Product Description

Acclaimed producers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise have re-teamed with director Takashi Shimizu and screenwriter Stephen Susco to present this heart-stopping sequel to the smash-hit thriller, The Grudge. When Aubrey Davis (Amber Tamblyn, TV's "Joan of Arcadia") learns her sister Karen (Sarah Michelle Geller) has been hospitalized, she immediately flies to Tokyo. Once there, she learns her sister's horrifying story and discovers that the fatal supernatural curse has been unleashed. Now, as the grudge spreads across the world, a new host of unsuspecting victims are about to become infected by the force that can't be stopped -- and won't be killed.

A solid sequel bringing fresher storytelling and more honed tactics.
4 Stars
A solid sequel bringing fresher storytelling and more honed tactics.
I’m just gonna’ come out and say it… I think this sequel was better than The Grudge (2004). The tactics and storytelling felt more honed; like comparing Evil Dead 2 (1987) to Evil Dead (1981). Its greatest victory is how the storytelling style deviates from part 1.“When someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage a curse is born. The curse gathers in that place of death. Those who encounter it will be consumed by its fury.”Picking up right where The Grudge (2004) ended, director Takashi Shimizu (Ju-on 1-2, The Grudge 1-2, Flight 7500) continues his Grudge saga with three linked stories about those unlucky enough to befall Kayako’s path. And like other direct sequels (e.g., A Nightmare on Elm Street parts 3-5, Friday the 13th parts IV-VI, Halloween I-II, Saw IV-VI), it is best watched shortly after seeing its predecessor to keep plotlines fresh.International high schooler students Allison (Arielle Kebbel; The Uninvited), Vanessa (Teresa Palmer; Lights Out, Warm Bodies, Wolf Creek) and Miyuki visit what’s left of The Grudge (2004) house, which is clearly still haunted by the angry spirit Kayako (Ju-on 1-2, Ju-on: The Grudge 1-2, The Grudge 1-2). When a prank (against one of the girls) goes awry, the evil follows the girls after they leave the cursed house.Across the globe in California, Aubrey (Amber Tamblyn; The Ring) travels to Tokyo to find her sister Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar; Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, The Grudge)—hospitalized since the events of The Grudge (2004). She, too, finds herself haunted beyond the limits of the cursed house, as if she took a piece of the curse with her or, perhaps, was infected by its evil. And in Chicago, Trish (Jennifer Beals; The Book of Eli, The Prophecy II, The Bride) moves in with her boyfriend and his kids. At about the same time, their neighbors move someone mysterious in as well.Like its 2004 predecessor, some scenes are more effective than others. Some of the same ploys are replayed to little effect—like the “look who’s under the covers” bed gag. Likewise, the CGI of the telephone booth scene, Kayako randomly appearing in the background, and the meowing ghost child have also lost their appeal. The shots limited to Kayako’s face emerging from shadows remain very creepy, but her full body shots lack menace… unless she’s shambling down a hallway in flickering lights. I quite liked that hallway scene pursuing Sarah Michelle Gellar—which may have influenced a similar scene in Lights Out (2016).The “dark room scene” callback to The Ring (2002) was entertaining and quite creepy even if not so scary. But in terms of scariness, Kayako is no Samara (The Ring). I remain most intrigued by the milk regurgitation (and re-drinking) scene. What was that!?!This sequel’s greatest victory is how the storytelling style (i.e., the use of several interwoven stories) deviates from the past-to-present yo-yoing narrative of the first. Sure, we’re basically just getting more of the same with new victims, but it feels different in a most welcome way. Not only that, but this sequel builds on the folklore of Kayako’s supernatural origins with Japanese occult practices, and even plays into the same theme as Freddy’s Revenge (1985) and The Ring 2 (2005). We also finally learn the origin of the croaking noise Kayako makes, and it actually makes perfect sense! I just found it annoying in part 1—but now I’ll always enjoy it more.I’m just gonna’ come out and say it. I think this sequel was better than The Grudge (2004). The tactics and storytelling felt more honed; like comparing Evil Dead 2 (1987) to Evil Dead (1981).

