super cool plaid flannel shirts, especially our houndstooth dip-dye button down.

routine into the mix. What do you stick to, fitness or diet wise? After my third son was born and I was hitting my mid-30s and I needed a little extra help losing the baby weight. I found Nutrisystem and became a spokesperson after successfully losing 40 pounds with their program. My husband loves to work out and we find alone time hitting the gym together, which is nice [since] date nights are few and far between these days. I also love to spend time with my girlfriends taking walks, spin classes and paddle boarding. MELISSA JOAN HART |

Your show Melissa & Joey just wrapped a successful run! What was your favorite part of working with Joey Lawrence or on the show in general?

MINI |

We have to talk style! What are your boys living in these days?

MINI |

My oldest, Mason is all about comfy pants, which is where we got the inspiration for our new camo and khaki elastic waistband pants. My Brady, who is seven, loves anything with bright colors and Tucker, who is two, loves anything with animals on it like our new Tahoe Bear graphic or the goofy lobster from the spring collection. I think moms of boys need to have tons of energy and just expect that your house won’t be neat again until they are grown and move out. I’ve had to learn that playing with my boys is much more important than any household chore or email. It’s a hard thing to remember, but I truly try to keep in mind that they are only young once. They won’t always want to snuggle in your bed after a nightmare or hold your hand at the zoo or give you giant bear hugs when they get off the bus. You need to soak up every minute and be present for the little moments.

MINI |

Let’s face it— motherhood is hard! What do you think is the one thing no one really prepares you for?

MINI |

Would you say you and your husband are a team when it comes to parenting or do you play different roles?

MINI |

My husband and I definitely back each other up when it comes to parenting and disciplining the kids — we’re a team. He calls me “Santa” because I spoil the kids and he has the iron fist. I wish I didn’t, but I’ll say to the kids, “Do you want me to call Daddy and tell him what you did?” I always thought I’d be strict, but I’m not. MELISSA JOAN HART |

What do you think is the greatest challenge of being the mom of three boys?

MINI |

M I N I s u m m e r ‘15

There is so much no one prepares you for, starting with breastfeeding and continuing all the way through life. But the great thing is you can lean on friends and family and others in your community going through the same struggles of child rearing. And no one prepares you for the fact that heads bleed... A LOT! So when you think they need an ambulance, try cleaning the wound first. Oftentimes, it’s a tiny scrape. MELISSA JOAN HART |

FROM THE PARTY TO THE OFFICE

and everything in between, the Alice + Olivia brand aims to dress women for all aspects of their lives. But how does the CEO and Creative Director manage to keep up with the thriving label with two littles— while pregnant? Mini sits down to find out!

Talk to us about how Alice + Olivia came to be. Is there a specific memory that stands out from the early days of the brand?

MINI |

I started it as fun, novelty pants. I remember our first show having the girls walk topless carrying beautiful bouquets of color-coordinated flowers. I remember launching at Barneys and the feeling of seeing my designs in a store for the first time. I remember opening our first retail store. It’s been 13 years and I have lots of great memories!

STACEY BENDET |

How is your personal style reflected in the Alice + Olivia line?

MINI |

There are so many pieces in the [latest] collection that I am absolutely coveting, from our beaded boots to the long jacquard vests and velvet striped jackets. I can’t wait to try it all on!

STACEY BENDET |

What do you find yourself wearing most often?

MINI |

I am almost seven months pregnant, so I have been wearing maxi skirts and stretchy tops these days! But I am still rocking some bell bottoms. The leather ones we did for fall are a MNO (Mommy’s Night Out!) must!

STACEY BENDET |

Describe your daughters’ style. What style quirks or loves have they inherited from you?

MINI |

It is very much about me, what I see, what I am doing, what I love and of course, what I want to wear! I think of the brand as a true women’s lifestyle brand— I want to dress women for every part of their lives… from the party to the office to the weekend and beach! It is constantly evolving.

STACEY BENDET |

What are some of your favorite pieces from the current Alice + Olivia collection?

Sunglasses: Sons + Daughters

MINI |

Eloise is more of the minimalist. She loves black ponti pants and white button-down shirts, hair in a pony, high top sneakers— she is really cool in her own minimalist way. Scarlet is my little fashionista, heart-shaped glasses, tutus, rocker t-shirts— she is a character!

