    It's a sharp tooth catfish.
    Why does he have it?
How long has he had it?
How many liters is the tank?
And does he know that it can get to 1,5 Meters in length?
AND where did he catch it or buy it?

Why all the questions? Is it illegal to keep?

No idea why he bought it.
Not sure how long he has had it.
    Its currently in a 4ft 240L tank.

I don't really know if he knows how big it gets and i don't know where he bought it. We aren't really close friends, he just asked me to do this because he wants to sell it.

What do you think something like this is worth?

    Cat-eLog [IMG] Clariidae [IMG] Clarias

    [IMG] Cat-eLog Data Sheet
Scientific Name Clarias batrachus (Linnaeus, 1758)
    Common Names Common Walking Catfish
Clarias Catfish, Albino Walking Catfish, Piebald Walking Catfish, Vandremalle (Denmark)
    Type Locality Asia.
Synonym(s) Clarias assamensis, Clarias assamensis, Clarias punctatus, Silurus batrachus, Silurus batrachus
Pronunciation klar ee ass - bat rah chus
Etymology Clarias: From the Greek chlaros, meaning lively; in reference to the ability of the fish to live for long periods out of water.
    [IMG] Species Information
Size 400mm or 15.7" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Clarias species are characterized by having an elongated body; a soft rayed dorsal fin extending to, or nearly to, the caudal fin base; a soft rayed anal fin extending from just behind the anus to the caudal fin base; pectoral fins each with a serrated anterior bony spine; head depressed, covered largely by firmly sutured, surface sculptured bony plates forming a protective helmet; four pairs of flagellate barbels (nasals, maxillaries, inner and outer mandibulars); air breathing organs derived from the 2nd and 4th epibranchials within a superbranchial chamber.

Shown above are the mottled or marbled colour variety and also the more commonly available pinky-white form. From time to time you also see the ''original'' brown with white belly wild form.
Sexing Mature males have small spots along the dorsal fin; it is not known if this also applies to the albino colour variant.

IUCN Red List Status Least Concern
    pH 5.6 - 8.0
Temperature 20.0-26.0°C or 68-78.8°F (Show species within this range)
Other Parameters Unimportant, the fish will prosper in a wide range of PH and water hardness.
    [IMG] Husbandry Information
Feeding Anything; this fish is totally omnivorous and will gorge itself on most offerings.
Furniture Very well rooted plants and large structures that provide some shade. Appropriately sized clay pipes seem to provide a readily accepted, if less cosmetically pleasing, hideaway for these fish.
Compatibility Keep with large robust fish; anything small enough will be eaten. These should be fast growing or introduced as semi-adults. The walking catfish grows very fast indeed and although purchased at a ''safe'' size for it's co-inhabitants, this ratio will rapidly change to the danger of the smaller fishes.
Suggested Tankmates Large Cyprinids (Silver Sharks, Tinfoil or Spanner Barbs for example) or Central American Cichlids.
    Breeding See Shane's World article.

Haha no that's not a barbel. Young barbels are silver with reddish fins, the head is too small and so is the pupils, mouth and tail.

They are illegal in the US because of their practical indifference to water conditions and ability to cross into different waterways when it's rainy

It's a spotted/piebald clarias catfish. Same family but not exactly a barbel

It's Clarias batrachus - the Asian walking catfish, and pretty closely related to our local 'barbel'.

And it's on the NEMBA (2016) prohibited fish species list, for the reasons stated above, I'd imagine. Make sure your friend doesn't dump it in the local waterways, please. They're voracious predators.

I wonder if they would out compete our local catfish?

Size wise, not likely. I'm unsure if they have the same temperature tolerances (most sources say no), but the Asian one would certainly tolerate most of our moderately warm waters. Given that members of this genus are known to be capable of interbreeding with each other (as well as with other closely related genera, like the vundu, Heterobranchus) I'd be more worried about the effects on the local gene pools.

I think it would be the other way around, our baaber is a formidable beast. What @SalmonAfrica said about the breeding could be a problem, I didn't know that.

@WadeSmith he has a few options:

    1) Return it to the store he got it.
    2) Pass it on to another fishkeeper who wants it.
    3) Kill it.

Option 3 gives you the option of a small, high protein meal, too.
