“Entourage” star Adrian Grenier is in the middle of a drama that he scripted himself.
The 39-year-old actor fomented outrage on social media for a controversial Instagram post on Friday’s anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, paying tribute to the Iraqi citizens who died during the U.S.-led war in that country.
“R.I.P. the 2,996 Americans who died in 9/11. R.I.P. the 1,455,590 innocent Iraqis who died during the U.S. invasion for something they didn’t do,” Grenier wrote on his Instagram page Friday.

That didn’t go over very well with social media users who view the anniversary as a hallowed day to honor victims who perished at the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, and onboard United Flight 93:
Wow, I can only imagine how the 9/11 victims families feel. Today was not the day. Today is their day,” posted a detractor. “Have some class.”
“The word for the day is boycott. Nice post about 9/11 a******! You don’t like it get the hell out of my country,” wrote one Twitter user.
“Terrific. Another has been crapweasel chooses 9/11 to crawl out from under a rock to post a tribute to his own boorishness,” tweeted another.
Some of his fans and supporters, however, answered back with messages of support:
“Apparently a good chunk o’Twitter doesn’t understand that honoring history with truth IS patriotic,” wrote a defender.
Grenier, who is best known playing the fictional Hollywood superstar Vincent Chase on “Entourage,” is an avid social activist and environmentalist off camera.
“Vince was my least favorite character anyway,” wrote another disgruntled Instagram follower.
There is also some confusion over Grenier’s numbers: the official toll lists 2,977 Americans as having perished on the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Nineteen terrorists, none of whom were American citizens, also died in the process. But its not clear if Grenier was including them in his 2,996 tally on purpose or referencing a total death toll from another source.
Grenier didn’t immediately respond to a Daily News attempt to reach him for comment.
