Can betta fish drown?
by Anonymous

Yes, actually! Betta need to breathe from the surface in order to get enough oxygen intake. So technically, they are able to drown if they cannot reach air.

New girl! :D

I won this dumbo yellow salamander girl at the National Betta Show today. Man, they had so many gorgeous fish. One of them went for £70! I wanted to bid on some giants but they averaged nearly £40.

I’m so excited about this girl. I was in a bidding war with someone else but managed to get her for £12, which is nice. So many other girlies went for £3 or £5, but me and that other person wanted this one in particular, hah. She has an unusual tail type but it makes her look all the more spunky. I really like her outgoing attitude.

I have her set up in a heated box now until I get home tomorrow. I hope she’ll be fine overnight and for the trip home. I have a name in mind but I don’t want to officially name her until she makes it back home safely.

I can’t wait to see that yellow and blue pop once she’s settled and relaxed.

Oh, and also got a couple of assassin snails, too, haha, for the new girl’s tank since there’s a massive explosion of pest snails right now.

I put my female betta into a divided 40g tank, heated and filtered with a male on the other side she has become lethergic, her tummy is swollen and she won't eat. What do you recommend I do?

We need a little more info about water values and such to answer that!

I recently got a Walmart betta as a gift, and since I wasn't expecting it, I had to put him in a 2.5 gallon tank. is there anything else I can get to make such a small tank better for him? I've already got a heater, a filter, and plenty of hides

You need a water testing kit to keep an eye on the water values while the tank is cycling! More about cycling an aquarium can be found on our page if you’re not sure how it works. It’s crucial to keep the betta alive!

If doing a fishless cycle, do you need to dechlorinate the water as you cycle? Or could you wait until the final large water change to dechlorinate it?
by Anonymous

The chlorine/etc will kill your cycling bacteria, so do it as you go!

I got the boys a tank today with a heater and a filter. I’m so happy that I’ve finally had the chance to do this, I’ve been in a bad financial state and have tried my best to care for these guys ( frequent water changes, making sure the water stayed at an ok temperature) but yesterday was my birthday and I came into some money, enabling me to be able to get a better environment for my babies. Can wait to move them in and see how much better they do ( I did also buy tank dividers but they are off camera )
