Introduction

At the time of writing, the Super Schwartzi Corydoras, or CW028,  is still awaiting its official scientific description; this behemoth is at the larger end of the Corydoras spectrum and commands a higher price tag than many other Corydoras.

This impressive catfish distinguishes itself not only through its large size but also through its contrasting body pattern and elongated anterior portion of its dorsal fin, adorned with a vibrant golden yellow hue, making it a standout feature of this particular fish.
As with almost all Corydoras, the Super Schwartzi are sociable by nature and thrive best when kept in a group rather than as a lone individual. In our experience, we have found they also enjoy the company of other similar-sized corys, such as the Colossus Corydoras or the very similar and often confused Pulcher Cory.

Super Schwartzi Corys will coexist with smaller, peaceful fish species like Pencilfish, Tetras, Rasboras, and Barbs. However, it's essential to avoid placing them with larger, aggressive fish to ensure their safety and well-being.

These fish exhibit a shy, retiring demeanour, frequently seeking refuge out of sight for extended periods. Therefore, creating an environment with ample cave-like structures and shaded areas is crucial, offering them the perfect retreats to withdraw to at their discretion.

Sexual Dimorphism

Identifying the sex of mature Super Schwartzi Corydoras can be done with relative ease. The key is to observe their physical characteristics: mature females usually have a fuller and more rounded shape, especially noticeable when they are gravid with eggs, making them appear somewhat larger than males.

Natural Habitat

In the wild, the Super Schwartzi Corydoras can be found in the Mucuim River, a tributary of the Purus River in Brazil, South America, where they favour gentle currents and clear waters, surrounded by a natural canopy of overhanging vegetation and submerged branches.

This serene setting offers numerous hiding places and sanctuaries, perfectly catering to the tranquil nature of these catfish as they seek shelter amidst their foraging activities on the riverbed.

Breeding

Breeding Super Schwartzi Corydoras in a home aquarium has been successfully achieved. Mature pairs can be stimulated to spawn through the implementation of a substantial, slightly cooler water change. During the breeding process, the pair adopts the classic "T position," where the male fertilizes the adhesive eggs held between the female's pelvic fins.

These eggs are then affixed to various surfaces within the aquarium, such as plants, decor, or the tank's sides. This spawning cycle may repeat. To safeguard against potential fungal issues, some aquarists opt to introduce a small amount of methylene blue to the breeding tank.

Typically, the eggs hatch within 3 to 5 days, giving rise to tiny fry that require finely powdered initial foods. After a few more days, they can graduate to newly hatched brine shrimp for sustenance.

Diet & Feeding

Super Schwartzi Corydoras are omnivorous, and although not picky eaters in the home aquarium, their natural diet in the wild consists of a diverse range of foods, including small aquatic invertebrates, insects, worms, and plant debris.

For their well-being in captivity, it's recommended to feed a balanced mix of high-quality sinking pellets or flakes alongside the occasional treat of freeze dried, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter.

Ensuring a diet that includes protein- and plant-based foods is vital for their overall health & vitality.