NO SPOILERS. AS I HAVE SEEN THIS FILM SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE, I CAN SAY WITH CONFIDENCE YOU MAY RESIST ALL NON FIVE STAR REVIEWS. THE WONDERFUL THING ABOUT THIS MOVIE IS YOU MAY BEGIN WITH IT AND GO BACK TO SEE THE GRUDGE 1
IF YOU NEED TO. THIS IS THE FAR SUPERIOR FILM AND STANDS ON ITS OWN. I SPEAK WITH NO HYPERBOLE, HAVING A VERY LARGE COLLECTION OF JAPANESE HORROR. THIS IS NOT A MOVIE FOR EVEN MATURE TEENS, GIVEN ITS BREATHTAKING
INTENSITY. OK, LET’S DO IT, A YOUNG WOMEN, LATE TEENS HAS DISAPPEARED FROM HER TOKYO SCHOOL AND HER MOTHER
SENDS HER OTHER DAUGHTER TO FIND HER. SOME RATHER MEAN GIRLS TAKE THE SISTER TO A SUPPOSEDLY HAUNTED HOUSE
AND LOCK HER IN. THE EVENTS THAT FOLLOW ARE BOTH HORRIFIC VISUALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY. I WILL NOT GIVE DETAILS AWAY, BUT I RANK THIS AMONG MY TOP TEN JAPANESE HORROR FILMS. YOU MAY ENJOY IT MORE SEEING IT WITH SOMEONE.
MAY I PLEASE SUGGEST, IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN ......RINGU.....THE JAPANESE VERSION OR .......THE RING........THE AMERICAN
FILM WITH NAOMI WATTS, THESE ARE TOP QUALITY HORROR FILMS ALSO.

I am going to keep this review short and to the point. People who say how bad this film is are either too stupid to understand a movie whose timeline is not presented to them in simple 'point a to point b' format, or they simply cannot appreciate fine, emotionally nuanced performances, or perhaps they are not really into J-horror (as the genre is called) films. There, I said it. Deal with it.

The film is a showcase for two fine performances:

Amber Tamblyn as Aubrey and Arielle Kebbel as Allison both deliver top-notch, A-list performances as girls forced into a situation in which they have no understanding of either what is going on or how to get themselves out (relatively) intact. The talent they apply in crafting these characters really lets the viewer feel their desperation and terror. It is impossible not to feel so sorry for what is happening to them.

Frankly, Arielle Kebbel steals the show from her more well-known compatriots in this movie. She brings her A-game in this performance. Without giving too much away, there is one scene in particular where one can really feel her horror on a truly visceral level. Her eyes perfectly convey what she is feeling, and her scream is truly classic horror film quality. As I stated before, I felt so terribly sorry for her character because she is, from all we are shown, a good person who in no way deserves the torment she receives, and it seems as though she gets an extra big helping of it indeed.

If you like fine performances and 'films' more than just 'movies', then you should really enjoy this one. In fairness, it may take more than one viewing to fully appreciate. I didn't truly appreciate it until the second time.

One of the few horror movies that actually creeps me out. Still can't watch it alone, and I'm a grown man. Fills one with an uneasy sense of dread.

The first film wasn't anything special and a little forgettable but was interesting because of some pretty good acting and storytelling. Sarah Michelle Gellar did a fantastic job as Karen in the previous film but it's extremely disappointing to see her role drastically reduced in this film. It's almost as if the producers only wanted her to return because they knew she was a huge draw in the first film, partly because of her dedicated "Buffy" fans.

It's no secret that the character of Karen doesn't last very long and she is her successor is her sister played by Amber Tamblyn. Tamblyn, who turned in a great performance on her two years of "Joan of Arcadia" does the best she can with her character (which has a total of two facial expressions throughout the whole movie: devastated and confused). I suspect it's the writers fault for not giving the character anything to do because she drifts throughout the whole movie not knowing what is going on.

The storyline itself is pretty intriguing. In the first film, the curse of Kayako was contained within the house but in this film it's moving to the outside world. What's intriguing about this storyline fails with all the cutting between different story lines. The secondary characters aren't very interesting and the death scenes are just horrible. They come and go and you can automatically tell from the beginning who will die or live.

The ending of the film is what makes the film better. It probably will leave a lot of people confused or angry by how abstract it is but I think it'll lead perfectly into a third "Grudge", if they make one.

My adult children found it entertaining for its dystopian, sociopathic approach to a world that, at predetermined intervals, has no protective social boundaries. Essentially, it's Big Brother's version of survival of the fittest; that is one way to deal with overcrowded prisons.

This movie has an interesting style of story telling. It has what I like to call trinity sight system. It tells three separate stories in an out of order sequence so that in the conclusion of the movie they all lead into each other finalizing the story.

I watched this movie by myself late at night and boy can I tell you the chilling effect this movie gives a person while they're alone is intense. It's a lot more intense than the previous movie because now the curse poses more of an overall threat. But you will have to watch the movie to find out how so.

One of the very few horror sequels that surpasses it's original. Scream 2 was the other. The ending especially was an unexpected surprise. Great thrills and chills all through the movie. If you like good creepy scary horror movies without all the blood, this is just the movie. MUST SEE! I would recommend seeing the original first, but if not, you can still get the jist of the back story to know what it is about,

5.0 out of 5 stars Überragender Horror. Weit besser als der 1. Teil!
