On Oct. 24, Newark’s Thirty One West will welcome a true American Idol.

Taylor Hicks, the much acclaimed winner of the ABC show’s fifth season, will perform songs from his American Idol songbook, and preview music from his upcoming album. The East Coast tour will benefit NS2 Serves, a nonprofit that trains veterans and employs veterans, and a cause close to Hicks’ heart.

Hicks has never been to Newark, but has toured around the area in the past. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, he grew up performing locally before quickly becoming a crowd favorite for his unique take on country music. The 2006 American Idol season finale was seen by over 200 million viewers, and following his win, Hicks went on to a career in Southern soul, country and blues.

Of his experience on the hit television series, Hicks shared “I think it was a really big blessing to be on that platform - my life changed when I won American Idol. I have been able to branch out in a lot of different directions because of that, I’m very thankful.”

His latest music, beginning with 2017 single ‘Six Strings and Diamond Rings.’ released after a brief hiatus, takes his roots in a new direction. From his most recent record, fans can expect “...a really great representation of where I’m at right now- very soulful and rootsy.” But although Hicks has exciting new music in the works, he relishes an opportunity to return to the songs that started his career. “All of that music is very nostalgic to me and I love playing it these days,” Hicks shared.

NS2 Serves, the non-profit his return to the stage will benefit, offers veterans training in the IT industry, and ultimately helping them to secure jobs in high-tech careers.

The unique impact of a military career is referenced in Taylor Hicks’ music, and the cause is close to his heart. “They really do make a difference in veterans’ lives, they’re a really effective organization,” he said.

Hicks has donated a pair of tickets and meet-and-greet packages for all six shows directly benefiting the organization, that fans can bid on for a package to meet the star backstage. But all concertgoers will get a chance to experience his music distinctly. The show itself will have an intimate feel - “I like to call it Idol up close,” Hicks explained.

In Newark, Hicks will be joined by singer and songwriter Brian Mackey. Tickets are $25-50 and can be purchased at https://thirtyone-west.com/event/taylor-hicks/.
