INSIDE THIS WEEK: Covid vaccines can be booked for 12-15 year olds PARENTS in Sefton can now book Covid-19 vaccinations online for their 12-15 year old children. People will be able to go online and check the National Booking Service to see if their local site has appointments to vaccinate children and young people. The booking service will provide an additional option for parents to book a vaccine for their child, alongside the schools programme which has already vaccinated children in more than one-third of the region’s schools. If a child has already been invited through their school but hasn’t yet been vaccinated, they do not need to act on their invite through the national booking system unless parents wish to get their child vaccinated outside of school. Parents and guardians will be advised to attend vaccination sites with their children if they want them to get jabbed outside of school hours and consent will be sought on the day. Parents and young people are being asked to read the patient information which will be included in the letter in advance of arriving for their appointment. This can also be accessed online. Children will be able to get vaccinated at a number of vaccination centres, GP practices, pharmacies and hospital hubs, with plans to bring further sites online over the coming weeks. Parents are being advised to keep checking the NHS.uk website as more appointments and sites become available. Letters will be sent to parents and guardians of children aged 12-15 over the coming weeks inviting them to book the vaccine online or by calling 119 as the NHS Covid19 vaccination programme continues at pace. Parents or guardians will be able to book their child in for a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine through the national online booking service or they can ring 119.

Adam Kent, 25, is a huge Reds fan who has Duchenne Muscular dystrophy, which causes progressive muscle degeneration. The Champion reported earlier this year how he started a £50,000 fundraising campaign to buy a ‘Jaco robotic arm’ which would give him better movement and allow him to lift the Reds scarf above his head. However, last week he was told by doctors that he and his 26-year-old brother, Alix, who has the same condition, both have severe heart failure. The brothers have now been told they

are each living like a “shortened time bomb” as Adam described it in a social media post. He said: “Even though our future has always been uncertain, we have basically been told it truly is a matter of time, we are living our life on a shortened time bomb. SEFTON Council has issued an Approval Notice for a massive development in Maghull which would see the knocking down of existing buildings to the north of School Lane and the building of 855 homes, an older persons housing scheme, a mixed-use local centre and public open space. The application was approved at a Planning Committee in March 2021 subject to conditions and a legal agreement. The Approval Notice is also subject to conditions. An application relating to the development site to the south for 841 homes was allowed on appeal on February 22 of this year. Countryside Properties and Persimmon Homes were given the go-ahead for the development, despite objections from Bill Esterson MP and local councillors Patrick McKinley and Yvonne Sayers. They say a road, which would connect the site direct to the new M58 Junction 1, should be built to

reduce the impact of site traffic on residents living nearby. The leader of Sefton Council, Councillor Ian Maher, was critical of the proposals when they were received by the council in 2017. At the time he said: “Sadly, there has been no meaningful dialogue with communities or local councillors before these plans were submitted, which smacks to me of arrogance and a desire to ride roughshod over the views of local people.” According to the Land East of Maghull Masterplan Document, the “vision for Land East of Maghull is to create a place for people to live, work and enjoy.” This includes: “Developing a broad mix of housing types and tenures to cater for a range of local needs, while maintaining the character of the local area; providing a high quality modern business park creating new jobs for Sefton; catering for people’s dayto-day needs with a range of local retail, commercial and community facilities; and encouraging recreation and healthy living through the creation of a new park, areas of open space and footpaths/cycleways.”

Blind football team want more players A FOOTBALL club based in Sefton for blind and partially sighted players wants to expand and find more people to get involved. Merseyside Blind and Visually Impaired FC is self-run club who play at Netherton Activity Centre. They have both a blind and partially sighted team and travel across the country for league matches. They also travel to take part in international tournaments, including in Belgium and Germany, where they face off against teams from around the world.

