The number of traffic accidents in Moscow keeps going down; the city remains the leader in Russia in terms of road traffic safety. Sergei Sobyanin announced that on his Telegram channel

The number of traffic accidents that led to injury or death fell by 34 per cent in 2022 as compared to 2010. The number of traffic-related deaths has declined more than 2.5 times (763 to 300). As of the end of 2022, the social risk level is pegged tentatively at 2.37, in line with most developed countries’ level,” Moscow Mayor said.

The number of injuries also went down by 35 per cent (13,592 to 8,779). That’s three times less than in 2010 and lower than the level set out in the Presidential decree: no more than 4 traffic accident death per 100,000 by 2030.

The numbers have also improved throughout 2022 as compared to 2021. The number of traffic accidents went down 10 per cent (833 accidents fewer) along with traffic-related deaths (58 deaths or 16 per cent less). The number of injuries was also reduced by 9 per cent (871 people fewer were injured).

All that was made possible thanks to the comprehensive care applied to the city transport system and interactions with State Traffic Police.

“In order to improve road safety, we’re developing and introducing a new traffic accident prediction and prevention model. Changes to traffic structure and parking fees helped us get rid of chaotic parking that used to cause traffic accident hot spots around the city. We’re installing modern traffic cameras, developing the dedicated bus line network, working to reduce traffic density and speed, putting up traffic lights, etc. That’s a spanning and productive effort that’s not stopping,” wrote Mr. Sobyanin.

Moscow keeps working on reducing traffic accident rate and improving road safety. Over a thousand changes were introduced to the city traffic structure in 2022: new pedestrian crossings and street islands, changed road markings, new traffic lights: in the most accident-prone places first of all. Every fortnight, a task group consisting of Centre of the traffic organization staff together with representatives of other organizations analyze every traffic accident and design an action plan. As a result, the locations where anti-accident measures have been taken remain mostly accident-free.

1,300 smart traffic cameras were installed at Moscow Ring Road and key city thoroughfares in order to improve safety. They recognize 13 types of incidents, including long stops, fires, reverse driving, pedestrians on the road, etc. 387 new crossings and 141 street islands were set up for pedestrians; over 300 crossings were outfitted with contrast lighting. 386 traffic lights were also installed or updated. 784 traffic safety lessons were given to 17,000 school students. The number of children killed on the roads has gone down 40 per cent as compared to 2021.
