Redfin Tiger Loach - Syncrossus berdmorei : Complete Fish Profile & Care Guide

Table of contents

Introduction

The Redfin Tiger Loach (Syncrossus berdmorei) is a captivating freshwater fish species native to Southeast Asia. Renowned for its striking appearance and fascinating behaviour, Syncrossus berdmorei is a prized addition to aquariums among enthusiasts. Under optimal conditions, this particular Loach species can exhibit hardiness. However, due to their requirement for exceptionally clean water and possessing small body scales, they are not typically recommended for novice aquarists.

It is advisable to keep only one Redfin Tiger Loach per tank unless ample space is available for a group of five or more individuals. While larger groups and breaks in sight lines across the tank can help disperse aggression among the group, it does not guarantee peaceful interactions, especially considering their aggressive nature.

Careful consideration must be given when selecting tankmates, with only large, robust, fast-swimming species capable of holding their own being suitable companions. Even larger but placid species may fall victim to relentless bullying from these Loaches. Some aquarists opt to house multiple species of Syncrossus Loaches together, which can work well given there are several individuals of each species present. Additionally, certain Yasuhikotakia species of Loach coexist harmoniously with Syncrossus due to their similar combative behaviour and environmental requirements. The Redfin Tiger Loach tends to display belligerent behaviour and should not be housed with smaller or slow-moving, long-finned fish, as they may easily intimidate them or nip at their trailing fins.

It is imperative to introduce these loaches only to biologically mature aquariums with ample space and numerous hiding spots created with driftwood, smooth rocks, and varied substrate to prevent damage to their delicate sensory barbels. Dim lighting is preferred, and a securely covered tank is essential due to their propensity for jumping. Adequate filtration and oxygenation, along with regular partial water changes, are necessary to maintain optimal water quality, as these loaches are intolerant of organic pollutants.

The Redfin Tiger Loach has a brownish body colour and displays distinctive markings, including dark oval spots and dashes arranged horizontally along the dorsal half of the body. These fish also have prominent black stripes extending from the nose over the eyes and a vibrant red colouring in the fins and tail. Geographical variants may exhibit variations in colour intensity and pattern based on collection location and maturity.

Sexual Dimorphism

Distinguishing between male and female Redfin Tiger Loaches poses a challenge, although fully grown females typically exhibit a rounder abdomen compared to males.

Natural Habitat

The Redfin Tiger Loach originates from the regions of Thailand, Burma, and neighbouring areas of northeastern India, where it inhabits various river systems, including the Irrawaddy, Sittaung, and Salween Rivers. These loaches prefer habitats characterized by swiftly flowing, clear waters with high oxygen content, typically occupying areas near boulders and submerged trees over soft riverbeds.

These water bodies are often bordered by riparian vegetation, providing additional shelter and food sources. During the rainy season, marked by increased water depth and flow, as well as a decrease in water temperature, they engage in migratory behaviour, moving into flooded regions for spawning purposes.

Breeding

Limited information is available regarding the breeding behaviour of the Redfin Tiger Loach. This species has not been successfully bred in aquarium settings and is not commercially bred as of now. It is speculated to be a seasonal spawner in its natural habitat, potentially exhibiting migratory behaviour.

Diet & Feeding

In their natural habitat, the Redfin Tiger Loach predominantly consumes carnivorous fare, although it will opportunistically feed on vegetable matter, particularly soft-leaved aquatic plants. As omnivores, they exhibit a broad dietary spectrum, readily consuming various live and frozen foods, sinking pellets, and occasional algae from sinking tablets. These loaches also exhibit predatory behaviour towards snails within the tank environment.

Their adaptable palate makes them less selective eaters, readily consuming a diverse array of fare, including high-quality dried foods, live or frozen bloodworms, tubifex, and artemia. Additionally, they demonstrate a penchant for fresh fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, melon, blanched spinach, or zucchini. Given their predominantly bottom-dwelling nature, sinking food is essential, although occasional mid-tank feeding behaviour may also occur during meal times.