The club was formed in 2010 by Ray Turner and Matt Cliffe and volunteers who run the club told the Champion they only have one message for anyone thinking about taking part in football: “if you want to play you should because you can achieve so much.” Head coach Steven Cushion said: “We are such a close knit group and really support each other. “We have sessions every Saturday and welcome anyone from aged seven and upwards. “If anyone would want to get involved, email merseyblindfc@

gmail.com or contact the club through our social media pages.” Merseyside Blind and Visually Impaired FC is a Charter Standard Club and compete in the Blind Football League and the Partially Sighted Football League. Some of the rules to blind football include all players, except for the goalkeeper, wearing a blindfold. The ball has been modified to make a jingling or rattling sound and players are required to say “voy” or “go”, or something similar when going for the ball to alert the other players about their position.

Comic book writer Tim to have book published about his remarkable life A COMIC book writer from Crosby has turned the storyline on himself with a new illustrated publication about his life. Tim Quinn worked as a writer and illustrator for Marvel Comics on storylines for the likes of The X-Men, Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk and Thor. Tim, 68, has now collaborated with Cumbrian author and artist Iman Kakai-Lazell on a custom-made book called Tim Quinn - Confessions of a Superhero. Iman interviewed with Tim and gathered images from his life. She then manipulated and reinterpreted words and photographs to create a stunning visual journey which spotlights Tim’s life and career. Tim said: “Iman has created a beautiful piece of work. I wish my grandparents and parents were alive to see it as they feature in its pages. “I’d describe it like a ‘life-flashes before me book’ which has moments from the ups and downs of my life. She has taken my life and turned it into a work of art. Which is quite extraordinary.” Inman added: “Tim has had a remarkable life and I wanted to shine a light on the man behind some of Marvel Comics most-loved superheroes. “Tim has been able to express himself in a completely different way. And then I’ve been able to add my interpretation to each page. “This work pushes the boundaries of what we consider as a book. I hope people will love reading it as much as I have loved creating it.”

Activities coordinator secures nomination for national care award Report by Tom Martin A WATERLOO cook who was promoted at his care home because he was so helpful with the residents has been nominated for a national award. Dave Valentine, 35, started doing shifts as a cook at Palmyra, on Great Georges Road, in 2017 but when manager Stephen Watson saw how well he worked with residents, he was asked to head up the activities team. Three years later, Stephen says his hunch about Dave has been proved correct after he was nominated for a Caring UK Award, which celebrates the best of social care. Dave’s friendly and easy going style has seen many residents at Palmyra start to try new things and improve their confidence. A male resident who previously didn’t want to leave the house now regularly travels to local beauty spots to take photographs, 82-year-old Barbara has discovered a love for digital drawing and 92-year-old Stan has learned to video call his 80-year-old brother. Always putting other people first, when Dave’s wedding and honeymoon were cancelled due to the pandemic, he instead spent the weekend supporting residents on their new garden project. Registered manager Stephen Watson said: “Dave’s activities programme is designed with residents’ individual needs in mind and planned via regular meetings. “Where possible, Dave finds activities that residents would like to do within the community to help them to retain their sense of belonging. “He worked hard to keep everyone entertained and in contact with loved ones throughout lockdowns, providing a packed activity schedule including smoothie making, virtual international zoo visits,

video games, all-ability exercise classes and colouring activities. “Despite a very difficult couple of years, Dave’s compassion and dedication have meant that Palmyra has managed to maintain its positive and welcoming atmosphere.” Palmyra is operated by adult health & social care charity Making Space and is home to 13 adults who have mental health needs. It is rated ‘good’ by social care watchdog the CQC. Dave will find out if he has won the activities team of the year award at a gala dinner at Athena in Leicester on Thursday, December 2.

