Wild Tobacco - Nicotiana rustica

Most sources define native plants as those present in an area prior to European settlement. By that definition, Nicotiana rustica, or Wild Tobacco, meets the criteria for a native Michigan plant. However, it originally evolved in South America and was cultivated and widely transported by native peoples.  It naturalized and grew wild downstate. Because it maintained self-sustaining wild populations in southern Michigan prior to European settlement, we consider this plant native-ish. Michigan Flora defines it as adventive. You will have to be the judge of whether it is native enough or wild enough to meet the needs of your planting. 
 
Excellent nectar plant with interesting yellow tube flowers popular with bees and moths. Three to five feet in height, and prefers good soil and medium moisture. Beloved by grasshoppers, it makes a great wild bird plant for insectivores. Note that this is an annual and you will need to purchase more or collect the seed to keep it going in the UP for more than one season.  Deer resistant because of its strong taste and sticky, fuzzy leaves. Plant it as a barrier to shelter more edible plants from deer.  An interesting plant to diversify your garden, with a long and significant cultural history.
