Introduction

The Six-banded Distichodus (Distichodus sexfasciatus) is a  captivating fish that is sought after by advanced aquarium enthusiasts. These fish boast a unique appearance and require special attention regarding their care. Despite the challenges of keeping Six-banded Distichodus, they remain popular in the hobby due to their unique appearance. Six-banded Distichodus necessitates careful consideration regarding tankmates and maintenance, making it a captivating yet challenging addition to the world of ornamental fish keeping.

The behaviour of Six-banded Distichodus within the aquarium setting can manifest with a degree of unpredictability. While some individuals may coexist harmoniously with robust tankmates, others may exhibit complete intolerance toward them. In more spacious aquaria, juvenile specimens can be maintained in groups; however, it is noteworthy that as they mature, intraspecific aggression tends to intensify, necessitating the separation of individuals for their own welfare.

Consequently, it is often advisable to house a solitary specimen per tank, facilitating its growth alongside other sizable fish that possess the capacity to independently ensure their well-being. Nonetheless, vigilant observation remains essential. Potential compatible tankmates may include other large characins (with the exception of other Distichodus species), substantial Cyprinids, sizable armoured Catfish, and similar robust aquatic inhabitants.

The Six-banded Distichodus, a sizeable characin species, necessitates an aquarium with a minimum length of 6 feet, accompanied by robust filtration capabilities. Given their rapid growth during the juvenile stage, it is imperative to provide ample space right from the outset. Ideally, the tank should offer an expansive open swimming area at the front, complemented by strategically placed hiding spots amidst smooth rocks and driftwood towards the rear. Substrate composition, whether gravel or sand, is relatively inconsequential.

It is noteworthy that these fish possess an omnivorous diet and may consume soft-leaved plants, making them less suited for planted aquariums. Nonetheless, resilient plant species that can be affixed to decor elements, such as Anubias sp, Bolbitis sp, and Java Fern (Microsorum), are often overlooked but contribute to the tank's aesthetic appeal. Filtration should be both efficient and judicious, with a moderate water flow and adequate oxygenation. Given their natural habitat in riverine environments, maintaining a low nitrate level is essential, necessitating regular partial water changes to minimize organic waste accumulation. Furthermore, they are inclined to jump, and a strong, tight-fitting lid is essential.

The body of Six-banded Distichodus is high-backed, and their colour varies from reddish-brown to reddish-yellow. In addition, these fish have an elongated, laterally flattened head, six dark vertical bands, bright red fins, and a distinctive conical nose shape. Although much of this colour and pattern fade as they mature, these fish remain a fascinating addition to any aquarium for those willing to provide the necessary care.

Sexual Dimorphism

Distinguishing between a male and female Six-banded Distichodus can be quite challenging as there are no apparent external differences between the sexes, making it impossible to differentiate between the two solely based on physical appearance.

Breeding

Regrettably, to the best of our knowledge, successful captive breeding of the Six-banded Distichodus has yet to be achieved. This may be attributed to their size and compatibility issues, as these fish do not tend to get along particularly well as juveniles and certainly not as adults. Additionally, reproducing this species in captivity is a daunting task, as they, like other large Characins, undergo a migratory phase before spawning that is challenging to replicate in a captive environment.

Diet & Feeding

The Six-banded Distichodus is a versatile feeder with a natural diet that includes crustaceans, insects, worms, and plant matter. In a captive setting, these fish will happily consume suitably sized pellets and Spirulina flakes. It is also highly recommended to supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as shellfish, mussels, earthworms, and prawns.

To keep these fish healthy, a significant proportion of vegetable matter should be included in their diet; blanched spinach, processed peas, lettuce, and blanched zucchini are all excellent choices for providing these fish with the essential nutrients they need to thrive. Whether you are a seasoned aquarist or a newcomer to the hobby, ensuring your Six-banded Distichodus receives a well-balanced and nutritious diet is crucial to their overall well-being.