Radio 1 DJ Adele praises NHS ‘heroes’ after revealing that she has bowel cancer Report by Danielle Thompson RADIO 1 presenter Adele Roberts has announced she is to undergo surgery for bowel cancer and has thanked listeners for their support. The 42-year-old, who is a former student of Merchant Taylors’ School in Crosby said she was diagnosed at the start of the month and would have surgery to remove a tumour this week. Adele, who hosts Radio 1’s Weekend Breakfast, said that she was due to undergo surgery on Monday, October 25 to remove her tumour, then she can ‘see if I need any more treatment or if the cancer has spread.’ In the post, which included an image of her giving a thumbs-up in a hospital gown, she revealed that her ‘outlook is positive’ and urged others to see their doctor if they have any symptoms. Adele, who grew up in Southport, first found fame after appearing on the 2002 series of Channel 4’s Big Brother, and later in I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!, before going on to forge a successful radio career. In the post that she shared, she said that she had struggled for years with her digestion and after a conversation with her father, she went for a check-up and was ‘quickly ’ dia-

gnosed. She revealed that if she had delayed, she ‘might not be so lucky. She posted: “As I’ve learned over the last few weeks, there’s no ‘normal’ with cancer. Sadly it can affect anyone, at any age, anytime. It doesn’t discriminate. Early detection can save your life.” Adele praised her family, her longterm partner, Kate Holderness, the ‘NHS heroes’ as well as her Radio 1 bosses and listeners. She wrote: “Sending everyone so much love and positivity for the week ahead. “Thank you to my family, words cannot describe how much you have helped me through these last few weeks. You saved me. You are my angels. “I didn’t know I’d be writing something like this. The hardest thing wasn’t even finding out I had cancer, it was telling my family. It broke my heart. “Thinking of you if you are going through something similar and sending love to your family and friends. “Thank you to everyone who’s shared their journey online or publicly. You’ve brought me so much comfort and helped me through those sleepless nights. I hope this post can do the same for someone else. “I’m ready to do this… Time’s up cancer… Time to go.”

She added: “This matter remains under constant review and is also monitored through weekly licensing meetings. Members of former church donate £4,000 to Waterloo in Sierra Leone MEMBERS of a former church in Waterloo have donated £4,000 to a local charity that helps poor people in Sierra Leone. Officers carried out ‘open land searches’ in Bowersdale Park, in Seaforth, after they received reports from local residents that gangs were hiding weapons in the park. A police spokesperson said: “Matrix Disruption Officers have carried out

A VET who followed in the footsteps of Forrest Gump by recreating the character’s epic run was in Crosby Village to sign copies of his new book. In 2016, Rob Pope began a 422-day, 15,700-mile run comprising more than four complete crossings of the United States. He conquered the incredible feat after being inspired to trace the route run by Tom Hanks’ fictional character in the 1994 film Forrest Gump. Forrest famously set off from his home in Alabama and ran across America all the way to Santa Monica, California. He then ran back, eventually making between four to five journeys across the country in total before he stopped. Many athletes had recreated one ‘crossing’ - from Alabama to California – but no one had ever done all five with some speculating whether it was even possible. Incredibly, Rob managed to do it and ran 15,700 miles, which is more than the distance of 15,248 miles Forrest was supposed to have run in the classic film. Rob, who quit his job as a vet to take on the challenge, raised approximately £38,000 for the charities Peace Direct and the World Wildlife Fund. He was at Pritchard’s Bookshop in Crosby Village last week to sign copies of his book, ‘Becoming Forrest’, which tells the story of his epic run.

A 37-YEAR-OLD man from Maghull has been charged with conspiracy to supply Class A and B drugs. On Sunday, October 17 officers arrested Michael Martin of Dover Road on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A and B drugs after his vehicle was stopped by police on Queens Drive in Liverpool. On Monday, October 18 he was charged with conspiracy to supply cocaine and heroin and conspiracy to supply firearms. He has been remanded in custody and appeared at Wirral Magistrates adult remand court. The charge forms part of the Merseyside Police response to Operation Venetic: a national investigation into the use of encrypted mobile devices, commonly referred to as Encrochat.

Cat owner reunited with missing pet after seven years!

