ONE OF THE GREATEST FACTORY SUPERCARS EVER PRODUCED

While Ford Motor Company's Total Performance corporate racing program dominated much of the international motorsports scene, the Mustang had somehow lost ground on the drag strip relative to Chrysler's Hemi cars. In reply, Ford developed the 428 Cobra Jet engine at the suggestion of Rhode Island high-performance dealer Bob Tasca and Hot Rod magazine technical editor, Eric Dahlquist. Released on April 1, 1968, the reliable, high-torque 428 Cobra Jet was a potent combination of proven and readily available high-performance components already lurking in Ford's parts bin. Factory-rated at 335 horsepower, the CJ mill was later found to deliver closer to 400 ponies! Supporting CJ features included a Black-striped Ram Air hood, power brakes with front discs, Ford's 9-inch rear axle, reinforced front shock towers, and staggered rear shocks for 4-speed cars. While available on all Mustang body styles, the GT Equipment Group was required with the 428 Cobra Jet in 1968, including heavy-duty suspension, F70 tires in styled-steel wheels, fog lamps, chromed quad exhaust tips, and GT identification.

The Cobra Jet-powered  Mustang established a formidable reputation at their 1968 NHRA Winternationals racing debut, where Ford launched a six-car assault with star factory-backed teams and drivers. When the smoke cleared, four of the six CJ Mustangs reached the final rounds of their respective classes and the SS/E final round pitted two Cobra Jets against each other, with Al Joniec taking class and Super Stock Eliminator. The 428 Cobra Jet continued through 1970 and today, Mustangs with this fearsome yet reliable powerplant stand as true high-performance legends.
One of just 1,044 Mustang R-Code GT Fastbacks built for 1968 with the legendary Cobra Jet option, this stunning Fastback is listed in the 428 Cobra Jet Registry. Built at Ford's San Jose, California assembly plant, it was delivered to Covina, California's Russ Davis Ford, the Ford dealership which sponsored star driver Gas Ronda's CJ Mustang entry at the April 1968 NHRA Winternationals. A California-based car for most of its lifetime thereafter, this very special Cobra Jet-powered Mustang GT sports a concours-quality rotisserie restoration using NOS parts wherever possible for outstanding authenticity and correctness. Floors are finished in factory-correct Red Oxide with proper overspray patterns and factory-style chalk inspection marks are also present.

Excellent documentation includes a window sticker, ownership history, copies of prior titles, restoration receipts, and a Deluxe Marti Report documenting original production data, features and options. Other items include an owner's manual, period magazine articles about the 1968 Cobra Jet Mustangs, a 3'x2' show-display board, and even a Ertl 1:18 scale model.
