Bathynomus giganteus under oval globe

PU674-2

Bathynomus is a deep sea giant, walking on the floor of the ocean in the gulf of Mexico, looking for dead fishes (including wales and giant squids), between -500 to -2000 meters deep, where the temperature is a s low as 4 Celcius degrees. Its large eyes are compound of 4000 facets and allow the Bathynomus Giganteus to see in the dark. As food is scarce at that depth, they can survive up to 5 years without eating (Toba aquarium in Japan)! But when food is there, they gorge themselves to the point of compromising their locomotive ability! This specimen has been attracted by the baits in a trap used in the French West Indies by spiny lobster fishermen, as, due to the shortage of caught, they put their traps deeper and deeper.