Report by Henry James A CAT owner from Aintree who never gave up hope of finding her missing moggy had her faith rewarded when he turned up seven years after he vanished without a trace. Kelly Pomfret received kittens Simba and Buttons as a birthday present in 2013, and they soon became much-loved members of the family. But in 2015 they both went missing, causing heartbreak for Kelly, who spent her days putting up posters and advertising on social media in the hope that someone would spot them. Both cats were microchipped and it was because of the chip that she learned poor Buttons had been found dead, having apparently ingested a poison. Kelly eventually got another cat, Miles, and added a further four cats to her brood over the years, all of them rescue animals. Then in September this year, she got the unexpected news that Simba was alive and well. It transpired that Simba had been living with a lady in Liverpool city centre and had come in to the care of Cats Protection’s Warrington Adoption Centre through its Cat Guardians service. Cat owners who sign up to the scheme are given peace of mind that their pet will be cared for after their death at one of the charity’s branches or centres. As a matter of protocol, when Simba arrived at the centre he was scanned for a microchip and Kelly’s details popped up.

Kelly said: “I opened up my email to find that he had been handed in and seven years later I was reunited with Simba. I was so very happy and over the moon. My prayers had been answered; the hope and faith I had held on to for so long had paid off. I now have my baby home! “Simba has settled in really well, he never forgot me. He has been very affectionate and even gets on with my dog, Prince. He loves his Dreamies, strokes and cuddles. “I would never have got him back if he had not been microchipped and I would encourage all pet owners to get them chipped, and keep your details up to date. “If your pet does go missing, however hard or painful it may be, never give up hope or faith. Never stop looking and never stop praying because every so often miracles do happen.”

I have so much admiration for Jack is a real vaccination centre volunteers community hero The pages of the Champion have recorded a number of issues regarding the lack of support given by GPs during the pandemic. I recently visited a vaccination centre to get a booster jab. The attitude I witnessed there was as far from the experience in dealing with a GP as it is possible. The people doing the vaccinations were very professional and approachable. They are professionals who have given time away from their own discipline to support this vitally important work. None of them are on a doctor’s salary and they spend all day in close contact with lots of people, in some cases working in small enclosed spaces. The only PPE they have is a flimsy plastic apron, mask and gloves. Making the process run smoothly are the volunteers.

I’m sure I'm just one of many readers to have read of the illegal demolishing of Glenthorne with anger and despair. This lovely old house was part of the Conservation Area which is there to preserve the history and the character of such a much-loved part of Blundellsands Sefton Council will no doubt investigate, but I doubt the owner will worry too much, and a planning application to build umpteen new homes in its place giving him a massive profit might well be on its way. I wonder if the council could urgently consider a motion to prevent this happening by perhaps ruling that the land should not be built upon for a period of say 30 years, this preventing any such profiteering? I was given Jack’s name by a friend, who knows him through the British Legion. Jack came to my home and helped me fill in the forms, then took me in his car to two medicals. He wouldn’t take a penny off

They give their time unpaid and are also in close contact with everyone visiting the vaccination centre. The PPE they rely on is a mask. I cannot stress enough my admiration and appreciation of the work all these people do. The responsibility for both vaccinations, booster and flu jab have been delegated out to these vaccination centres and chemists. Previously the majority of vaccinations were the responsibility of the GP practice. My experience has served to increase my disgust with GPs and their attitude. It is time they took a long hard look at themselves and admit that many of them have no real interest in their patients, putting themselves first.

STAFF at a Crosby school went the extra mile for charity by taking on a running challenge after being inspired by a pupil who has leukaemia. A group of nine staff members from Holy Family High School took on varying distances at last weekend’s Rock ‘n’ Roll event in Liverpool, with some taking on the 10k, half marathon and full marathon. The idea came from PE teacher and Year 10 progress leader, Will Nutman, who has been supporting a child in his year group who is having chemotherapy treatment for leukaemia at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. He said: “I wanted to support this boy through his treatment. If he can go through such a difficult and life changing three years, then the staff here could

