Salween Rock Catfish - Erethistes filamentosus : Complete Fish Profile & Care Guide
Table of contents
Introduction
Salween Rock Catfish (Erethistes filamentosus) are known for their tranquil demeanour and ease of care, often spending substantial periods concealed within the substrate or seeking refuge in caves. Though relatively uncommon in the trade, they present a captivating addition to an Asian stream community aquarium, provided they can be acquired.
Optimal tankmates for Salween Rock Catfish include other diminutive species that thrive in fast-flowing waters, such as Danios, Rasboras, Devarios, and Loaches. It is advisable, however, to exercise caution when selecting bottom-dwelling companions, as the Catfish may struggle to compete for food in a crowded environment. Additionally, the species can display a degree of territorial behaviour towards its own kind, necessitating the provision of individual shelters within the tank.
To emulate their natural habitat, the aquarium should feature a decor of smooth rocks and driftwood pieces, with a sandy substrate to accommodate their burrowing tendencies. Excellent water oxygenation and quality are imperative for the well-being of these Catfish, and it is preferable to maintain a cooler water temperature within the tropical aquarium setup.
Due to their nocturnal nature, bright lighting may discourage sightings of the fish, making subdued lighting a better choice. Providing some plant cover within the tank will be appreciated by the Salween Rock Catfish.
The dorsal and body colouration of this species ranges from dark chestnut brown to light chocolate brown, marked by a distinctive mottling pattern comprising numerous smaller, irregular darker brown patches.
The ventral surfaces of the belly and head contrast with a lighter brown hue. Notably, two slender, irregular light brown bars adorn the body, with the first forming a chevron-shaped pattern situated between the bases of the dorsal and adipose fins, while the second, more pronounced, occurs on the caudal peduncle.
The dorsal fin exhibits a mottled dark brown hue, interrupted only by a thin hyaline distal margin. Similarly, the pectoral fin displays a dark brown colouration, featuring a slender hyaline distal margin and, in some instances, either a small ovoid hyaline spot or a crescentic median hyaline band along the middle third of the fin.
The pelvic and anal fins possess a translucent appearance, complemented by dark brown bases and subdistal stripes. The adipose fin aligns with the body colouration, presenting a lighter-coloured distal margin.
The caudal fin predominantly appears hyaline, characterized by an irregular W-shaped band subdistally, while small dark brown flecks are evenly distributed throughout the fin. Some individuals may also display two small light brown patches at the bases of their caudal fin lobes.

Sexual Dimorphism
Distinguishing between male and female Salween Rock Catfish can pose a considerable challenge. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that mature females generally exhibit a slightly broader physique compared to their male counterparts.

Natural Habitat
The Salween Rock Catfish is native and confined to the River drainages of Ataran, Sittang, and Salween in Myanmar and Thailand, situated in Southeast Asia. This species is known to thrive in habitats characterized by fast-flowing rivers featuring substrates of stony or sandy nature.
Breeding
While successful breeding of Salween Rock Catfish has been achieved in a domestic aquarium setting, regrettably, the accessible information pertaining to this subject remains limited or scarce.
Diet & Feeding
Feeding Salween Rock Catfish is relatively straightforward, as they are not considered challenging in this regard. In their natural habitat, their diet primarily comprises small invertebrates; however, within the confines of an aquarium, they readily accept a diverse array of small live, frozen foods like bloodworms and daphnia and dried foods. When maintaining an artificially illuminated tank, it is advisable to offer food after the lights have been turned off to ensure equitable access for all specimens.
