Biodiversity, Conservation and Sustainability in Asia

Abstract

Peganum harmala is an important medicinal plant, distributed in semiarid rangelands. We investigated the ethnopharmacological knowledge of this medicinal plant together with its botanical characterization and distribution, as well as critical assessment of the phytochemical features and biological activities. This species has been used in traditional medicine from decades. Phytochemical studies on the aerial parts and seeds of the plant have shown that they are rich in alkaloids, essential oils, fatty acids, flavonoids, and anthraquinones. Various parts of this plant including its seeds, bark, and root are highly reputed in the traditional medicine for the treatment of a variety of human ailments, for instance lumbago, asthma, colic, jaundice, and as a stimulant emmenagogue. The fruits are used as analgesic and antiseptic in folk medicine. Reports on the biological activities of the plant are mainly on its alkaloids which have been proven to possess many biological activities.