run a few miles to raise money and awareness for the wonderful staff and children on the ward. “This is why our school is amazing. Staff, student and pupils and parents come together to support anyone who needs it. “It is a privilege to be part of this community and to raise funds for such a worthy cause.” The staff were also inspired by the fundraising of two boys in Year 8 at Holy Family, who between them have raised well over £10,000 for Alder Hey. Holy Family headteacher Matt Symes, added: “Alder Hey does such tremendous work and touches so many lives that it’s wonderful to be able to give something back. A PENSIONERS’ group based at Maghull Baptist Church in Hall Lane is to close at the end of this month after 20 years. The group is called Wednesday Focus as it holds meet-ups each Wednesday from noon to 2pm, but the last one will be held at the end of this month. Group leader Alan Bentley, who set up the group with his wife, said he is sad it will close but there are no longer people able to run it. It is a community group for pensioners to come together and have

refreshments, and take part in activities like quizzes. Guest speakers have also given talks to the group on a variety of issues, such as safety in the home. Group leader Alan Bentley said: “My wife and I set it up and it enabled people to make new friends. It has been an outlet for pensioners. “It is very sad it is closing. There will be a blank space on a Wednesday now. “I want to thank everyone who has attended over the past 20 years. Their support has been appreciated.”

Whooper Swans now back from Iceland At Martin Mere, in October, we always celebrate the return of the pink-footed geese but, as we head into November, we look forward to welcoming back our whooper swans. The swans usually start arriving in large numbers in the first half of November and build to a peak in January and February. This year, some of the whoopers arrived earlier than usual and we have had up to 150 birds for the last three weeks. Just like the pink-footed geese, the whooper swans that winter in West Lancashire also come from Iceland. They are cousins of our resident Mute Swan but, instead of having a red bill, have a yellow bill, with the patch of yellow differing between individuals. It is the different patches of yellow which has enabled us to identify individual birds by recording their bill patterns. This allowed their movements, to and from Iceland, to be monitored year to year and also allowed for family ties to be identified between birds. Nowadays, the birds are studied through the use of plastic leg rings, printed with large numbers. Our monitoring staff and volunteers keep track of the birds and enter the ring numbers into a database for record keeping. Visitors to Martin Mere can also make use of the database in our

Discovery Hide, where an interactive display allows visitors to enter the ring numbers they can see. Once a ring number is entered, details of the bird’s life history are displayed; including when the bird first came to Martin Mere, which bird it is mated with and how many offspring it has produced over the years. It is really easy to read the rings, especially when they come right up to the hides at our daily swan feeds, which start at 3pm every day and which are one of the best winter wildlife spectacles in the UK. In other bird news, visitors to our Bird Fair turned up a number of good birds including snow goose, great egret, bittern, willow tit and brambling, as well as the continued starling murmuration and the pink-footed geese coming in to roost. Both the bittern and the great egret were even seen within the fenced are of the Martin Mere wildfowl collection in the Wild Walk area. This is a first for the site and, with little egret and grey heron, now takes the number of species of herons seen in the grounds to four.

Partnership aims to see both clubs grow by sharing best practice Report by Tom Martin MARINE FC has formed a partnership with American soccer team Maryland Bobcats in a deal which aims to see both clubs grow in future. Club bosses have agreed a ‘formal partnership’ with the Bobcats, based in Montgomery County, Maryland, in a deal which will mean a “sharing of best practice of both clubs.” This will range from player development to stadium and community development, and it will also allow mutual opportunities for the furthering of education of players and staff. The Bobcats, founded in 2009, play in the National Independent Soccer Association, the third tier of American soccer. Annoyingly, it was only officially unveiled by Land Rover late last night after this week’s Champion headed to the printers, and all the chaps behind the new fifth-generation off-roader could offer beforehand was a deliberately blurry teaser shot that confirms what you already knew. That it looks an awful lot like a Range Rover. From what I’ve gleaned from online leaks it’s business-as-usual. Evolution rather than revolution on the outside, more tech on the inside, and underpinnings that are – surprise, surprise – far more electric-friendly from the off. It’s also widely rumoured to have a clever new system that lets the rear wheels do some of the steering, which should help make it feel far more nimble on the road, and more talented off it. There’s also no word on prices yet, but if it’s anything more than the outgoing car’s £83,525 entry price then I reckon it’s got some unlikely competition from another car revealed, in a stroke of PR genius, the day
