Ball Python Facts:

COMMON NAMES:

Python regius, commonly known as the ball python, has several other common names, including:

  1. Royal python
  2. Ball python
  3. African ball python
  4. West African royal python
  5. Ghanaian ball python
  6. Guinea royal python

These are some of the most widely used common names for Python regius, though there may be regional variations or colloquial names used in specific areas.

FUN FACTS: The name "ball python" stems from the animal's inclination to curl into a ball when stressed or frightened. Conversely, the moniker "royal python" is derived from historical practices where African rulers adorned themselves with these pythons as jewelry. As with all pythons, they are nonvenomous constrictors. As of my last update in January 2022, there were over 5,300 recognized ball python morphs, and breeders continue to develop new ones through selective breeding.

HABITAT: Ball pythons inhabit grasslands, open forests, and areas with sufficient cover, often near bodies of water to regulate their temperature during hot weather.

BREEDING: Females are oviparous, typically laying 3 to 11 rather large, leathery eggs. They diligently coil around their clutches until the eggs hatch, which usually takes about two months.

BEHAVIOR: Adult ball pythons are solitary and nocturnal creatures. They seek refuge in dark hiding spots during the day and emerge at night to pursue their prey. When handled regularly, they exhibit docile behavior, particularly in captivity.