What is your advice for designing a great summer wardrobe? Are there pieces you’re excited to incorporate this season?

MINI |

I think summer is the time for beautiful flowing dresses and skirts. A bohemian feel to dressing, tunics, beaded sandals— and you can never go wrong with a little fringe! I am [also] always a fan of big, fun hats and bright colors!

I start each morning doing Ashtanga yoga. I have practiced Ashtanga for 12 years through pregnancies, late nights and all. It is always the way I start my day!

STACEY BENDET |

STACEY BENDET |

How does that style carry over into your home? What inspiration went into designing your home spaces?

MINI |

I find that fashion and interiors are constantly mixing together in my mind. Things I am designing or working on for a store will often influence a color or print in a collection. I have also been known to use collection fabrics in my home.

STACEY BENDET |

Moms are always pressed for time. What are your simple steps to great style?

MINI |

Madness mornings always! I am a big fan of the pulled back hair in a bun look! It is quick and clean and red lipstick takes 30 seconds for a color pop!

STACEY BENDET |

How do you balance work and motherhood? Do you think there are any keys to keeping the balance?

MINI |

The best I can! I think it is important to make time for yourself, but it is never easy! You just do the best you can.

STACEY BENDET |

If you could give your children one piece of style advice, what would it be?

MINI |

Give us a sneak peek into your life. How do you begin each morning and end each day? Do you have a routine?

MINI |

To believe in your dreams and never give up.

We love a mom with her pulse on style! Give us a peek into why you started BURU and what it means.

MINI |

After the arrival of our sweet Olive, I realized that my personal style needed a shift. I immediately learned that most of my wardrobe was not nursingfriendly or washable or flexible enough to accommodate the changes happening to my body. While many brands have made huge advancements in maternity fashion, no one was speaking to moms post birth— a much longer phase of motherhood. After spending a lot of time online trying to curate my own mom style, I discovered the void for a onestop shop for stylish moms to find the looks they love, want and need. MORGAN HUTCHINSON |

You started the company with your husband— tell us what that was like. What’s

MINI |

it like working together on the business front? Brett is a super supportive husband. In fact (and don’t tell him this), he should probably use the word “NO” with me more often! His support is a major driving force for me to keep going on the days when things feel impossible. MORGAN HUTCHINSON |

Why is BURU a go-to shop for moms and moms-to-be?

MINI |

There is a lot of noise online these days, so many options to shop and so many websites trying to gain a mom’s business everyday. BURU’s goal is to carefully curate a collection of styles from top MORGAN HUTCHINSON |

moisturizer, concealer, mascara, bronzer, red lipstick and a teasing comb. In terms of getting dressed quickly, I am a dress and jumpsuit kind of girl. When dressing the bump, what do you think is the biggest misconception or no-no?

MINI |

What do you think is key to creating the perfect summer look for a busy mom?

MINI |

I think you reserve the tent dress for the early months when the bump looks more like a beer gut. After it pops, I think it’s wise to wear more form-fitting styles. After the bump and boobs pop, a voluminous dress can actually make a mom look bigger. MORGAN HUTCHINSON |

A mom can easily tackle summer style with white jeans, a chambray shirt, comfy sandals, a little white dress and lots of Lemlem, Mara Hoffman and Ace & Jig! MORGAN HUTCHINSON |

M I N I s u m m e r ‘15

Some days, yes. Some days, no. The days I get it right are the days I remember to compartmentalize and truly give my all to the task at hand. While there are times when multi-tasking works, I find that when it comes to your little ones, it’s important to be present when they are present and find childcare when it’s time to put your nose to the grindstone and work. Mompreneurs are on the move! What advice would you give to other moms who are looking at starting their own businesses?

MINI |

I would say START! Planning is important, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet. You can’t learn from mistakes without making them. And when you do, don’t give up! Believe me, you will want to, but that’s when it’s time to evolve, hustle and keep going. MORGAN HUTCHINSON |

THE SIMPLE LIFE PACIFIC NORTHWEST BASED MOM

Katie Richardson set out to simplify parenthood with her husband, Ben. Together, the two founded Puj—a brand that has already become a household name in the parenting industry— to support others with littles, their own family and with the hopes of supporting their community of Vancouver, Washington in the future.

Richardson and her husband, Ben, with their four children.

ou founded Puj with your husband, Ben, and you’ve been on a mission to simplify parenthood ever since. Tell us about the “Aha!” moment that started Puj.

