Documentary filmmaker and artist Timothy Greenfield-Sanders began his “list” documentary series over ten years ago, starting with The Black List: Volume 1, which asked prominent African-Americans to tell their stories. Since then, he’s released The Latino List, The Out List, and The Women’s List, among others. His latest project, The Trans List, to be released December 5 on HBO, is a collection of films and portraits of trans activists.

In interviews, Buck Angel, Laverne Cox, Caitlyn Jenner, and many others speak openly about their transitions and experiences. Greenfield-Sanders shot portraits of each subject against a slate-gray backdrop and paired each image with filmed interviews. Click ahead to preview photographs from the project coupled with comments from Greenfield-Sanders.

The Trans List documentary premieres on HBO on Monday, December 5, at 8 p.m. EST.

Laverne Cox

“It sounds like a cliche, but the camera does love certain faces: Yves Saint Laurent, Jodie Foster, Francesco Clemente. Laverne belongs in this elite group.  She brings to the camera her unique combination of beauty and intelligence.” —Timothy Greenfield-Sanders