I was a young stay-at-home mom who was frequently frustrated with complicated baby gear. So rather than wait for someone to design a better solution, I decided why not me? I have a BFA in Product Design and I love problem solving. Bath time was my biggest frustration so I decided to start there. Set-up was complicated and my son always cried through the whole bath. I knew there had to be a better way! I still remember giving the first prototype to a friend to test on her newborn. That look on her face when I asked for it back said it all. I knew the design was something that every new mom could not live without! KATIE RICHARDSON |

ABOVE

What was the first item in your product line?

MINI |

Richardson and her husband, Ben, at Puj HQ in Vancouver.

The Puj Tub. We premiered it at a Trade Show in 2009. After a series of hurdles and mishaps leading up to the show, we ended up knocking it out of the park and were the star! Every buyer who walked into our booth placed an order. It was an amazing year where we went from essentially $0 in sales to over $1,000,000. The many years of hard work and sacrifice had finally paid off. I knew there was a light at the end of the tunnel and the daily dinners of rice and beans were coming to an end. KATIE RICHARDSON |

M I N I s u m m e r ‘15

We’re excited to be taking a peek at Puj HQ! Can you give us a rundown of the space and what happens here?

MINI |

What inspires you to simplify parenthood and create new items?

MINI |

This building has a lot of meaning to me. It was built by a man who as a young polish immigrant turned junk into a multi-million dollar business. My wish is to provide opportunities for my family and employees to learn and grow. The space is very open and raw with lots of character throughout like natural sky-lights and tall green barn doors. This is where everything Puj happens. Design, photography, prototyping, shipping, customer service, sales meetings, mommy focus groups [and] kid testing. KATIE RICHARDSON |

Life as a parent can easily turn into chaos. At Puj, we work really hard to strip away the extras so you are only left with the essential. Our products are intuitive and easy to use. I want to wow people with the brilliance of our design. Because ultimately, the time we have with our children is so fleeting. I want people to relax and enjoy these precious moment with their baby. KATIE RICHARDSON |

For instance, what inspired you to create the new Phillup cups (which we love!)?

MINI |

You’re dedicated to getting involved in your community in Vancouver, WA. How is Puj serving the community?

MINI |

I noticed my kids frequently asking for a glass of water throughout the day. With four kids, that is a lot of cups to be filling up! Children love helping themselves, but with cups high up in the cupboard it’s hard to get their own. Now with Phillup, the cup is hung at kid height and they can now get their own water and keep their glass in a place they know they can find it. KATIE RICHARDSON |

My plan is to expand Puj into a community business as well. I hope to provide a space where experts in many fields can come and teach “simplifying parenthood” on a new level. KATIE RICHARDSON |

As the parents of four kids, how do you make sure you’re keeping all of the plates spinning?

MINI |

Finding balance is possible but it takes great focus and dedication. First and foremost, I take care of my spiritual needs with scripture reading and prayer. Then I take care of myself so I have the energy and focus my family and Puj deserves. This means daily exercise, eating fresh, organic foods, drinking lots of water and dedicating myself to a solid night’s sleep. Those things right there are the recipe to success in my book! KATIE RICHARDSON |

M I N I s u m m e r ‘15

“Life as a PARENT CAN EASILY TURN into chaos. At Puj we work really hard to strip away the extras so you are only left with the essential.”

How would you define your parenting style?

MINI |

Parenting is full of small teaching opportunities. I try to instill principles of truth in my kids so as they grow up they can make their own decisions and govern themselves. We all seek independence in one form or another, so I try to give my kids the tools they need to make good choices in life and find happiness. KATIE RICHARDSON |

As an entrepreneur, is that drive something you hope to instill in your kids?

MINI |

I can already see the entrepreneurial spirit in all of my kids (11,9,6 and 20 months). The world has changed drastically and everyone needs to be entrepreneurial minded wherever they work. I hope to give my kids the faith and confidence they need to find joy and adventure. KATIE RICHARDSON |

Let’s talk gifts for new moms! For those heading to baby showers this summer, what Puj products would make the best gifts?

MINI |

Hands down, our Puj Splash is the best baby shower gift! It includes our travel tub, our clever infant towel, three of the softest wash cloths and hooks to hang it all. KATIE RICHARDSON |
